I have XP SP3, and have recently discovered that when Restarting the system, after logging on, Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird automatically run. There are no shortcuts for them in the Start Up Folder, and they do not start automatically after a complete shut down/fresh start -- only after a restart. After they're up and running, everything works normal.

That particular thing being when I choose All Programs and then try to access a program by right clicking on it nothing happens. How I found this was I was going to "Sort by name" and get the programs in alphabetical order but I can't. In every other aspect the right click option works fine.

No big deal, it's easy to do.But here's the kicker... once I'd created a My Documents folder in the larger partition, I decided to click on it and move it to the top of the list of folders, using the My Computer screen.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got a machine that I'm working on that has the following executes in the startup which I've never seen before and get no matches whatsoever on when I google them: bxbxxfky.exe mmizv.exe qfadh.exe xmmzeztc.exe I feel that I should probably just delete them, but considering my problems with a Dell that I'm working on (see Dell keeps looping, Ron the Geek) I'm a little gunshy. View 10 Replies View RelatedI made the change below however, if I click on a folder in the left hand "Folders" pane, it works as before and opens the folder and displayed in the contents in the right hand pane.
However, if I click on any folders in the right hand (files pane) a new windows explorer window opens a displays the "my documents".
The same thing happens if you click on a shortcut to a folder. Instead of the folder opening, it opens a new window and displays "my documents".
This problems started when I added a new function to the folder file folder file type properties to print out the contents of a folder by calling a batch file that piped the content to a file.
In the file association for file folders in the advanced section I now have three functions
- the afore mentioned 'create file list'
- explore (the default), and
- find
For the folder file type I just have:
- explore and
- open
Any suggestions on how to put things back to the way Windows Explorer always worked before make clicking folders in the right hand pane open them up properly in the same window as per clicking them on the left hand pane?
the startup is VERY VERY slow. After the Welcome Screen, it shows your desktop and then you gain control and do whatever you want right? Well that's the part my PC lags or slows down a lot. I think the part it lags is when it's loading the icons on my taskbar, like the icons on the bottom right hand screen. I don't have a lot of icons, and they're not resource usage intensive AT ALL. My PC lags during that loading part for about 3 mins or more, and i can't do anything or else it'll make it lag more, i.e i can't open programs or games, i can't even open folders and even if i try to, it takes forever to show up.
The lagging part only shows everytime during startup, but after that it's all good, i can play hardcore games like Crysis etc on maxed setting and do multi-tasks, but i just don't get why it lags so much on startup. In fact, on my crappy Toshiba laptop, it's loads way way WAAAAY faster than my PC, but my PC is way better so i don't understand why. And they both have the same programs and settings, in fact my laptop has way more stuff running on startup and my PC has nothing but games, it's a full on gaming PC only with nothing else, so it shouldn't even lag..............
Today I had uninstalled several unused programs with the Add-Remove utility of Windows XP.Then I also unchecked a few services in the 'msconfig' (System Configuration Utility) and rebooted.Now, when I right-click on any folder or folder short-cut, the menu shows up only after waiting a full 3 minutes. The mouse cursor turns into the 'busy' indication and the system freezes during that time. The same scenario happens when I try to delete any folder (or folder-shortcut) using the 'Del' key on the keyboard. There is no such issue for any of the files.I would like to know what exactly is causing this problem and how it can be resolved. My PC is working fine now otherwise, and seems much faster than it was yesterday.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm using Windows XP Pro and I open folders on my computer with shortcut like "Ctrl + Alt + "Letter key". To get this to work I created hidden shortcuts on my Desktop and under: Properties/"Shortcut" tab/"Shortcut key" Field. I added a shortcut key, by then pressing this particular "shortcut key" the folder attach to the shortcut folder will open. So far so good but once in a while out of the blue these shortcuts stop working all at once, restarting the computer ect doesn't fix the problem, the only way I found the shortcuts will start working again is by clearing the "shortcut key" field under Properties/"Shortcut" Tab then clicking ok, opening up properties again and adding once again the shortcut key on the "shortcut field" Why Do I have to keep reentering the shortcut keys on the shortcut folders for this to work? Any idea what can I do to prevent the shortcut command from stop working on the future?
View 14 Replies View RelatedLike when I go to start an application the wrong one starts, or shortcuts taking you to the wrong file??? This has happened to me a few times in the last couple of days? I got a XP tweak tool from TotalIdea, haven't really tweaked much with it, just a few visual, speed related tweaks. Nothing that cant be done without the 'TweakXP' program, but I was just trying it out??? It seems that this caused the weirdness with the shortcuts???? Another strange thing when I start the Tweaker it tries to start an installer for a antispyware app?? Tries twice, both times I tell it to cancel, then starts up normally. Probably just uninstall, but I thought Id run it through the TSG mill, and see if any others have similar experience? BTW I have run Regmech, Adaware SE, And my System Mech5 cleaners, but prob still there???

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'll start with a bit of background so everyone doesn't suggest the usual tips for speeding up the start menu.I'm logged in as administrator and running XP and have had problems with the start menu - all programs list being stupidly slow to populate for a while, and no performance issues anywhere else. I've tried all the usual removing shadows, fade and slide; unchecking auto search for network folders and printers; fiddling with the menu order in the registry and checking there are no false entries, etc, etc, but with no joy.I then noticed in C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorStart MenuProgramsAccessories there are two invalid links to 'Tour Windows XP' and 'Windows Explorer', and whenever I get anywhere near this folder everything slows up, which suggests to me these are the problem (although I could be wrong).
When I try to delete these shortcuts I get 'Cannot delete Tour Windows XP: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)'. The location both shortcuts are pointing to is C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorStart MenuProgramsAccessories - so are these just pointing to themselves?I then went on to check C:Documents and SettingsDefault UserStart MenuProgramsAccessories and found both these shortcuts exist there as well, and are valid working shortcuts. Easy I thought, I can just copy these over to replace the invalid shortcuts and everything's fixed - but it asks me if I want to replace the existing file, and then says 'Cannot move Tour Windows XP: A file with the same name already exists. Specify a different name.'So I appear to be stuck with two invalid shortcuts in my menu that drive the processor mad anytime I go near them, and I can't delete, rename or point them at something else.
The problem is this. On a network. Upgraded from NT to XPsp2. Used old profile desktop admin.When XP startmenu (simple) is used, clicking on the All Programs does not pop up all the rest of the programs (they are there, in the right place). shortcuts in /documents and settings/%userprofile%/Start Menu/programs/
When classic menu is used, no shortcuts appear above the line (shortcuts in Start Menu root -- /documents and settings/%userprofile%/Start Menu)
The shortcut icons for frequently used programs that appear in the start menu below the Internet, Email, etc. shortcuts seem to have disappeared. I noticed it when I rebooted after having defragmented system files using PerfectDisk 8. I assumed the list just got cleared, but it seems no matter how many programs I open, no new shortcuts are ever created. The space just remains blank.I'm not sure if this has any bearing, but I'm also running WindowBlinds 6. I've had WindowBlinds for a long long time and have never run across this issue. Also disabling WB doesn't seem to fix anything.I'm sure the solution is something quite simple

my windows is acting like it has no registry i can't access system restore, reg edit, etc. or and has icons only on the shortcuts which are defult like computer network bin etc. The files eg word doc or a pdf can been seen with the appropriate program. I can work programs like normal as i am using firefox, IE ain't working but i can acces computer which is IE . This has happened once before but i can't understand why i had karpersky and adware updated both times but didn't stop it. b4 it happened alot quicker but this time it took its time.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have encountered an odd problem in Win XP Pro SP2. When I open 'Control Panel'- 'Add or Remove Programmes', there is a massive gap in the programme list. I have attached a pdf showing the screen at the start & end of this gap, if you look at the scroll bar it will give you some idea of the size of it. It takes about 30 'page down' keystrokes to get from the start to end of the gap. All of my programmes appear to be listed ok & this is not actually causing me any difficulties but I am curious to find out what is causing it
