I noticed some irregular occurences on my system, starting off with “My Computer” opening the same folder at startup (C:program files ero I think) and taking a LOT longer to shutdown/restart than normal (anywhere between 5 & 15mins to shutdown). While in multiplayer mode in Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I would get excessive page file activity which would get progressively worse. Map load times would constantly increase as each new map was loaded until the system reported WOLF.exe had caused and error and would shutdown the game. The solution for my system is to set both the Desktop AND game color to 16-bit. Also, set both to the same resolution. I like 1280 x 1024, but that may be too high for some systems.After this tweak, my map load times went from >1 min to between 10 and 20 seconds. Right where a P4 1.5 with 256 megs should be.

The machine does not show any boot messages (ie running start up scripts , applying computer settings etc) at either start up or shutdown.Have tried:removing readding to the domain gp update clearing the start up processes Machine has Symantec endpoint installed and runs a weekly scan but nothing has come up.

If you load a program in the start menu? startup folder? upon re-boot it will not start the selected program. My question is how do I delete the? startup?folder in my start menu? When I try it will not allow me to do so. This whole thing isn?t causing any problem. It?s just starting to grate on me.

There are no shortcuts for them in the Start Up Folder, and they do not start automatically after a complete shut down/fresh start -- only after a restart. After they're up and running, everything works normal.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI don't know what happened, all the sudden while my daughter was in the middle of being on the internet website called evergirl.com (kids games & talk like barbie.com) the computer hung up and got real sluggish. After she was able to close completely out of it I restarted the computer. It came on slowly and gave an error message, as I went to write it down, it blanked off (it said something about unable to open *some* local files and something about a *damaged* registry key. Then it opened to a desktop from like when we first got the computer, most my files are their but the shortcuts are gone off the desktop and mozilla asked if I wanted to import all my data from OE.

View 3 Replies View RelatedEver since I installed Webroots SpySweeper, my computer has been running much slower than usual - even after I uninstalled the program and all its remanents from my registry. The worst part however, is media. Ever since then, any audio and video does not play properly on the computer - it just lags and plays very choppily.My computer has tested free of any spyware/adware/malware, as well as any viruses. Almost nothing is set to start up with my computer, and the registry is cleaned. As well, Opera is the only web browser I ever use, and I do not have my windows set to automatic update.
View 2 Replies View Relatedrecently my computer takes ages to get passed the Windows XP load screen. Sometimes the scrolling bars stop and it freezes before i it loads the desktop. It works if i safe boot it, but often it doesn't pass the Windows XP startup screen, or it takes a long time (approx 100s) to get passed it. Before it only took at most 10 seconds. It don't know why it's doing it. I've tried running a registry mechanic, prefetch cleaner and all that jazz.But it's still taking awhile to get passed that XP screen.

View 6 Replies View Relatedwell, this problem started a little while ago, Ive got a 2.93ghz P4, and 1GB memory, so i know my computer is (plenty) fast enough.when i click on the button in the start menu "Turn Off Computer", my PC shows the hourglass, and i cant click on anything, this will go on for about a minute or 2, once it took 5 minutes. then the small box with shutdown options comes up finally, and then after the light blue screen gets to "Shutting Down...". it takes maybe a bit longer than expected but im not to sure about that.
View 18 Replies View Relatedi ran some pretty complicated malware-removal programs since my PC (on the office network) was showing loads of trojans and other malware. in the order of running, i ran Malwarebytes, MGTools, Combofix with the windows recovery option. Then, on not having found anything substantial, I uninstalled Combofix with the /u optiom and deleted C:Combofix and later, proceeded to delete C:MGTools.The PC allows me to do a Ctrl+Alt+Del log in, and once I hit Return after entering the password, it just shows me the blue background to the desktop - No items, no menus.Same thing happens in safe mode.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is weird. I have to go through the shutdown procedure twice, i.e., Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok, then Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok again. It will then shutdown properly. The same thing happens when I try to "Restart." After doing the first shutdown sequence, everything is normal. I can open programs, surf the web, etc. It's as if I never tried to shut it down at all. Only after the second shutdown procedure will it shutdown fully. One note: When I go through the first shutdown sequence, my taskbar pops up and the desktop is darkened. After clicking Ok, the taskbar autohides and my desktop returns to its normal color.I have only had this problem for the last month or two. Before that, all was fine. It's not critical since I can shut it down. It's just annoying to have to do it twice.I have Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, build 5.00.2195.

When I select "Start" then either shutdown or reboot, my desktop will flicker a couple of times, and then nothing appears to happen. I must select "start" again and then either shutdown or reboot and then they will work as expected.

SB Live sound card and updated driver work fine in all sounds EXCEPT on Windows start up and shutdown, there are no music.Check the .wav files and when I click on them directly or in the Control Panel/Sounds, they play just fine. View 9 Replies View RelatedI use xp pro and have Microsoft PLUS installed wich gives me a few extra themes to choose from. Everything works great except when i log in or out of windows i dont get any sounds, no matter what theme i use. It used to work fine and i am not sure exactly when it stopped.
I checked my sounds configuration and i can play the start up and shutdown sounds by testing them but they wont work when actually starting or shutting down windows. Even if i just use the regular XP theme i still dont get any sound.
Recently developed a problem with very slow shutdown and startup both. With no programs running, it takes about a minute and a half to shut down, about two to boot up, and about five to load programs after I select user. During the program load, the hard drive is running like crazy, with Task Manager showing a lot of use by explorer.exe, ctfmon, and one svchost entry. At times, one of the two latter ones will jump as high as 98% usage. I tried disabling every startup program with Task Manager while disconnected from the net, deleted restore points, defragged, and the delay improved only slightly. In addition to AVG a/v, Spybot, and Adaware I have run CCleaner and the full version of Registry Mechanic with no improvement. I have gone down the HijackThis list using the cheat sheet in this forum and deleted a couple of suspicious items, that didn't help either. On the attached startup list, I have no clue what the fourth item with no command listed might be. I have recently added an external hard drive for storage and backup and a new monitor, fwiw, but the problem seems to have started at some point after that. The web sites in the HJT log are all legitimate.
