My hard drive was formatted due to a virus and now when the computer is turned I get an empty file folder every time. I would like to know how to remove this and have it just go directly to my desktop.
I accidentally made a duplicate? startup folder? on my desktop from my start menu to the desktop. The copy on my desktop works the other (in the drop menu) does not. If you load a program in the start menu? startup folder? upon re-boot it will not start the selected program. My question is how do I delete the? startup?folder in my start menu? When I try it will not allow me to do so. This whole thing isn?t causing any problem. It?s just starting to grate on me.
I didn't find an existing thread to the topic, so i apologize if the question has already been answered. at one point in time i had a mahjongg game installed on my windows xp run pc. i placed a shortcut on the start menu (above the frequent programs list). somehow or other, the shortcut was not removed when i uninstalled the program. my attempts to get rid of it since then are as follows:
1. when i right click on the icon, and select "remove from this list", nothing happens. 2. i attempt to run the shortcut and it says "the item you selected is not available. it might have been moved, renamed, or removed. do you want to remove it from the list?" i select yes, and nothing happens. 3. i attempt to rename the shortcut and it says "cannot rename file: cannot read from the source file or disk." 4. i open the properties and there is a message in the target type field saying "this is not a valid shortcut". i cannot change any of the fields without getting the error message in #3. 5. reinstalling the game doesn't change anything. i get the same error messages as above. 6. i searched through the registry for anything named "mahjongg", and it doesn't turn anything up.
If it is possible, and how to do it, to delete the My Recent Documents which shows up in the Start menu in XP. If that cannot be done easily, is it possible to delete the entries that appear there.
I would like to add several folders under the Run command on the right of the START menu. I used this tweak (below) of Kelly's to add one folder there. But If I run this tweak again it replaces the first folder with the new one.I thought I might be able to make the changes by hand so I tried to understand the code of the tweak.
I want to add a FOLDER as a shortcut in the MAIN part of the start menu. I would prefer it be where "My Computer", "My Documents", etc is, but I would settle for where "Internet" and "E-Mail" currently are. I can successfully add apps to that area, but not folders. I basically just want to click the start menu, click on the folder, and have it open up.
I am running Win XP on a HP laptop. When I boot up a program always tries to load but it is one that I don't have or have tried to load. It always asks for the disk which I do not have. It is not located in the start folder, so I do not know where to go to delete it.
I've Windows XP Pro SP2. for some reason I cant find Run in Start menu, also when I open any folder i cant see "Folder options" in view list Scanning with Norton Anti-Virus corporate Edition 10 doesnt show any virus activities
I read the advice to start in safe mode to delete files that gave the errror message cannot delet file - source file not found. They wouldn't delete in Safe Mode either. I am trying to delete mp3 from my c drive because I have an external disk where I have my music library. I can delete them one at a time without getting the error message but not a bunch of them. Some of them I have been able to delete in a bunch.
Items place in my user folder are not appearing in the Start/All Programs menu. For example, if I place them here:C:Documents and SettingsusrnamStart MenuAccessories they do not appear in Start/All Programs. But, if I place them here:C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuProgramsAccessoriesThey do show up in the program menu.
I got a file in a folder that I can't delete. When I try to do that always got the message that the file is in use. I already restarted the pc but it keeps saying the same thing. The file is not a system file, it's a normal user file.
When I open up the Start Menu on one of the accounts, there is nothing in the left-hand column. When I right click and get the Properties, and try to Customize the Menu, the options don't save, and I'm stuck with nothing. I've tried clicking on the Internet radio button for "Show on Start Menu". I click Ok, then Apply, and Finally Ok again. But when I go back to the menu, it still has nothing in the left-hand column.
The second thing I've noticed was under Folder Options -> View, I tried to check both the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" button, and also un-check "Hide extensions for Known File Types" and click on Apply, then Ok again. But still, these options don't save and are reset back to "Do not show hidden files", and "hide extensions".
Going through work computer trying to delete large amounts of old files. Some of them are just photos (part of work practice). I can not access them, to open them for viewing, nor delete them. Not part of old programs, just photos or .docs. Problem One: Opening a specific folder A. First: causes major delay when I try to access the folder A Second: Error Msg reads: The disk in drive C is not formatted. Do you want to format it now? No, I really just want to delete it. Third: Try deleting folder that the folder B that folder [B]A/B] is in, Error Msg: Cannot delete folder, the directory is not empty.
"Cannot delete (folder name): It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that may be using the file and try again." So, I did that and it still will not delete. Besides rebooting (uses up much of my time) anybody know how to clear this?
I have a used laptop and have removed all of the previous owner's data. I have created a new user. I have changed the owner's name in My Computer and in the registry. Everything works well and I can find all my new files in My Documents as I expect. However in C:Docs and Settings there is a folder with the old owner's name. XP will not let me rename it or delete it and says it is "a Windows system folder and is requred for Windows to run properly". Apparently some part of XP is still using some files/folders in the old owner's name folder. How can I get around this so I can clean up my disk and delete the old owner's folder?
I have a folder in My Documents that has set up permanent residence there. No matter what I do I cannot get rid of it. The message that I get is, "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk."
The files within the Start Menu folder, as an example, have the path: C:Documents and SettingsUserStart Menu. If I rename the Start Menu folder to, say, xxxxStart Menu, and view path of the files in the folder again, the path remains the same C:Documents and SettingsUserStart Menu instead of what I expected to be C:Documents and SettingsUserxxxxStart Menu. The same applies for Favorites.
Additionally, I can leave the renamed xxxxStart Menu folder in Documents and SettingsUser and create a new folder of the same name (xxxxStart Menu) and it allows me to do this--even though both names are the same!
1) Is this normal? 2) Why is this? 3) Are these some kind of "special" folders that Windows XP treats differently? 4) Why doesn't this happen for other folders like Desktop, Cookies, Local Settings, SendTo, and Application Data?
I saw a forum like this before, but considering the fact that I'm really dumb with computers, I'm hoping someone can run me through what I'm supposed to do to fix the problem.I'm having the same problem as I found here on this thread, The computer's just been reformatted with Windows XP Home Edition earlier this week and starting yesterday, I could not access the "Turn off Computer" in the Start Menu. I also do not have access to the "Run" option nor can I "Control+Atl+Del"
To restore the Turn off Computer button in the start menu. I had a single user account and did not need to log in to the computer. One fine morning I find that the Turn off Computer icon has vanished from the start menu! Moreover, I cant press ctrl+alt+del to start the task manager, it says "Task Manager has been disabled by your Administrater". My account was an administrator account with full privileges, but it got changed to a debugger account. I created another user account with administrator rights, logged into that account and changed the properties of my original account to full administrative account, but when I logged back on to my old account, I still find that the situation is still the same. The only way I can switch off my computer is by logging off, and then selecting the Turn Off option in the logoff screen, which is tedious and of course irritating.
hi guys,i'm hoping some kind person could help me with a problem i had last night.I've become very interested in photography so i downloaded Infranview, along with its plug-ins.I don't know what happened or if it was something i did in the install but when it had finished,i found that all the left side of my start menu was blacked out, also, when i hovered on my 'all programmes',nothing showed up In a panic,i uninstalled the Infranview but it still left my problems which in the end, with a lot of seaching,i found system restore and went back to the day before which put right my pc.
I did a control alt del and closed a lot of running processes, including explorer. since then i cant get the start menu back. i cant figure out how to shut down so i just pressed the power button, but even after restarting that way i cant get the start menu back.
I installed Windows XP on my computer, but when I got to restart / cut it on its just a blank sceeen. I can't see nothing like (start menu, my computer,etc..) What have I done and how do I correct it ?
I've just taken my brand new desktop system out of the box and there's no Start menu or icons appearing on the desktop. The monitor automatically initiated a startup wizard to select the correct resolution but once that was complete, the desktop was blank (except for the Windows default rolling green hills wallpaper). Not even the mouse pointer is visible. I restarted but after startup it went to the blank picture again. I tried pressing the Windows key on the keyboard, and also tried Ctrl+Alt+delete to get the Task manager but both times nothing happened. All components are plugged in correctly, and I haven't installed any software other than what came installed from the manufacturer (please see specs in my profile); I literally plugged it all in and switched it on.
I have a Dell Dimension 2400 I have Windows XP my computer is less than a year old and the other day it just started and the start menu and desktop icons wont come up any longer.I dont wanna reformat it because i have a ton of music and other files on here that i'd like to keep like pictures and whatnot is there anyway to get my computer to come back?
i wanted to give my comp a thorough clean up so i did an online anti virus scan (Panda Anti virus). In the middle of the scan, the desktop and the start menu disappeared. My hunch was that explorer.exe terminated. I tried restarting explorer.exe through the task manager but it said "explorer.exe is not a valid win32 program". When i restarted the computer, windows opened but i cud only see my wallpaper, no desktop or start menu. All programs are working, the only thing is that i have to start whatever i want to use using the task manager.
Im using windows xp and my computer automatically restarts at the user select screen(im booting from my windows xp cd right now). and my computer freezes when i play games and when i use my start menu. i use Norton anti virus and it doesn't find anything.
"Help and Support" no longer work on my computer when activated from the START menu. I have no idea when it stopped working. When it's activated, HELPCTR.EXE runs for a few seconds and then exits. No help window. No entries in any of the event logs. Nothing to give me a clue. I have an HP m1180n (Pent 4) running the latest version of Windows Media Center.
After I click "Turn off computer" in the start menu, I get an hourglass and it takes over a minute for the Turn off/restart/log off box to come up. Anyone know why this is happening? I can still work with the computer and do other stuff, but it just takes a while for the box to come up. It's really annoying.
