Im using windows xp and my computer automatically restarts at the user select screen(im booting from my windows xp cd right now). and my computer freezes when i play games and when i use my start menu. i use Norton anti virus and it doesn't find anything.

When I try to switch users the computer automatically restarts.
There are 4 users on the computer and it is not part of a LAN, or any other network.
2005 MCE WIN XP, if i go to START, ALL PROGRAMS, and scan thru my programs, the amount of time to scroll thru programs is about 3-4 seconds, before it closes out, also RENAMING a folder, on desktop, same thing happens, for instance, renaming a folder PICTURES, i get to PIC, then it kicks me out. I have OPtical wireless mouse, replaced batteries with fully charged ones, no difference, also mouse 12 inches from reciever.
View 2 Replies View Relatedplease people, bear with me. im sure you have seen a ton of these, but this one isn't like any one i have heard of. i cant figure it out and its driving me up a wall.An interesting thing is that when i run Team Fortress 2 in the background, it doesnt seem to freeze at all. i have 2 GB of RAM, TF2 takes up approx 450mb of RAM. i dont know why my computer would run so well with that much ram being taken up. I tried doing a harddisk error read through windows, but it froze 40% through the scan of the free space (part 5 of 5).i couldn't seem to get a RAM scan to run properly. i tried using the WINDIAG device put out by windows, but none of the commands worked. any other possible ways to scan my memory for errors? I am in a dorm at Ohio State, and i had these same problems last year living in a dorm. they eventually went away, and now that i am back here i am having issues again. except now, i have to restart my comp at least 20 times a day just to get things done. running itunes seems to make it freeze within 5 minutes.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen i was checking the computer out at sellers house, it did not crash and worked fine, I took it home for a good price (i thought) at $300. There was an instance of Windows XP installed, and seller asked me to format it before I started using the computer, I agreed and headed home. To test it out I installed Prince of Persia and ran that, everything went smoothly and I was satisfied. I then went out and bought a nice $200 widescreen monitor (the 15" crt wasnt cutting it) and the wireless card as it only had ethernet. Hooked up the new monitor and wireless connected to the internet and started installing WoW. At disk 5 it frooze up and its all gone downhill from there
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe main problem: I try to open "My Computer" "Control Panel" "Search" that type of stuff from the start menu and it seems like my OS just completely freezes up, the start menu window just freezes and locks onto the background, desktop becomes inactive where I can not click any icons or anything, usualy this happens for a period of time then it just self terminates, screen goes blank to background desktop image for a couple secs then comes back (as if I had not tried to open whatever I had tried to)

The only new process I did last night was back up my whole C Drive onto an external hard drive. When I got home this afternoon, the computer starts as normal then I get the error message asking me to choose to "Start Windows Normally" or "Last Known Good Configuration". No matter which one I choose, the Windows XP Home Edition screen comes up and begins to load, then my computer just restarts itself and I go through the same process. What's happening?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Great Quality ZX-3310 laptop. It recently froze up and would not reboot. I unplugged the machine and plugged it back in to restart and now I get either the windows start up page that freezez before it is loaded or I get this message: "RS482M- Test Bios BR#13207A". Sometimes I get nothing on the screen but I can hear the fan run. It will not let me start in Safe Mode. The DVD drive recognizes a DVD it there but it immediately freezes on start up.

It seems to start up fine, and it gets to both screens where it says, "Windows 2000 is starting up," and on the second one, it seems to get done then it goes to a blue screen for a very split second, and restarts automatically, and does this, Over and over. It doesn't make it to the desktop. He hooks up a different hard drive to it and it works fine.. It is also windows 2000. Its windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

View 8 Replies View RelatedTo restore the Turn off Computer button in the start menu. I had a single user account and did not need to log in to the computer. One fine morning I find that the Turn off Computer icon has vanished from the start menu! Moreover, I cant press ctrl+alt+del to start the task manager, it says "Task Manager has been disabled by your Administrater". My account was an administrator account with full privileges, but it got changed to a debugger account. I created another user account with administrator rights, logged into that account and changed the properties of my original account to full administrative account, but when I logged back on to my old account, I still find that the situation is still the same. The only way I can switch off my computer is by logging off, and then selecting the Turn Off option in the logoff screen, which is tedious and of course irritating.

When I start the computer, after the windows XP logo I get a blue screen with border top and bottom and a small windows logo and the mouse cursor then I can do nothing but move the mouse cursor around that screen.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSometimes I can have the comp on for a couple of days, be playing WoW and HL2 games on it and all sorts of things and it'll suddenly freeze without warning. No hdd light, no error message, just complete freezure (not a real word, I know). Mouse won't move, keyboard is locked out. Sometimes when i restart the comp, it just hangs without even getting to the post screen. Other times i'll restart and everything will boot fine, but a minute or so after windows boots it'll freeze again. The freezing/restarting happen while playing games, right after closing the games, and/or when i'm surfing the web, or even when the comp is idle.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just taken my brand new desktop system out of the box and there's no Start menu or icons appearing on the desktop. The monitor automatically initiated a startup wizard to select the correct resolution but once that was complete, the desktop was blank (except for the Windows default rolling green hills wallpaper). Not even the mouse pointer is visible. I restarted but after startup it went to the blank picture again. I tried pressing the Windows key on the keyboard,and also tried Ctrl+Alt+delete to get the Task manager but both times nothing happened. All components are plugged in correctly, and I haven't installed any software other than what came installed from the manufacturer (please see specs in my profile); I literally plugged it all in and switched it on.

View 12 Replies View Relatedi wanted to give my comp a thorough clean up so i did an online anti virus scan (Panda Anti virus). In the middle of the scan, the desktop and the start menu disappeared. My hunch was that explorer.exe terminated. I tried restarting explorer.exe through the task manager but it said "explorer.exe is not a valid win32 program". When i restarted the computer, windows opened but i cud only see my wallpaper, no desktop or start menu. All programs are working, the only thing is that i have to start whatever i want to use using the task manager.

I have a network at my home with XP Pro. My printer is attached to the router with a print server.this network has worked great till this week. Starting this week, (maybe-- maybe after I downloaded the new security updates) my printer does not print when I command it to. It just freezes, until I restart the computer. When I get the cntl-alt-delete prompt, then the printer kicks in and prints what I commanded. I don't even need to log on.

His start menu shows all the icons for programs but under some things like My Computer, and some others, there is no text or title text. On Facebook, you can see a person's picture on the feed, but no name. In Firefox, with new tabs, it doesn't show what the tab titles are. Control panel too also shows all icons and no title.
