Having problems with my Windows XP Pro (SP2) as when I go to "Turn off computer" (on the Start menu) and select "Switch Off" or "Restart" I lose the normal screens and it saves my settings but then gets to "Closing Windows" and then it sticks. Ctrl-Alt-Delete does nothing.

View 8 Replies View RelatedTo restore the Turn off Computer button in the start menu. I had a single user account and did not need to log in to the computer. One fine morning I find that the Turn off Computer icon has vanished from the start menu! Moreover, I cant press ctrl+alt+del to start the task manager, it says "Task Manager has been disabled by your Administrater". My account was an administrator account with full privileges, but it got changed to a debugger account. I created another user account with administrator rights, logged into that account and changed the properties of my original account to full administrative account, but when I logged back on to my old account, I still find that the situation is still the same. The only way I can switch off my computer is by logging off, and then selecting the Turn Off option in the logoff screen, which is tedious and of course irritating.

Anyone know why this is happening? I can still work with the computer and do other stuff, but it just takes a while for the box to come up. It's really annoying.
View 1 Replies View RelatedTurn on my computer, it takes me to a screen which gives me a number of options like safe mode and start windows normally and a time limit of about 27-30 seconds. Whenever I choose something, whether it be safe mode or to start windows normally, my computer decides to just restart and the whole process repeats over and over again. Does anyone know what the problem is? I've tried connecting and reconnecting the computer, checking for loose wires and even keeping the computer off for a couple of days, nothing seems to work.
View 24 Replies View Relatedwell, this problem started a little while ago, Ive got a 2.93ghz P4, and 1GB memory, so i know my computer is (plenty) fast enough.when i click on the button in the start menu "Turn Off Computer", my PC shows the hourglass, and i cant click on anything, this will go on for about a minute or 2, once it took 5 minutes. then the small box with shutdown options comes up finally, and then after the light blue screen gets to "Shutting Down...". it takes maybe a bit longer than expected but im not to sure about that.

E-mail returned for one day, then everything went South. Can't get on-line, start menu doesn't open, can't open Macafee, can't turn off system restore. Programs seem to run OK. Downloaded various virus removers on another computer. Stinger indicated clear as did Microsoft Malicious Sotware Removal Package (August version). Macafee's bremove and kremove both stalled out. Now what can I do?

That may well be my fault; I am relatively inexperienced so may be using the wrong search terms. My apologies if that is the case.I have a Sony Vaio laptop running XP with a built in wireless which can be switched on or off with a sliding button at the front. The laptop has not been used for a couple of weeks, and now I find that it will not start up properly as long as the wireless is switched on. If it is on, the laptop constantly restarts then crashes and restarts again, never getting started up properly. If I switch off the wireless, it will start perfectly normally. If I then switch the wireless on after a normal startup, it may take a few seconds or a few minutes, but it will then crash and go back to the restart-crash cycle. There is an error screen which comes up but it is too briefly displayed to read it or get a screenshot.
I did a little research and tried a system restore which did not work. I also tried restarting without my wireless keyboard and mouse hooked up. When I did that and switched on the wireless, it stayed up long enough for me to connect to my network (the only time it was up long enough) then reverted to the restart/crash cycle again.
how do i add 'select all' option to the rightClick menu when i right click in a folder. i know you can do 'Ctrl+A'. i want to do this using the mouse. i'd prefer if someone told me how to do this using operations performed within the system without having to install an application. i'm comfortable with the registry and am open to editing the registry

After resuming from hibernation, I noticed that whenever i want to shut the PC thru clicking the "Start" button and then "Turn off computer", nothing happens at all - just the screen refreshes and nothing more than that. It's supposed that i should get that famous dialog which would allow 2 me 2 shut, restart or log off or... but nothing really come up at all. This happens only when i resume from hibernation but it's working OK if i bring the PC to work thru cold booting. But when hibernating and then resuming, it's not working again ANY explanation to this strange behavior.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP SP2 on a Toshiba laptop. Recently, I cannot select the standby icon from my shutdown menu (i.e. it appears, but is not highlighted). While this does not seem like such a serious issue, I am concerned it may be a sign of a larger problem. I have not had a crash however, so I do not know why the sudden change. I would prefer not to do a system restore, if there is another option. I also could not see any simple solution in the power management settings.

When I turn my computer on this morning, it started to boot, but after few seconds, the long message appears, something like: "We are sorry for inconvenience but Windows can not start... " and it tells me to either boot into Safe mode, use last configuration, or start Windows normally. The last option is highlighted. But after that, blue screen flashes for just a moment (long enough to see there is some text but not long enough to read it), and then it goes back to start... detecting hard drive and stuff. It keeps looping like that forever. I tried to go to safe mode, but the same things happen. It goes back to start and then a "Start Windows normally" is Highlighted again.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was reinstalling windows xp home and it stayed in the same position for like an hour, so I had no choice but to either restart or turnoff. I did this and now I can even boot past the logo screen. I have tried inserting XP home disk but it does not have any previous version installed and only has the option to format the drive. GRR I tried safe mode, vga, last known config but all dont work . It seems that Windows/system32/config/system.log is the file (also get blue screen of death after trying recovery console, but hard drive is still in tact. Fortunately I have backed up most of my system. I would still like to get it back though. I havent got any servie packs so I cant turn of 'disable automatic restart..'

To turn off my pc,i usually click on start in the taskbar,then the options to stand-by,turn off or restart appear,I then click on turn off,and the pc does the rest,it turns the pc off and the monitor. Now when i go through the process of turning it off, i do everything as described above,but instead of shutting off,it just acts as if i did nothing,i am left staring at the desktop and can just continue to use it as normal.So i have come to the conclusion that some sort of virus or something (i am doing a virus sweep as i am writting) has turned off the auto shutdown function,What i'd really love to know is can anyone tell me how i can turn this feature back on,i also forgot to add,that u cannot log off either,the same thing happens.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just taken my brand new desktop system out of the box and there's no Start menu or icons appearing on the desktop. The monitor automatically initiated a startup wizard to select the correct resolution but once that was complete, the desktop was blank (except for the Windows default rolling green hills wallpaper). Not even the mouse pointer is visible. I restarted but after startup it went to the blank picture again. I tried pressing the Windows key on the keyboard,and also tried Ctrl+Alt+delete to get the Task manager but both times nothing happened. All components are plugged in correctly, and I haven't installed any software other than what came installed from the manufacturer (please see specs in my profile); I literally plugged it all in and switched it on.
