Wireless Switch Causes Laptop Constantly To Restart
Apr 15, 2008
I have tried a search here, but not found a thread with the same problem as mine. That may well be my fault; I am relatively inexperienced so may be using the wrong search terms. My apologies if that is the case.I have a Sony Vaio laptop running XP with a built in wireless which can be switched on or off with a sliding button at the front. The laptop has not been used for a couple of weeks, and now I find that it will not start up properly as long as the wireless is switched on. If it is on, the laptop constantly restarts then crashes and restarts again, never getting started up properly. If I switch off the wireless, it will start perfectly normally. If I then switch the wireless on after a normal startup, it may take a few seconds or a few minutes, but it will then crash and go back to the restart-crash cycle. There is an error screen which comes up but it is too briefly displayed to read it or get a screenshot.
I did a little research and tried a system restore which did not work. I also tried restarting without my wireless keyboard and mouse hooked up. When I did that and switched on the wireless, it stayed up long enough for me to connect to my network (the only time it was up long enough) then reverted to the restart/crash cycle again.

use Windows XP to manage my wireless LAN connections (View available wireless connections > Change advanced settings > Wireless networks > Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings (checked)).My wireless antenna is always on and I notice that I can get an extra 25 minutes out of my laptop battery if I disable the wireless antenna. Is there an easy way to switch the antenna on/off, ie. without having to
disable it each time?

This has been a problem for me for about 2 years now.I've seen many other people complain with the same problem, but have never seen a viable solution (it's always what brands, switch channels, winsockfix, firmware, etc.)Wireless connect (Belkin Wireless Pre-N card)Win XP SP2 (updated as far as it can go) The problem: Connection becomes unstable(i.e. slow) for about 2-5 seconds, then utterly fails to connect...can't access web, can't access local address(i.e. 192.168.1.1), can't ping anything. When using DHCP on router, doing a repair (i.e. release/renew clear ARP cache, etc.) fixes. If using static IP, then I must assign a new IP. That is, I have to go from say 192.168.1.110 to 192.168.1.111
The problem is not unique to a single ISP & router. I have two networks I can access. For troubleshooting sake, I made them both unencrypted (although WEP, WPA makes no difference to the problem). I have also tried multiple channels in the theory of interference, and channel strength for both networks are good(using NetStumbler). Both networks are on far channels from each other (i.e. 1 & 11), and there are no other networks detected in the area by WinXP or NetStumbler.Net #1) Ameritech DSL Modem ->DLink Router ->Belkin Pre-N Wireless(access point). Router logs in PPoE (the DSL modem's "router functions are turned off"), Belkin access point has NAT turned off. (don't have the exact model numbers in front of me, but it's irrelavent, as the problem transcends manufacturers.

I have two computers running side by side. They both run Win XP, one Home and one Pro. I'm using two monitors but I want to be able to use the same keyboard and mouse for both computers. My question is if I use a KVM switch that supports USB would it be compatible with my wirelss mouse and wireless keyboard that both have USB interfaces? Also, any recommendations for a good KVM switch? I would like one that also gives me the option to share my speakers.

We have two laptops and one wireless (HP Photosmart C7280) printer. Our laptops both connect to the internet wirelessly through a router. I was able to install and can print wirelessly from my laptop (a Mac) with no problems. However, we cannot figure out how to print wirelessly from my boyfriend's laptop (a Dell). We have installed the printer software and the printer itself on his laptop, and the laptop is able to identify the wireless printer over the network. We made sure that the printer is set to "online" and that file/printer sharing is turned on. But, whenever we go to print any kind of a file, we get an error message simply stating that the printer was unable to print and that we should run the troubleshooter. So, we run the troubleshooter, and we get this message:"The troubleshooter was not able to ping (detect a connection with) your print server. This might be the cause of the problem. Verify that your network is configured correctly and that you are connected to the network."
I am more used to working with Macs and my boyfriend is computer illiterate, so we're a bit lost as to what this means. I was able to set up a wireless network connection on his laptop, but beyond that I'm not sure what else to do. Most of the other advice I've seen online involves a wireless printer that is wired to one computer, and another laptop trying to wirelessly access that printer through the connected computer...if that makes any sense. Our printer isn't wired to anything, and we just can't figure out why it'll print wirelessly on the Mac but not on the Dell laptop. Any ideas?

Yesterday he was trying to copy a DVD. As far as I understand (which is limited), it froze and he turned it off. When you try to switch it on, you get a black screen with a white message. the jist of it says that Windows shut down and that to restart it you need to choose a mode - it gives you options 'safe mode' 'last known settings that worked' 'normal mode' etc. We have tried all of these modes. the most successful of which always looks really promising - you get the blue windows screen, logo and jingle it looks like it is starting up but then dies and the screen goes black. When you turn it on you get the black screen again and go around in circles.

My laptop keeps on crashing, whilst playing on world of warcraft, my laptop just completely switches itself off without warning. As of yet, has only crashed whilst playing wow. This is also not due to overheating, as im using a separate fan unit, after heat issues arose Using an acer laptop - aspire 5610 - with Xp proffesional, media center. Also sometimes, after restarting the laptop, and selecting the screen name, it comes up with my background wallpaper, but no icons, start bar, etc - only way to get rid of this is turning the power button off. Included a hijackthis log (hope i've done it right.

I have a (really) old Compaq Armada M300 running Win2K Pro. It was given to me several years ago from a buddy who upgraded. Old, slow, not much space, but we use it daily as an extremely convenient 'dummy terminal' to get to the internet & work on documents/files on the desktop upstairs.Yesterday afternoon, while nobody was working on it, it suddenly attempted to restart. Just a quirk that I thought wouldn't matter. Wrong it is now stuck in a never-ending cycle of restarting compaq intro screen, then windows startup screen, then an extremely quick blue screen that flashes too quickly for me to even see what it's saying, then restarts all over.I've tried all various ways to start in setup (safe mode, safe mode w/ networking, etc), all different options produce the same result.Since it was given to me on a whim so many years ago, I don't have the install CD, nor do I have a boot disk for it. According to what I've found, I need the CD to create a win2K boot disk.

I have a problem with my laptop & it is really starting to do my head in. I got my vaio about 2 years ago, it was second hand, so came with no CDs. nIt has been running fine with no problems until this morning. It is constantly restarting, with a blue screen that flashes up momentarily.I saw something that someone mentioned about it being to do with the wireless, so I've switched that off, and it has stopped restarting. As soon as I switch it back on though, it goes back in to constantly restarting.I can't even seem to get into the menu to start with safe mode. I've tried to restore the system to when it was working fine, but this hasn't helped.

I just have a query with regard to my laptop. Before I go to bed at night I always instruct my laptop's monitor to switch off via the Power Schemes screen, however I tend to find that it often simply flashes off then switches back on again immediately, or it doesn't go off at all. More often than not I have to repeat the process twice (Power Schemes -> Turn off monitor -> After 2 mins -> Apply/OK) before it obeys. Any ideas as to why this might be?

I had the XP Security Center virus and, perhaps foolishly, reformatted - or more formally, "system reformat" for "returning the computer to factory conditions", as my friend who helped me with this process called it - my computer and reinstalled the operating system. But when I turned it on for the first time, there was, naturally, no internet connection. However, while I would normally proceed to set one up, there was, for some reason, no "View Available Wireless Networks" option when I right click on the little connection icon at the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

I unfortunately had to reinstall windows onto my laptop (dell inspiron 1520). However, a windows disk didn't come with the computer so I used the one that came with my desktop (dell xps 400). It's running fine and all that jazz but I am clueless on how to set up my wireless connection. When I first bought the computer the first time I opened it it automatically picked up the wireless connection and all I had to do is type in a password and such. Now I guess I'm starting from scratch... There's no webcam software on it or anything like it came with. The resolution doesnt even fit the same after adjusting it. (It's close but still a little stretched out)

I reinstalled windows xp sp3 on a old laptop. Everything went fine except for internet connectivity. I have a wireless network to which I connect several computers and devices and everything works like it should. When I try to connect my laptop to this network, it fails.Every 5 seconds it goes from not connected to acquiring network address.I am sure that the key is correct, I am sure that my router is belkin router is wireless G and so is the Ralink RT2500 card. I am also sure that I have not white listed MAC addresses so my laptop won't connect. Basically I have done every simple thing that perhaps could be causing the problem.

My son had his Dell laptop at college and was using their wireless network successfully. He came home last week and tried using his laptop on our home wireless network (w/Linksys router). He said he was not able to always connect so he tried to set up (configure, repair) the wireless connection himself (always a dangerous thing to do).Now he gets no internet at all (IE always goes into 'offline' mode) under Windows XP home.I've tried to trouble shoot the connection but so far I have been unsuccessful. The laptop can see the wireless network (it shows as available and connected). There is something wrong with the network connection that IE uses but I don't know how to go about fixing it.

I got my computer fixed See thread I am having another slight problem. I don't think that this problem was necessarily caused because of the others issues I have recently fixed because I have had this issue in the passed but it just seemed to fix itself. I have a HP zd7000us laptop with wireless capabilities. However I the system does not even show any wireless network available. My desktop in my house has no problems going online with the wireless, neither does my psp for that matter. It's like the computer doesn't even know it's there. I went to the hardware wizard on my system and it says the wireless card is working properly but it will not see any available wireless networks.

my laptop froze...i turned it off and thats here the problems began. long story short i had to replace my ram. i reinstalled xp and couldnt get online at all. i took it to the comp. repair place at my school and they told me 2 conflicting stories. they got my laptop able to connect to wireless but it blue screens after about a minute or 2. the screen flashes the blue screen but doesnt stay up and the laptop turns off. my power adapter doesnt charge the laptop unlessyou jiggle it and move it in a certain area...he said this makes things woese and is all due to the motherboard being fried. thing is this has happened before even when my laptop was working fine...i had to jiggle or move the adapter plug around until it held a charge. i have windows xp and my laptop bluescreens as i try to go online. is there a remedy to this.

I'm working on a Dell laptop for a friend Latitude D630 running Windows XP Pro SP2. Seems the only place he can connect to a wireless network is at his home.I now have the laptop trying to figure what the problem is. Here's what I found. I was able to connect to the internet via a wireless at my place. First on another friend's wireless unsecured connection. I was also able to connect via my own connection a WEP secured connection. Connectivity lasted for about 30 minutes. I was suddenly disconnected with a message saying the there was no connectivity via my WEP connection. I then tried the unsecured connection and was able to connect to the net at least for a few minutes. Since that time I've had some trouble connecting. I've opened a command prompt and entered ipconfig / release, then ipconfig /renew. It works on the unsecured wireless connection, but not on the WEP network.

Computers are 2 identical Dell Latitude D600 with XP Pro.Dell #1 was given to me. It had never had ANY updates applied, had 56 Trojans and a bunch of other problems. I took it to the local library and used their WiFi connection to download Grisoft AVG, Ad-Aware and Microsoft Malware Removal to clean it up. I then was given an identical used Dell #2. it was at the SP2 level, so I again went to the library and updated this one with 85 XP updates. Then, as a learning experience, I restored XP Pro on Dell #1 from a Dell CD, P/N 1R594 and then installed SP2 on it. All went well.I then tried to use WiFi on Dell #1. I tried to create a new connection, but when I clicked on finish nothing got created.I looked at Dell #2 which has a working WiFi connection and noticed that when I click on All Programs I see an entry for Dell Wireless, containing 2 itemsDell Wireless WLAN card Readme and Dell Wireless WLAN card Utility This entry does not appear on Dell #1 even though I used it on a Wireless network prior to the XP PRO CD restore today.
