I have a Sony Vaio FS-500P laptop, with XP. I am constantly getting a Wireless Switch Utility Setting error when my system starts. Is it a driver problem, if so, can someone give me some guidance?

I'm trying to printer and file share the two together BUT I've exhausted myself in trying to make it happen. Has anyone successfully done this? Am I missing something? I'm using two monitors but I want to be able to use the same keyboard and mouse for both computers. My question is if I use a KVM switch that supports USB would it be compatible with my wirelss mouse and wireless keyboard that both have USB interfaces? Also, any recommendations for a good KVM switch? I would like one that also gives me the option to share my speakers.

That may well be my fault; I am relatively inexperienced so may be using the wrong search terms. My apologies if that is the case.I have a Sony Vaio laptop running XP with a built in wireless which can be switched on or off with a sliding button at the front. The laptop has not been used for a couple of weeks, and now I find that it will not start up properly as long as the wireless is switched on. If it is on, the laptop constantly restarts then crashes and restarts again, never getting started up properly. If I switch off the wireless, it will start perfectly normally. If I then switch the wireless on after a normal startup, it may take a few seconds or a few minutes, but it will then crash and go back to the restart-crash cycle. There is an error screen which comes up but it is too briefly displayed to read it or get a screenshot.
I did a little research and tried a system restore which did not work. I also tried restarting without my wireless keyboard and mouse hooked up. When I did that and switched on the wireless, it stayed up long enough for me to connect to my network (the only time it was up long enough) then reverted to the restart/crash cycle again.
I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but my XP switches to the 'switch user' setting every time the screen saver comes on. It gets really annoying so I wondered if anyone could tell me how to turn it off.

I think we are talking "network key" or "Wired equivalency Privacy Key". I know nothing about setting up a wireless connection so don't want to risk disturbing the existing set up which works fine; I just want to add password access.One computer has Windows XP Home and the other Vista Home Premium. Can anyone give me some not too technical advice that will help me do this please?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to get a Zonet wireless 802.11g PCI Adapter work in my desktop with little success. I have wireless loptop presently working through a Linksys Router. I copied the internet settings to a jump drive and transfer it to the desktop. The desktop wireless icon showed that it made connection but when i tried to go online using IE IT ALWAYS show web page not found. Is there some other setting in internet Option or elsewhere that is suppose to be change or set for the adapter to get on line. Using the ethernet card in the desktop i can access the internet easily. but the wireless.... this is my sad story
View 12 Replies View RelatedI just bought a KVM swith (JustCom) for 2 XP machines, and it worked for a bout 10 seconds )as both machines were booting) then one of the PCs "found new hardware" and "installed" it, and it stopped working. There is a key combination to make it toggle, and it simply doesn't work. It could be the fault of the switch I'm sure, but then I would think they would blame it on windows. I noticed in the Device Manager that it says Com1, Com2 and the VGA adaptor have problems, basically there are no drivers installed. I tried to reinstall, update, roll back, install from the Windows CD, tried a windows update, and it says there are no drivers available to install or reinstall. I tried several System Restores and it always
says it couldn't do the restore (no reason given). Any suggestions? The only thing I can think of is maybe trying to Uninstall the hardware, or maybe reinstall windows
I was trying to get rid of the sprtcmd.exe problem first by using msconf as suggested by someone. I then got rid of that problem by following another method found on the forum. But every time I boot up, I get the system config utility telling me that I have to start up in normal fashion and with enough clicking I get rid of it. But how do I stop making it come up to begin with?

I have a Pentium 4, Windows XP Home Edition and this problem is driving me mad. My pc says dskchkr.exe - application error. When I try to run diskchecker it says "it is unable to run in autofix mode because volume c: is in use by another application" and asks if i want to schedule it to run on startup. It will not run on startup. I also have had this message onscreen "The file or directory c:WINDOWSPrefetchMCUIMGR.exe-0E667E1B.pf is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility. !!!
I have taken Macafee off my pc (or I HOPE so), and now I have NO diskchecker on AT ALL. I think I have some programs on which I thought I had removed but I cant get rid of them all without paying. Im losing my mind !!!!

I finally decided to install the service pack 2. During the install I keep getting messages of the form: Service pack 2 could not back up registry key
XXXXX to file c:windows$NtServicePackUninstall$ eg00013: Access is denied. Anyone knows what the problem might be? I located the directory and it does get removed when I cancel the update. I'm running as an administrator.
Every time I switch on my machine and try to connect to the internet, I get a dialogue box: Web page is unavailable while offline. To view this page, click connect. When I click connect, I can view the page and don't get the error message again until I switch off the machine. Why does this happen?

I was asked to locate the ethernet port at the back of my printer, plug the ethernet port cable and connect it to the Verizon router. Unfortunately, my printer does not have an ethernet port. I was told to call HP,and I did but did not get much help.What should I do to get my wireless printer work? I have a PC and a laptop. Prior to Verizon, I have a DSL and Vonage, both routers and print server did not have the same problem.

After doing all the Microsoft Updates, ALL the wireless driver installs from Gateway there is no 'Wireless Network Connection' icon. I have also checked Device Manager and there is no wireless adapter. Before this exercise she was running wireless fine. It does work 'hard wired' but no wireless icon.

I want the basic Windows XP system files and drivers on my "C" drive and then I want to accumulate data files (word processing, spreadsheets, photos, music files, etc.) on the new partition which in this case has been labeled the "G" drive. The difficulty I am having is getting getting the "Documents and Settings" to move over to the "G" drive. So that when I want to load photographs from my camera to the computer it goes for C:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Instead I would like it to go to G:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Using Windows Explorer I changed the file name of "My Documents" to 'Windows XP old path My Documents" and then I was going to set up a new path to the "G" drive through Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Managment>Disk Management.
However I noticed that when I clicked on Start in the bottom left hand corner and it puts up that little window that "My Documents" which was listed now had the new title 'Windows XP old path My Documents' which I believe means I haven't gotten to the proper place to change the main configuration for Documents and Settings. Long way of saying how do I change the basic configuration for where Document and Settings are stored to a new location.
The wireless internet isn't working... I don't know what wireless card I have.. I should only have to install the driver, but I can't get online to download it.
View 10 Replies View RelatedWe have two laptops and one wireless (HP Photosmart C7280) printer. Our laptops both connect to the internet wirelessly through a router. I was able to install and can print wirelessly from my laptop (a Mac) with no problems. However, we cannot figure out how to print wirelessly from my boyfriend's laptop (a Dell). We have installed the printer software and the printer itself on his laptop, and the laptop is able to identify the wireless printer over the network. We made sure that the printer is set to "online" and that file/printer sharing is turned on. But, whenever we go to print any kind of a file, we get an error message simply stating that the printer was unable to print and that we should run the troubleshooter. So, we run the troubleshooter, and we get this message:"The troubleshooter was not able to ping (detect a connection with) your print server. This might be the cause of the problem. Verify that your network is configured correctly and that you are connected to the network."
I am more used to working with Macs and my boyfriend is computer illiterate, so we're a bit lost as to what this means. I was able to set up a wireless network connection on his laptop, but beyond that I'm not sure what else to do. Most of the other advice I've seen online involves a wireless printer that is wired to one computer, and another laptop trying to wirelessly access that printer through the connected computer...if that makes any sense. Our printer isn't wired to anything, and we just can't figure out why it'll print wirelessly on the Mac but not on the Dell laptop. Any ideas?
I have aproblem with my XP machine.when i boot up the small wireless icon says its not connected,Also when i click to view available wireless networks that there are none in range, i reboot the pc and it might resolve it .More often than not it doesnt.Also i sometimes get a yellow exclamation mark over the wlan in device manager.I update the driver and it resolves until next time i boot back up the pc.Wireless switch is on. My 2 other pcs wrk perfect.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIf i log onto my computer and just go into network connections, the computer is not able to look for wireless networks. if i hit the button to find networks, it gives me some strange error message. i have noticed though that i can fix the problem if i manually go into services and start the wireless zero configuration service myself. i configured this service to start automatically, and to keep restarting if attempts to start fail, but for whatever reason, the service does not start on its own when i boot the computer. once i start the service, i am able to connect without any problems.
The error message i get says something about finding more than one wirless device. i have a belkin usb wireless card, and before i installed the one i have now, i had another that coincidentally was the same size and also made by belkin. thinking that maybe some software was still on the computer, causing it to find both, and consequently not being able to connect to either, i uninstalled all the software for both routers and deleted all the related program files off of the computer. then i reinstalled and...got the same exact problem.
When I open up the Wizard and click "next", it goes to the "options" screen, but when I click on "custom setup" or "next" (again) I get an error message that says "Error: An error occurred while setting scanner preferences. If the scanner is being used [which it isn't], wait for it to complete the task, and then try again."I'm using a Dell Dimension E510 with a Dell AIO 942.Please help, if at all possible. I've downloaded some file recovery programs, but have since removed them. I don't know what else could be interfering here.
View 14 Replies View Relatedim running windows xp home edition sp3. while shutting down, my kid switched the pc off by the main switch. im getting a loop of starting up over and over and iv tried every option in advanced, ssafe mode etc, i just keep getting this loop of starting again and again. i got the bsod with unmountabe boot volume and a code, went to microsoft and the code cannot be found, i retyped it 3 times to make sure id typed it right and got error code not found. im using a netbook to find a resolution and i dont have any connectors to my pc. i havnt installed any new hardware or software and my gut is telling me that its because of the pc being swithced off by the mains during shutdown because i had no problems untill this happened. if i cant get my pc to switch on, how do i sort it out. my windows disc wont work.

My laptop was in perfect working order last night but when I came to turn it on this morning it wouldn't. No screen, no sound. Tried again and got a high pitched continuos beep from it so turned it off/on again, nothing. Pressed F8 to try start it up in safe mode but it wont do that either. There is NO screen at all coming up. If i cant start it up in safe mode is it DEAD?
View 8 Replies View RelatedYesterday he was trying to copy a DVD. As far as I understand (which is limited), it froze and he turned it off. When you try to switch it on, you get a black screen with a white message. the jist of it says that Windows shut down and that to restart it you need to choose a mode - it gives you options 'safe mode' 'last known settings that worked' 'normal mode' etc. We have tried all of these modes. the most successful of which always looks really promising - you get the blue windows screen, logo and jingle it looks like it is starting up but then dies and the screen goes black. When you turn it on you get the black screen again and go around in circles.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor some reason, if I log on to my account (an administrator account), then log off, none of the other users (my husband's admin. account or the kids' limited user accts) can be signed on. XP sits on the welcome screen for an unusually long time, then goes to just the user's wallpaper screen (no icons, no taskbar, nothing). Can't pull up task manager or warm boot, have to shut down & restart. I can log on any of the other accounts, and log off, and switch to mine, but not vice versa. Even if I don't do ANYTHING after signing on. So, the problems seems to be with my account settings somehow.
