Cannot Turn Off Computer Using Start Button
Mar 4, 2005
After pressing the start button, and going to either retart or turn off, this does not work I have to press the power button on the pc tower for at least 2 minutes. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?

I downloaded some windows updates but not all of them installed. When I go to Turn Off Computer, the "Turn Off" button has changed, indicating that when I hit it, it will install the updates. There's also a field I can click which will Turn Off without installing the updates. When I click the Turn Off buttion, it attempts to install two updates. It doesn't appear to be successful. Every time I Turn Off Computer it apparently tries to install the same two updates. I can reboot and do this over and over and they don't "take".There's nothing in Event Viewer to indicate what's going on. I couldn't find any installation logs though I'm not sure where to look.

Yesterday, I was half way through burning an ISO file to disc using [program name deleted my mod.] (have used this many times previously without a problem), when the computer froze. Nothing worked (mouse, keyboard) and the only thing I could do was turn it off at the power button. I left it for 10 minutes, started the computer up again and the (black) screen came up giving 'you need to reboot' and 'insert a bootable disc' messages. I inserted my Windows XP disc as it's the only one I have and don't have a bootable disc, and after while I was given 3 options - one was to repair, one was to escape and I can't remember what the 3rd one was. Anyway I pressed repair and after a minute or two it said it couldn't find the hard drive (or disc) so it was unable to repair and the only thing I could do was quit. After leaving the computer off for a period of time, I switched it back on and it came up with the disc scan screen details and went through the process quickly and it said one of the sectors had been repaired and it was 'back to normal' after that.
The computer is 4 years old (Intel Pentium 4/3.2gHz/1GB RAM/Hard Drive 149GB) and I've had intermittent problems with the CPU overheating due to dust etc which I've cleaned out from time to time (as you do) and all has been well. So, in total this has happened 3 times in 24 hours but on the other two occasions when it froze, after turning it off and leaving it for a couple of minutes, it came back again as normal. The computer seems OK when it's not under load (using the internet/emails/typing documents/photo editing) but the first time you ask it a big question (e.g. copy or convert a disc) it will freeze. Is this a CPU, hard drive or motherboard problem or any other ideas please.

I believe its a problem with the actual start up button instead of the computer itself, ive pried the thing open, seeing the generator is on, everythings in place and there are lights on, showing there is power. any ideas?

I saw a forum like this before, but considering the fact that I'm really dumb with computers, I'm hoping someone can run me through what I'm supposed to do to fix the problem.I'm having the same problem as I found here on this thread, The computer's just been reformatted with Windows XP Home Edition earlier this week and starting yesterday, I could not access the "Turn off Computer" in the Start Menu. I also do not have access to the "Run" option nor can I "Control+Atl+Del"

To restore the Turn off Computer button in the start menu. I had a single user account and did not need to log in to the computer. One fine morning I find that the Turn off Computer icon has vanished from the start menu! Moreover, I cant press ctrl+alt+del to start the task manager, it says "Task Manager has been disabled by your Administrater". My account was an administrator account with full privileges, but it got changed to a debugger account. I created another user account with administrator rights, logged into that account and changed the properties of my original account to full administrative account, but when I logged back on to my old account, I still find that the situation is still the same. The only way I can switch off my computer is by logging off, and then selecting the Turn Off option in the logoff screen, which is tedious and of course irritating.

I noticed that i have a weird problem. After resuming from hibernation, I noticed that whenever i want to shut the PC thru clicking the "Start" button and then "Turn off computer", nothing happens at all - just the screen refreshes and nothing more than that. It's supposed that i should get that famous dialog which would allow 2 me 2 shut, restart or log off or... but nothing really come up at all. This happens only when i resume from hibernation but it's working OK if i bring the PC to work thru cold booting. But when hibernating and then resuming, it's not working again ANY explanation to this strange behavior.

I've experienced the painfulness of my comp not shutting down right. I usually have to hit the button on windows about 10 times. Then I hit the one on the computer about 10 times as well. This is getting annoying and its really agitating when you think you've turned it off and when you come back its on.

After I click "Turn off computer" in the start menu, I get an hourglass and it takes over a minute for the Turn off/restart/log off box to come up. Anyone know why this is happening? I can still work with the computer and do other stuff, but it just takes a while for the box to come up. It's really annoying.

I have Windows XP w/SP-2 installed on a laptop. Last night, I was notified that there were four critical updates to be installed. I clicked to install them. When I shut the computer down, I noticed that the "Turn off" button had the little security shield icon superimposed and mousing over the button said that it would install updates and shut down my computer. I had never noticed anything like this before, but I assumed it was a new feature that came with a recent Windows update.
Now I'm worried that I was wrong, because after shutting down at 11:30 pm or so last night, the computer seems to be hung. I have a screen with a blue background, the Windows XP logo, and I get a message that alternates between saying "Do not turn off or unplug your computer; it will turn off automatically." and "Installing update 1 of 4." Again, this is behaviour I've never seen before, and has been going on now for over 9 hours. Unfortunately, I did not make note of the critical updates, but I seem to remember that the file sizes were not that large.

well, this problem started a little while ago, Ive got a 2.93ghz P4, and 1GB memory, so i know my computer is (plenty) fast enough.when i click on the button in the start menu "Turn Off Computer", my PC shows the hourglass, and i cant click on anything, this will go on for about a minute or 2, once it took 5 minutes. then the small box with shutdown options comes up finally, and then after the light blue screen gets to "Shutting Down...". it takes maybe a bit longer than expected but im not to sure about that.

My start button, the quick launch bar and the task bar where the clock is and where it shows what windows you have open is all gone. I was playing a game and when I exited out of it it was all missing. If the game matters it was Hidden Expedition Everest. I ran spybot and AVG antivirus. All is clean.

After booting up OK, any attempt to click on the Start button leads to a box appearing labelled RUNDLL. Within this box the letter 'r' is repeatedly and continuously printed. The box can be closed but the error recurs if the Start button is clicked again. At the same time there are intermittent 'bleeps' from the speakers, and clicking on ANY icon on the desktop opens only the recycle bin! If you try making a search with Google again the letter 'r' is repeatedly generated in the seach box.
Repeated scans with (updated) Norton Antivrus 2005 and with Ad-aware have not helped. Strangely, at some times the computer behaves completely normally.

Hello, The other day I formatted my computer and reinstalled everything back onto it. I've run a few spyware scans and deleted all (most were cookies) and also some virus scans with AVG. It picked up about 11 viruses! but I quarantined them. Anyways, the problem is there's no shutdown or run button on my start menu! I've never heard of that before. So I'm wondering what it is. I've tried to access the registry editor by pressing Windows + R, typing regedit in Command Prompt, and browsing through the Windows folder for it, but it comes up with "Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator" I don't get this, I AM the administrator! What could it be!?

If your system hangs about 2 or 3 minutes at startup, where you can't access the Start button or the Taskbar, it may be due to one specific service running in the background. Microsoft put out a patch for this but it didn't work for me. Here's what you do:1. Click on Start/Run, type 'msconfig', then click 'OK'.2. Go to the 'Services' tab, find the 'Background Intelligent Transfer' service, disable it, apply the changes & reboot.

One of the biggest problems I'm having with this activation problem is that I have no task bar in the safe mode. The only way I can get anything to run is through the run command in the task manager (ctrl-alt-del still works). Is there a way to get the start key back?

The only way I can get started is Control/Alt/Delete, which raises Task Manager, then enter URL for Internet Explorer (.exe) to get into the internet, then either hit the Read Mail button to get Outlook Express, or enter the Outlook Express URL into Task Manager. Can't access C-drive at all. Haven't tried A or D drives yet

recently I loaded up my computer, logged inunder my user profile (I'm running Windows XP SP2), Everything looked normal until the system completed loading and my wallpaper icons vanished (Wallpaper stays), My start button & Task manager bar vanished as well(including the clock).I logged out of my profile, and was able to use the profile I had set up for my mom for about a day... but then her profile did the same thing. I tried my daughter's profile and everything is gone. When I looked in my listing of what applications are running, I've noticed that my explorer.exe is gone.
