View 4 RepliesI downloaded some windows updates but not all of them installed. When I go to Turn Off Computer, the "Turn Off" button has changed, indicating that when I hit it, it will install the updates. There's also a field I can click which will Turn Off without installing the updates. When I click the Turn Off buttion, it attempts to install two updates. It doesn't appear to be successful. Every time I Turn Off Computer it apparently tries to install the same two updates. I can reboot and do this over and over and they don't "take".There's nothing in Event Viewer to indicate what's going on. I couldn't find any installation logs though I'm not sure where to look.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've experienced the painfulness of my comp not shutting down right. I usually have to hit the button on windows about 10 times. Then I hit the one on the computer about 10 times as well. This is getting annoying and its really agitating when you think you've turned it off and when you come back its on.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter pressing the start button, and going to either retart or turn off, this does not work I have to press the power button on the pc tower for at least 2 minutes. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday, I was half way through burning an ISO file to disc using [program name deleted my mod.] (have used this many times previously without a problem), when the computer froze. Nothing worked (mouse, keyboard) and the only thing I could do was turn it off at the power button. I left it for 10 minutes, started the computer up again and the (black) screen came up giving 'you need to reboot' and 'insert a bootable disc' messages. I inserted my Windows XP disc as it's the only one I have and don't have a bootable disc, and after while I was given 3 options - one was to repair, one was to escape and I can't remember what the 3rd one was. Anyway I pressed repair and after a minute or two it said it couldn't find the hard drive (or disc) so it was unable to repair and the only thing I could do was quit. After leaving the computer off for a period of time, I switched it back on and it came up with the disc scan screen details and went through the process quickly and it said one of the sectors had been repaired and it was 'back to normal' after that.
The computer is 4 years old (Intel Pentium 4/3.2gHz/1GB RAM/Hard Drive 149GB) and I've had intermittent problems with the CPU overheating due to dust etc which I've cleaned out from time to time (as you do) and all has been well. So, in total this has happened 3 times in 24 hours but on the other two occasions when it froze, after turning it off and leaving it for a couple of minutes, it came back again as normal. The computer seems OK when it's not under load (using the internet/emails/typing documents/photo editing) but the first time you ask it a big question (e.g. copy or convert a disc) it will freeze. Is this a CPU, hard drive or motherboard problem or any other ideas please.
I have Windows XP w/SP-2 installed on a laptop. Last night, I was notified that there were four critical updates to be installed. I clicked to install them. When I shut the computer down, I noticed that the "Turn off" button had the little security shield icon superimposed and mousing over the button said that it would install updates and shut down my computer. I had never noticed anything like this before, but I assumed it was a new feature that came with a recent Windows update.
Now I'm worried that I was wrong, because after shutting down at 11:30 pm or so last night, the computer seems to be hung. I have a screen with a blue background, the Windows XP logo, and I get a message that alternates between saying "Do not turn off or unplug your computer; it will turn off automatically." and "Installing update 1 of 4." Again, this is behaviour I've never seen before, and has been going on now for over 9 hours. Unfortunately, I did not make note of the critical updates, but I seem to remember that the file sizes were not that large.
I Dont Know What Has Happened To My Computer But It Looks Everything Has Gone Bad. The Task Manager Is Disabled By Administrator When Pressing Ctrl Alt Delete. No Turn Off Button On The Start Menu! Cannot Open Anything In New Window Or Cannot Click A Link, It Never Redirects!

In XP and Firefox Browser, was changing screen resolution sizes to control
the desktop icon size - have an 17" monitor and set resolution size to 1152x864 - but now the middle button on top right corner of screen will not not revert back to the double square allowing me to minimize my window - it seems to be stuck in Maximum size so I have to reduce the screen with the cursor, otherwise I loose everything above the Function Bar of File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, etc. I tried lowering the resolution, but that did not seem to work either...also when I click on this middel button between _ and X - it enlarges beyond my screen size and I cannot scroll
I click the green 'play all arrow' on the left of windows explorer when I'm in a music folder, it doesnt do anything.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I push the mute button on the keyboard it does not turn off the volume but it does do the red no sound line. I also can't turn the volume up or down from keyboard. When I go to sound control and manually adjust by clicking mute and dragging my volume up and dopwn on master control that does not work either. Theu opnly way I can adjust sound or mute is to manually scroll the wave sound or mute wave sound with my mouse. help-master control sound does not have any master control and neither does the keyboard express volume/mute feature

View 14 Replies View RelatedOkay so I usually leave my computer on all the time. I went to bed and when I got up it was off and couldn't get it to turn on. So I assumed it might be the power supply so I went and bought a new one from stamples. He turned on for maybe 5 seconds then turned off. so I took it back thinking maybe I didn't have enough watts. The higher watts didn't doanything. I am lost without my computer can anyone help? I have Win XP..Could it be the fan? Even though the fan worked when i plugged in first PS...Second didnt do anything. Could it be something to do with motherboard?

Plus my Tablet side of things hasn't worked in a long time and I was hoping the clean install would fix that. But my recovery DVD isn't working (could be user error). I DO have apps that I need to keep and I think I've backed them up to my external HD correctly.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI de-infected a windows XP system with SP3 and IE7. Once I did that, http no longer loaded in IE. It does not work in portable firefox either. I can type in ftp:// ftp address and IE works. Likewise I
can use https:// and the page loads! What is going on: I tried:
1) Reset ie7 as per MS
2) Removed IE 7
2a) IE6 would not load http either
3) reapplied SP3
4) Repair install win winxp cd.
5) Deleted and re-installed network card
This is where I am now. Still no http://. Since multiple applications are affected, I do not think it is a browser helper.
My start button, the quick launch bar and the task bar where the clock is and where it shows what windows you have open is all gone. I was playing a game and when I exited out of it it was all missing. If the game matters it was Hidden Expedition Everest. I ran spybot and AVG antivirus. All is clean.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have reviewed the following thread and discovered that the solution does not work on my WinXP Pro SP2 computer.Solved: XP shut down window Jag11 in post#3 of the thread and the original poster applied this fix which worked for the original poster, CactusJack: Control Panel>User Accounts Click Change the way users log on or off, tick the Use the Welcome screen, then click Apply Options. When I click on Start, there are only two buttons at the bottom: Log Off and Turn Off Computer, and no green icon for Restart. The green icon can be found when the Turn Off Computer icon is pressed and appears to the right of Stand by and Turn Off icons in the displayed window (Turn off computer) at the center of the screen. Is there a fix for this problem - i.e. how do I get the Restart icon back at the botton of the Start button display? Or, is this how WinXP Pro SP2 is normally, and not considered a problem?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen starts the PC it boots normally till it reaches where it shows windows XP logo then the screen gets blank. he press the sleep button on the keyboard, then after that press the hardware switch on/off button (not the reset button) on the tower of the hard box. After pressing switch on/off button, he gets directly (pay attention to this) to the login screen where he can see the usernames for all users. He has to do this procedure every time he would like to boot the desktop.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe "sleep" button on my computer keyboard won't effect the hibernate function on my Windows XP Home Edition computer. It worked well until several months ago and then, all of a sudden, it stopped functioning. I can get it to hibernate by using Start-Turn Off Computer-Stand-By, but the "Sleep Button" does not work. I did some Internet research and one site indicated that it might be a driver problem.
