Desktop Icons, nothing Will Open Left Mouse Button Not Working
Jul 8, 2005
The left hand mouse button will not work on the desktop icons, nothing will open unless I use the right and open button. I'm running Win XP hope SP2. I have tried all the usual mouse settings that came with windows and the software for the mouse. The mouse I am using is wireless but I have also tried others with the same result
Why is it that some programs won't open with the left mouse button? I have to use the right button and click on the "open" line in the drop-down menu that appears.Sometimes the left button works after about 15 to 20 seconds.
When I double click using the left mouse button the file does not open. Instead the seach screen comes up. This has just started happing lately. How could I remedy this situation.
I have White Box on my Desktop In Upper-Left Corner of my screen that I cannot delete or otherwise remove. I am running Windows XP, and McAfee and Ad-Aware say I have no viruses. In trying to get rid of this box I have discovered that I can expand and reduce the size of the box from the lower right hand corner, and if I drag a web page shortcut icon from my desktop over the box, the web page is displayed. When a web page is being displayed inside the box there are scroll bars on the right and bottom sides to scroll around the web page. If I click on a hyperlink within the box, my default web browser is opened to the link. At first I was using IE, and then I switched to Firefox, and it made no difference. Periodically, the web page being displayed inside the box will disapear, along with the scrolling bars, leaving behind a white box.
When there is a web page being displayed in the box I can right click on the box and I get a menu with the following options: Back, Forward, Save Background as, Set Background, Copy Background, Set as Desktop Item, Select All, Paste, Create Shortcut, Ad to Favorites, View Source, Print, Refresh, Export to Microsoft Excel, Print, Properties. Some of these items are grayed out. If I select properties, there is a "General" tab with the name of the web page, Protocol Info, Type, Connection, Address, Size, Created, Modified. There is a Certificates button at the bottom in addition to OK and Cancel buttons.
I am running Windows XP, Intel P4 (531), 1024 RAM, Gateway PC. Each time I restart my PC, all of the icons on my desktop reset and line up on the left side of the screen. I move them back to where I want them and organize. If I reboot again, the icons reset again. What can be causing this and how can I fix the problem?
I've recently re-sized my task-bar to hold my usual desktop icons in the quick-launch area and moved the bar to the left of the screen with auto-hide enabled. All was well until recently when it began to remain on-screen for about 1 min when not in focus. Then it recently began to open on start-up at a size of only 1 icon wide instead of the previously set 3 icons wide. I've made no such changes to the configuration and am curious to know if anyone might know why/how it seems to have obtained a "mind of its own"???
Just wondering if anyone can tell me how to get these back on the screen. My kids were playing with the computer and now the first row of icons on the left have moved off screen (all icons have shifted left), and even the bar at the bottom with the Start button has shifted left. BTW, this is a Korean version of XP.
The desktop in my daughter's Inspiron 6000(4 years old machine. WindowsXP home) has no icons, taskbar or start button. This began yesterday morning. No new downloads before this started. Trojan removed two months ago from the system and has been working well since.Problem seems to be common going by my search but the only solution that everyone seems to be leading to eventually is a repair re-install. Have tried reinstalling explorer.exe to no avail. I only get a one second flash of the taskbar. Any suggestions before doing the re-install? BTW, checked for new malware, the system is clean.
Whenever I start up my computer, I can no longer see the Start button, the Taskbar or any of my Desktop icons. I have tried system restore but there were no valid restore points, and re-installing Windows from the CD has not solved the problem.Has anybody got any ideas about how to fix this? The system also seems to be running more slowly, and on some occasions it will automatically restart about 10 minutes after I have turned it on. I've run a virus update (with updated virus definitions) but it has not found anything.
I have XP Home Edition. My problem is that when I try to log into an account (any account) I see the desktop icons, task bar, start button for a second and then suddenly they disappear and I am left with the background. I can not bring up task manager (cntrl+alt+delete) or anything else. I have tried a few things:
1. Ran spyware be gone
2. Ran adaware (got a 'cannot find shell.dll' error after doing this)
3. Tried to using selective startup and disabling startup items (when I reboot it turns it back on)
4. Tried creating a new user account --- problem still occurs.
5. Finally tried a reinstall of XP. Significant to note that during this installation I get an error related to explorer.exe.
The first time I tried to reinstall it aborted the installation. I ran a repair on the programs (from disk that came from Dell with my pc). I then tried the reinstall again....I got further this time but still when it was at the point of installing explorer it through another error and said that the program was not installed.I do not know what to do next!
My intellimouse works correctly for awhile then double click fails. When this occurs the mouse control panel fails to open. Shutting down and restart corrects the problem-but only for awhile and then the same thing happens over again. I reloaded software to no avail. any help?
We ended up with a virus AV8. Got rid of the file but now the start button, desktop icons and taskbar are not showing up or working. I have read a lot of the suggestions that people have been giving and I renamed the explorer.exe and can use that, but can't get my desktop restored nor my taskbar back.
Whenever I RIGHT CLICK on a Icon/Folder/Editing Pictures my computer says that Zhotkey.exe is not responding and it shows an hourglass for like 5 mins or so and then goes back to my desktop with everything back to normal. That is until it happens again and again, etc. IDK what to do. Basically to put it in a simple version: Right click on ANY file, icon, etc. makes me reboot my computer. Now onto the Sysdaig64.exe problem. How to remove this program so it DOESN'T keep on showing up when I turn on my computer.
I recently ran the Desktop Wizard and now all of my desktop icons are frozen. The only way I can do anything on the computer is by going through the unused icon folder. Does anyone have an advice on how to get my icons working again?
My caps lock on my keyboard works in complete reverse. with the "caps lock" on all of the letters are in small caps and when it is off all of the letters are in large caps. also my shift keys do not work. With the caps lock on the periods and commas give me "larger than" and "smaller than". the only way to get a period is to go to the "numeric keyboard. also I can"t reset the cursor when I try to go back to an earlier place it highlights the words in my folders I am unable to choose only one file When I click on a file it highlights every file from the beginning of the list to the one I have chosen.
Every shortcut that I have placed on my desktop will not open the website that it is linked to. When I click the icon, it starts to open the website, but then locks & will not open. All icons will open except the ones that I have added that link to things like fantasy football sites or game sites etc. I am running windows XP on a Dell laptop.
I have 20 icons on my desktop. Only 7 of them act up. When I left click some icons, the "search" window opens instead of the program I wish to open. When I right click these same icons, the menu box opens that gives me choices ( open, explore, send to, copy etc) as it should However, the top selection in the drop down box (highlighted) is "search" instead of "open".As a routine now, I must right click and icon, choose "open" from the drop down box, and go about my business. How did "search" get into the box to begin with, why are only some of the icons infected, how do I get rid of it.I just installed my new "anti everything" renewal for 2005 (Norton) and it saw nothing, (The Norton icon also has this problem) I've tried freeby spyware remover etc.. nothing. I deleted the infected icons, went back into explorer and created new shortcuts.
This may be somewhat esoteric but... Under my start button there is a sliver of the taskbar - either blue, silver, or olive green depending on the theme chosen. It wasn't always like this. The start button used to go all the way to the bottom of the screen without any 'line' below it. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way to make the start button fill the bottom left corner of the screen again?
I'm unable to drag and drop icons from desktop to an open window or open window to open window what happens is when i hold down the left mouse button to drag an icon from the desktop to an open window the cursor changes to a black circle with a diagonal line going through it
Whenever I try to open a folder on my desktop, I get the below error message. I have a feeling it has to do with windows explorer not working. I have Norton Antivirus, Spy sweeper (could this be the problem?), and SP2.
I have a dell lattitude d800, and my mouse pointer automatically goes to the upper left hand corner. i've plugged an external mouse and i get the same problem. i don't have any spyware - or viruses - as i've ran adaware, spybot, and microsoft antispyware. i've also ran Norton antivirus - and none of the three have detected maliciuos sw or viruses. i don't have any other problems w/the machine. i've uninstalled the default drivers, and reinstalled them.
I work for a library and all I want to do is completely disable the right mouse button in Windows XP on public access computers (but allow me to login as administrator and enable/disable it again). I figured Windows would have something like this built in, but it doesn't. I figured there would be a freeware program that could do this, but I can't find one. Some mouse drivers allow you to disable the right mouse button, but not for the mice I have. Do you know of some obscure Windows XP registry setting that would allow me to disable the right mouse button (in all contexts), or of a simple freeware utility that would allow me to do this?
I can map the right mouse click onto a keyboard button? I know that on the desktop i can use shift+F10 as an alternative but I want to map it for better gaming such as alt+D. Also the shiftF10 only work on the desktop.
Most of the time when I try to use my right mouse button ( for example, right clicking on an icon, photograph, file name) will freeze up the system and it will become un-responsive right away.If I am doing a word doc, I can right click for spell check and that works fine, or right click the start menu.I have a Dell computer running XP service pack 3 with a pent D 2.33Ghz and 1 G memory. tried renaming Normal.dotm, as someone had suggested, but it made no difference.
I downloaded some "freeware", but what I wanted was nothing but!! I uninstalled, but the icons left on the screen did not go. Seems there should be a way, but I have not had any luck.
All i want is to disable the middle-mouse button click while on firefox/internet explorer. (ie. you click your scroll wheel and a little circle with two arrows pops up and you just move your mouse around to scroll)
I had a few icons at the bottom left of screen (next to the start button)for my email and a couple of other programmes. For some reason they have disappeared, how do i get them back, I tried dragging and dropping but they just pop back to the desktop.
I use Windows XP home edition. My computer locks up every now and then, the mouse, keyboard, everything. The only way to recover it is to press the reset button. It may go for days and have no problems, then may lock up several times in one day. Than it might go for days again with no problems. It happens a lot when you are playing the windows games, but it will also do it sometimes with other programs. I have looked everywhere to try and figure it out, but I have had no luck. Do you have any ideas what might be causing this or where I can look to correct this problem?
