Desktop Icons, Start Button, Task Bar & Clock Disappear?
May 26, 2007I don't have any idea what causes my desktop icons, start button, task bar and clock to disappear but it is most annoying!!!

Feb 18, 2008My son has a Dell dimension 9100 The taskbar/start and all the desktop icons disappear and then reappear every 10-4 seconds All programs can still be accessed through start if you r quick enough!! otherwise throught the task manager. The system will not start in safe mode, only get a blue screen in safe mode, asdvising to run CHKDSK, which we have. Is the hard drive on its way out?? or does this sound repairable?

Oct 10, 2006I got a client that sent me a hp pavilion 533w, and this thing is screwed up badly. The start menu, & desktop icons don't show up at all. I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del and run everything thru Windows Task Manager. Here's another thing, he has a WINDOWS Folder on his 20gig and another one on his 50gig. Ive tried everything from Windows OS CDs to Run format, WIN CD Repair, and all I get are errors. Give me a hand.

Sep 24, 2006recently I loaded up my computer, logged inunder my user profile (I'm running Windows XP SP2), Everything looked normal until the system completed loading and my wallpaper icons vanished (Wallpaper stays), My start button & Task manager bar vanished as well(including the clock).I logged out of my profile, and was able to use the profile I had set up for my mom for about a day... but then her profile did the same thing. I tried my daughter's profile and everything is gone.When I looked in my listing of what applications are running, I've noticed that my explorer.exe is gone.
No Icons, Start Button, Task Bar--Only A Cursor & Wallpaper?
May 2, 2005The computer in question is running Windows XP Pro, SP1. It is not attached to the internet, and any documents not created on the computer are scanned on a different computer first for viruses, so HOPEFULLY that means this is not a virus. In addition, the same thing happened last year, and I did a complete re-install exactly a year ago to the day. We have WordPerfect Office 12, Lotus Organizer, and Microsoft Office XP Standard loaded. This is an IBM NetVista 6350 computer.
Logging on brings me to the screen that shows my wallpaper and the cursor. However, there are no icons, no start button, and no task bar. Right clicking does not produce anything. Control-Alt-Delete to bring up the task manager shows that explorer. exe has not loaded.I have tried starting in Safe Mode and logged in under the Administrator Account. That brings up a black screen with Safe Mode noted in the corners, but no other information, so it appears to be a problem that is not prejudiced to a certain user login.

Mar 24, 2008I came in the other morning to a computer warning: UNABLE TO WRITE TO VOLUME G and I knew it was going to be a bad day! In a nut shell:My XPSP1 machine makes it to my desktop wallpaper and then hangs. No icons or task bar or start button. Though the HD lght stays solid, it is active and may be accessed via a networked computer but XP doesn't finish loading. Safe mode is no different except I see a blank screen instead of wallpaper Though I can browse the XP CD through Task manager, nothing will run and attempts to run any file will return a NO PROGRAM ASSOCIATED error The PC will not boot from or even try to start up the XP CD. (just spins up) The six XP startup diskettes downloaded from MS hangs up here or there every time and fails to boot.

My kids were playing with the computer and now the first row of icons on the left have moved off screen (all icons have shifted left), and even the bar at the bottom with the Start button has shifted left. Jun 2, 2010The desktop in my daughter's Inspiron 6000(4 years old machine. WindowsXP home) has no icons, taskbar or start button. This began yesterday morning. No new downloads before this started. Trojan removed two months ago from the system and has been working well since.Problem seems to be common going by my search but the only solution that everyone seems to be leading to eventually is a repair re-install. Have tried reinstalling explorer.exe to no avail. I only get a one second flash of the taskbar. Any suggestions before doing the re-install? BTW, checked for new malware, the system is clean.

Jun 21, 2005Whenever I start up my computer, I can no longer see the Start button, the Taskbar or any of my Desktop icons. I have tried system restore but there were no valid restore points, and re-installing Windows from the CD has not solved the problem.Has anybody got any ideas about how to fix this? The system also seems to be running more slowly, and on some occasions it will automatically restart about 10 minutes after I have turned it on. I've run a virus update (with updated virus definitions) but it has not found anything.

Jun 22, 2005I have XP Home Edition. My problem is that when I try to log into an account (any account) I see the desktop icons, task bar, start button for a second and then suddenly they disappear and I am left with the background. I can not bring up task manager (cntrl+alt+delete) or anything else. I have tried a few things:
1. Ran spyware be gone
2. Ran adaware (got a 'cannot find shell.dll' error after doing this)
3. Tried to using selective startup and disabling startup items (when I reboot it turns it back on)
4. Tried creating a new user account --- problem still occurs.
5. Finally tried a reinstall of XP. Significant to note that during this installation I get an error related to explorer.exe.
The first time I tried to reinstall it aborted the installation. I ran a repair on the programs (from disk that came from Dell with my pc). I then tried the reinstall again....I got further this time but still when it was at the point of installing explorer it through another error and said that the program was not installed.I do not know what to do next!
Desktop Icons, Start Bar And Task Bar Will Not Show
May 1, 2005I get an error message saying that An exception occurred while trying to run " "C:WINDOWSsystem32mfyuv.dll" DllGetVersion", only the .dll file is a different one each time I reboot the system. And I can't find any of the .dll files online at all. Not only that, but when the computer is starting up internet explorer is using up all of the memory, even though I can't see anything on screen. This slows everything down and I have to turn it off using the task manager to give enough memory to the System Idle Process.

Usually I can re-start the explorer.exe in the task manager. It now flashes and then is gone again. I can't get it back. How can I get to the control panel with no start menu? I've tried an earlier restore point, restarted with last known good configuration. Nothing. I'm running windows XP Home SP2 all updates.

Jul 31, 2007My son's Compaq Presario SR1200NX running WinXP has a slight problem. When starting the comp it will get as far as the desktop wallpaper and then just stops. The mouse cursor is there and moves around but there is no taskbar, clock, start button or anything. I'd give y'all a hack file but I can't get far enough to be able to do that. I've tried ctrl-alt-del and that does nothing. I've tried running in safe mode and I still only get to that point. I've taken the HD out and connected it to my notebook and cleaned it up with an anti-virus program and anti spyware stuff. Physically, it's fine and I can run any program on it but only as an ext. HD for my laptop.

Jun 26, 2005I keep on getting an error message saying windows explorer has to close etc. that asks you if you want to send an error report.Whether you do or not, all the desktop icons disappear for a couple of seconds then reappear only for the same message to come up again.On the more information tab it suggests I download windows XP SP2 but when I try that it wont download.It does begin downloading alright but then as its about to install it just says file could not be found.I don't know if its a coincidence but this only began after I was downloading a file on Warez that stopped downloading near the end and just said the file was corrupt. After that is when this problem began.I can continue on with whatever I'm doing on the computer but I have constant error message on front of me.

Aug 12, 2005My problem is I have nothing on my desktop, no icons no tool bar. I cannot right click to get to properties. I can Control. Alt, Delete to get Task Manager and start a new process. After browsing for an application, I can get to any rogram/processor, but this is REALLY annoying. I have done a restore to 2 days ago and that didn't help. This just "happened" after the computer had been in use, screen saver turned on and then when I went to use it again, NOTHING.

I am utilizing the on-board graphics card only. When I initially built and installed the XP-Pro Operating System, the system installed and worked perfect. After approximately six (6) months of use, and while attempting to utilize IE 8, the pop-up screens would only display in white, without any information. After working on the IE 8 problem for a week, I finally decided to scrubbed the hard drive with zeros an accomplished a clean install. Same problem appeared again. I accomplished a Mem-Test on the memory without any problems.

Dec 5, 2008A Dell Dimension 8200, I can start the computer just fine in safe mode, but when I try to log in normally it lets me type in my password and then either just hangs after that saying loading personal settings or it'll get to my desktop background, but no programs will appear and it will just hang there. I've deleted any old programs I could find in safe mode and the only thing I've recently installed is a Java update. I also used system restore to go back before the Java update and I'm having the same problem.
