Wallpaper And Cursor Stop - No Taskbar - Clock - Start Button
Jul 31, 2007
My son's Compaq Presario SR1200NX running WinXP has a slight problem. When starting the comp it will get as far as the desktop wallpaper and then just stops. The mouse cursor is there and moves around but there is no taskbar, clock, start button or anything. I'd give y'all a hack file but I can't get far enough to be able to do that. I've tried ctrl-alt-del and that does nothing. I've tried running in safe mode and I still only get to that point. I've taken the HD out and connected it to my notebook and cleaned it up with an anti-virus program and anti spyware stuff. Physically, it's fine and I can run any program on it but only as an ext. HD for my laptop.
The computer in question is running Windows XP Pro, SP1. It is not attached to the internet, and any documents not created on the computer are scanned on a different computer first for viruses, so HOPEFULLY that means this is not a virus. In addition, the same thing happened last year, and I did a complete re-install exactly a year ago to the day. We have WordPerfect Office 12, Lotus Organizer, and Microsoft Office XP Standard loaded. This is an IBM NetVista 6350 computer.
Logging on brings me to the screen that shows my wallpaper and the cursor. However, there are no icons, no start button, and no task bar. Right clicking does not produce anything. Control-Alt-Delete to bring up the task manager shows that explorer. exe has not loaded.I have tried starting in Safe Mode and logged in under the Administrator Account. That brings up a black screen with Safe Mode noted in the corners, but no other information, so it appears to be a problem that is not prejudiced to a certain user login.
The desktop in my daughter's Inspiron 6000(4 years old machine. WindowsXP home) has no icons, taskbar or start button. This began yesterday morning. No new downloads before this started. Trojan removed two months ago from the system and has been working well since.Problem seems to be common going by my search but the only solution that everyone seems to be leading to eventually is a repair re-install. Have tried reinstalling explorer.exe to no avail. I only get a one second flash of the taskbar. Any suggestions before doing the re-install? BTW, checked for new malware, the system is clean.
Whenever I start up my computer, I can no longer see the Start button, the Taskbar or any of my Desktop icons. I have tried system restore but there were no valid restore points, and re-installing Windows from the CD has not solved the problem.Has anybody got any ideas about how to fix this? The system also seems to be running more slowly, and on some occasions it will automatically restart about 10 minutes after I have turned it on. I've run a virus update (with updated virus definitions) but it has not found anything.
I have XP Home Edition. My problem is that when I try to log into an account (any account) I see the desktop icons, task bar, start button for a second and then suddenly they disappear and I am left with the background. I can not bring up task manager (cntrl+alt+delete) or anything else. I have tried a few things:
1. Ran spyware be gone
2. Ran adaware (got a 'cannot find shell.dll' error after doing this)
3. Tried to using selective startup and disabling startup items (when I reboot it turns it back on)
4. Tried creating a new user account --- problem still occurs.
5. Finally tried a reinstall of XP. Significant to note that during this installation I get an error related to explorer.exe.
The first time I tried to reinstall it aborted the installation. I ran a repair on the programs (from disk that came from Dell with my pc). I then tried the reinstall again....I got further this time but still when it was at the point of installing explorer it through another error and said that the program was not installed.I do not know what to do next!
I am new to the forum and have read some of the threads related to my problem, but my problem still exists. I have run spybot and Ad-aware from in the safe mode and have removed everything that came up (Bargain Buddy could not be removed.) I have also run Housecall and removed their recommended items
No taskbar no icons just desktop wallpaper on a Dell Precision 490 running XP Pro SP2. I had a work-around when this happened, I hit ctl-alt-del, ran task manager then started explorer.exe and all would be well. At first this problem was intermittent but now it's every time I boot. Also when booting into Safe Mode. Now even running explorer.exe won't bring up taskbar or icons. I've run Symantac and found no virus.
my computer has started freezing after startup. Well, I say the computer has started freezing, but it's stranger than that. Pretty much as soon as I log into Windows, the taskbar freezes up. Mousing anywhere on the taskbar causes the cursor to turn into the hourglass. The system tray icons are frozen as well. This happens every time the computer starts up.
Desktop items are all clickable and somewhat usable, but to a limited extent. For example, I can open "My Computer" but then explorer freezes if I double-click on either hard drive. I have a videos folder on the desktop that I can open, but if I then try to play any of the videos, Windows Media Player opens with a blank white screen and never actually starts playing the video.
Yesterday I got onto my computer which was already on everything seeming fine, and I clicked on internet explorer to check my email then the window locked up or something and then my taskbar vanished. Then I closed the window out and my icons were gone. So I restarted my comp and now its just wallpaper. No icons or taskbar. Ive seen a few other posts on a problem like mine and tried a few of the fixes they said but none worked. I've tried a system restore to I beleive a week earlier, some shellfix download from ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/shellfix.reg, hitting f8 and doing a boot to when settings worked(sorry cant think of whats its actually called) and a couple other things I believe. I noticed alot of times a request for a hijackthis file is asked for so I went ahead and got that and will post. Also Im positive I have the aurora virus cuz I get all the popups that say aurora on there and I havent been able to get rid of it
I'm using Windows XP with service pack 2. Every once in a while, a taskbar button will pop up for a fraction of a second, then dissapear. This never used to happen before, just started about a week ago. The button doesn't have any text on it, and the icon is just the generic program icon, so I have no idea what is doing this. The most annoying part is that while i'm playing a game in full screen mode, when the button pops up it will make my computer display the desktop and minimize the game.
When I hover over a button on the taskbar the window is supposed to restore. Well it's not happening. Is this a setting I can change or is it messed up somehow Win XP Pro SP2
I believe its a problem with the actual start up button instead of the computer itself, ive pried the thing open, seeing the generator is on, everythings in place and there are lights on, showing there is power. any ideas?
I had to have Windows XP installed because it had gotten corrupted and now I'm having a problem with the Icons on the taskbar hiding.I made sure that the Lock The Taskbar option is checked but its still hiding icons. How do I fix this????
Turned on other computer this morning. The desktop wallpaper showed. There were no icons or taskbar. I right click on the desktop and nothing happens. I can do a ctrl+alt+del and access the task manager but have no idea on how to restore my desktop. When I startup in safe mode all I get is a black screen.
it happened was my "mcafee security center" ( anti virus software ran out ) so I un-installed it then re-installed it hoping it would work again however it never as the yearly expire date was up had to renew it but i choose not to and downloaded "avg anti virus ,avg anti spyware , spybot s&d , ad-aware "(Free software) instead i ran all scans from them scans show nothing found but i noticed looking at "cursor" the hourglass/egg-timer was flashing/blinking on and off all the time and still does to this day flash's/blinks 2-3 times every second never stops i also noticed sometimes i can not access stuff from PC say i click on a icon on desktop nothing happens doesn't open it right click on it gives options to open ectHowever they wont work , even going to start menu click something nothing will open like any program or anything u want to run however this has only happened a few times most of the time things seem to be working normal apart from the flashing hourglass next to cursor it wont stop flashing from the moment you start using PC
When I turn my laptop, after entering my password, I get a picture on my screen which appears then disappears just before the desktop screen loads up. This picture used to be my desktop picture many months ago. I have changed the desktop photo several times and this same old picture keeps showing up. I have even deleted it from my laptop. How do I get rid of it as I cant find the picture anywhere on my pc. I have tried System restore also. I am using windows XP Home edition on a Sony Vaio, Intel Pentium 4 Processor. I don't know any of the other spec's of my laptop.
I have no icons or taskbar at start up merely the wallpaper and the mouse pointer. I can get to safe mode but appear not to be able to restore even with many restore points. I would prefer not to have to re-install XP - can this be fixed if so how?
When I turn on my computer and click on "user 1" on the start up window, it takes unusually long to load, and once it does all I see is my wallpaper. No start menu, no desktop icons, nothing. I can ctrl-alt-delete and open programs by doing "run new task" and selecting them, and everything runs fine
My start button, the quick launch bar and the task bar where the clock is and where it shows what windows you have open is all gone. I was playing a game and when I exited out of it it was all missing. If the game matters it was Hidden Expedition Everest. I ran spybot and AVG antivirus. All is clean.
Can someone please tell me how fix DOS so that I can bypass the necessity of pressing the F1 button when starting Windows XP Home. I remember fixing this years ago with a 486, but I've forgotten the DOS commands.
my problem is i installed 7-zip on my pc i am using it to open rar files and its working ok.but i have noticed everytime i click the start button and the all programs menu comes up a yellow dialogue box keeps appearing with new programs installed how do i stop this appearing.
When I start the computer, after the windows XP logo I get a blue screen with border top and bottom and a small windows logo and the mouse cursor then I can do nothing but move the mouse cursor around that screen.
I have a major problem. When I regularly start Windows XP home edition. It seems to run just fine, yet the mouse is at an hourglass for a good amount of time. Then, All the icons disappear, Start Menu goes away, Cannot open task manger or run anything. Computer then stalls with DLL.exe and svchost error messages.I ran a spybot scan and adaware. Only coming up with Jupilites and Smitfraud-C.Both have been cleaned. If I can find a way to transfer my HJT file from my laptop to the computer I am currently using, will posted as soon as possible.
After booting up OK, any attempt to click on the Start button leads to a box appearing labelled RUNDLL. Within this box the letter 'r' is repeatedly and continuously printed. The box can be closed but the error recurs if the Start button is clicked again. At the same time there are intermittent 'bleeps' from the speakers, and clicking on ANY icon on the desktop opens only the recycle bin! If you try making a search with Google again the letter 'r' is repeatedly generated in the seach box.
Repeated scans with (updated) Norton Antivrus 2005 and with Ad-aware have not helped. Strangely, at some times the computer behaves completely normally.
