Computer Screen Freezes On Start Up - Can Move Mouse Cursor
Aug 9, 2009
When I start the computer, after the windows XP logo I get a blue screen with border top and bottom and a small windows logo and the mouse cursor then I can do nothing but move the mouse cursor around that screen.
I finally got my new PC but I have an issue that's bugging me. When I have been copying lots of files to my main drive or any other HD intensive operation like installing software, mp3s I'm listening to judder and the mouse cursor momentarily freezes or if im copying gigs and gigs the system slows down so much that i just cant do anything else. I am running xp pro x64 and have a mirrored raid setup using two 320 gig drives. I have 4 gigs of ram and a core2 6600. I've never had this problem on my 2 year old other pc. I'm sure there is some kind of configuration problem but ill be damned if i know what it is.
The cursor to suddenly begin to wander around the screen? Do I have an infection of some sort. I have Norton system works protecting my machine supposedly. I also am running road runner which means my machine is on line continuously. This is driving me crazy and is becoming a pain in the bottom in view of the fact that I am an online professor with several courses currently underway.
I have a ibm think pad with windows xp on. It will boot upto the windows xp loading screen with the loading bar and then when it should move onto the log on screen it brings up a blank page with a small mouse cursor. When i boot it up in safe mode it comes up with a bigger mouse cursor. I have tried pressing control alt delete and buttons like space bar to see if they work but still nothing.
So yesterday my computer suddenly started getting slow, so I rebooted. When the machine boots, it's all fine, but just after the Windows loading screen, the screen goes black, and the only thing that's active is the mouse cursos which I can move. But I can't right click or anything etc.I can't bring up the Task Manager. I try loading in safe mode but it's still all black, with the expection that the text "Safe mode" is written around the black screen. So what I did was I got a Ultimate Boot CD and loaded from it. I managed to roll back my windows registry to 2003 (manufactor fresh), and now windows actually loaded and I didn't get the black screen anymore, however obviously it was all a complete mess having a registry from so long ago, so I backup rolled it back to the current again, and the black screen returned.
With that logic, shouldn't it be possible to do some tweaks to the registry to solve this issue? I'm a complete beginner and I barely even know the function of the registry. Everything i've tried so far i've just managed to google and follow step by step instructions, so bare with me. But judging from the tools in the Ultimate Boot CD, I can access the windows registry. So basically, where do I take it from here?
I got a new computer and I have been having problems with my mouse. I have a simple optical wired mouse. During random times, my mouse click freezes, although my mouse can move and I can use the key board at this time, I cannot click or focus anything. To fix the problem I can control alt delete and exit the Task Manager, this fixes the problem.
My computer freezes up. No keyboard, mouse, ect. The mouse arrow disappears. I have to "power off" the computer to get things working. Now here is the strange thing, if i move the mouse around "quickly" the computer will work OK. This is on a new install of Windows XP + sp1. If I am moving the mouse slowing as in solitare the system will lock up in about 10 mn
Is there is a way to start xp in safe mode without the use of the arrow keys and enter key as his keyboard freezes up after the F8 key is used to get to the safe mode screen.
im running XP. for some reason lately, i've noticed since my family changed ISP's, that my computer temporarily freezes. Like I'd be running 2 IE's, and I'm switching to the other browser, when the screen freezes - but I can move the mouse. It freezes for around a minute to a few minutes, but I can move the mouse. I go to click on eg the Start button, go back to the browser i was originally on, etc. Only after the screen temporarily freezes does the start menu come up at around the same time the browsers switch from one to another. how do i fix this? it's REALLY annoying. it doesn't only happen on my computer, but on my parents' computer as well. the funny thing is that it doesnt happen to my bros computer.
I've got Windows XP Pro, SP2. Say your mouse quit working. Isn't there a way to move around and select stuff with the keyboard? I've looked in "Help" but I must not have known how to phrase it because I could find nothing. Could somebody please tell me where to look?
Couple new things. I've been using win98 for the past 7 years, but now have 2 new items a mouse with a scroll wheel and win xp pro. I've dug thru just about everything I could find to see if I could get this mouse to respond when I move it. But so far nothing. It sits there I'm guessing just to make sure the mouse actually moved for justthe annoyance factor length of time. then it jerks and catches up. Other than this nothing wrong with the mouse. How do I get it to move when I move ?
A friend of mine has a year old computer 2.4ghz running XP Pro.Recently the computer had gotten slower and slower and had lots of Popups. Sypbot found 127 bogus things going on.It could not clear all of them.We went into control panel and removed programs and took out a bunch of things that were not operating related programs.Computer was rebooted multiple times. Finally the computer just hangs when it gets to the blue XP screen, and will sit there for hours until rebooted.I have tried ever mode of Safe Mode to boot and I get the same blue XP screen. The mouse can still be moved around.I cannot boot from the CD rom with the XP disks and do not have bootable floppies. I cannot get into the setup screen to change the order of boot.Since this computer was a gift to the person, we do not know the administrator password.
All of a sudden my mouse and cursor seem to be working against each other. When I use mouse to point cursor at something the cursor remains in place. I have to keep moving mouse up and down and around in circles until cursor finally locks on and I can then point it to where I want to go. Needless to say this is really frustrating.
I have a Dell Inspiron 4100 laptop with Windows XP Operating System. Recently, the mouse begins to move on its own without me touching anything usually the left bottom corner but it could be other directions as well. When I use the touchpad, the mouse moves but I am competing with something stronger pulling it to one side so I have trouble controlling the mouse in general. Since the Inspiron has two types of laptop mouses (the touchpad and ball), I have to use them both in tandem to actually move the mouse
Where is the control for the setting that makes the desktop resume with one move of the mouse? Mine seems to have changed itself from one move of the mouse, to two moves of the mouse, to bring the desktop back up. I don't remember doing anything at the time, or ever really, like software installs, sys restores, etc., that would account.
I'm using XP Pro. I'd like to prevent my system from resuming from Standby mode every time the mouse gets nudged (which, on my crowded desk, is often). How can I do this? I've read in a few places that you can set the "wake up" option for the mouse, but I've never been able to find this setting.
When I turn my computer on it goes to the blue hp logo and then to a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. If I hit f8 when booting it gives me 2 options...f1 to setup and f2 to resume. It won't let me go into safe mode or anything. I have tried booting from the xp cd, but nothing happens. I have tried replacing the battery and that hasn't done anything. It started when trying to open a program, the computer just went blank. When trying to reboot, this mess started. Also, I just got this error message, which is new.i got it after I unplugged the computer for awhile.. warning 251: system cmos checksum bad dafalut config used
I have an old IBM Thinkpad R51 (loaded with Windows XP) which kept going through the boot up sequence without coming up all the way. I had got it back to the factory default setting and now it is booting all the way to the desktop screen. But I have a new problem: the cursor (laptop mouse pad) is frozen. I was able to move it around as it was booting up but once it boots up to the desktop screen the cursor is stuck in the middle of the screen. I would load the XP service pack but because of the cursor I can't.
I am using XP. When I try to start my home computer, the main screen freezes and I can't do anything. On several tries the install screen came up, but not every time. The hour glass comes up and just stays there. Control/Alt/Delete doesn't do anything. I have to manually turn off the computer. I started it in the safe mode and ran Norton and anti spyware programs. They detected nothing. I can't go on AOL or explorer, even in the safe mode. I have a firewall and anti virus is up to date.
Just bought my grandson a Dell ( DPH).GX280+ 15" monitor from a co. This a reconditioned unit(suppose)? CPU fan sounds akin to a euro fighter on take off,but the main problem is that the on screen message on the monitor is "power save- press any key or move the mouse "Problem is the usb ports are not supplying power to mice or keyboards .(Tried a few) The monitor is ok.as tried it on this comp.Anybody any ideas or is it just a duff buy?
I have been using my Wacom tablet mouse for quite sometime & beginning to feel agitated. I can be typing & then suddenly the cursor will move to another are that I've typed. Which breaks up my sentence & I have to always proof read & undo what has been typed. I'd sure appreciate some feedback on this. Could my computer be hacked as I'm also using wifi {not my router like I normally do} & I've noticed that lately I have alot of users connected to my connection? I'm confused?
OK, I don't know *what's* going on, I'm just hoping it isn't a virus. Whenever I'm typing, be it an email, posting on a board like this etc, my cursor will suddenly jump back up a few lines or even way back up into the subject title field. It's very annoying, as I've got to constantly mouse to where I belong to fix typing over previous sentences.
I've spent the last two months just trying to get Windows to operate correctly on a new Mac. Unbelievable! I've re-installed XP SP2 too many times to count, finally had it up and thought it was running fine for the last week, then I went over to the Mac OS tried accessing windows through boot camp, it shut down the Mac OS, then when I tried to go back to boot Windows directly, I received the damning <windows root> system32hal.dll file is missing or corrupt - again.
When I use the right mouse button, the menu that should appear doesn't. It is invisible until I scroll the mouse cursor over where it should be. I changed the appearance from XP to Classic and back. That changed the drop down menus back. They were doing the same thing.
Recently I've noticed that there are strange tasks when I control/alt/delete to see what is eating up my virtual memory. The task list will contain TWO Iexplore tasks, whatever those are. NOW I have this lag that occurs every 5-8 seconds like I have some massive drain on my system resources. It literally freezes my cursor for a second or so every 5-8 seconds.
the computer freezes at start-up on the blue screen that shows the Windows XP logo, and the words "Windows is starting up". I found that I can navigate through this at startup by tapping the F8 key rapidly before that screen appears. I tried the System Restore to a date earlier than the administrator's work, but no help. Is their a repair or restore procedure that will cure this problem?
I have a Great Quality ZX-3310 laptop. It recently froze up and would not reboot. I unplugged the machine and plugged it back in to restart and now I get either the windows start up page that freezez before it is loaded or I get this message: "RS482M- Test Bios BR#13207A". Sometimes I get nothing on the screen but I can hear the fan run. It will not let me start in Safe Mode. The DVD drive recognizes a DVD it there but it immediately freezes on start up.
Im running XP Home on an AMD Athlon 1700 with a GeForce 2 vid card and (1) GB of PC2100 RAM. In the last 6 months, the cursor started to freeze (not respond to mouse movement) and I had no keyboard or mouse control over XP. I have to hard reboot to regain control of the mouse and keyboard in XP. In addition, any downloads from the web stop as well.In short, the entire XP becomes inaccessible.I use Zone Alarm for my DSL connection and it too STOPS and shows no activity . Ive upgraded and downgraded the video driver several times, Ive reformmated and reinstalled XP several times
Im using windows xp and my computer automatically restarts at the user select screen(im booting from my windows xp cd right now). and my computer freezes when i play games and when i use my start menu. i use Norton anti virus and it doesn't find anything.
i started a clean install of xp sp3 from a genuine disc, but after formatting the partition and copying files and restarting, the screen gets stuck and all i get is the cursor blinking furiously. I then tried to install some not-so-genuine copies, but no matter what i use, its the same problem. I tried installing linux and it went fine.
