My clock "taskbar" has started to run faster than it should {mins per day}
My son's Compaq Presario SR1200NX running WinXP has a slight problem. When starting the comp it will get as far as the desktop wallpaper and then just stops. The mouse cursor is there and moves around but there is no taskbar, clock, start button or anything. I'd give y'all a hack file but I can't get far enough to be able to do that. I've tried ctrl-alt-del and that does nothing. I've tried running in safe mode and I still only get to that point. I've taken the HD out and connected it to my notebook and cleaned it up with an anti-virus program and anti spyware stuff. Physically, it's fine and I can run any program on it but only as an ext. HD for my laptop.

I have a regular PC for work, and my programs are NOT memory hungry.. and i have 2 gigs of RAM on this
My OS is Windows XP Service Pack 2 and my CPU is 3.2 gig, a memory of 1 gig ddr. I'm trying to look for a software to boot my PC faster. I've tried Microsoft Bootvis but didn't improve the the cold booting and rebooting. Anybody knows what's the best way to improve the performance of my machine.
View 8 Replies View RelatedWith XP Pro SP2, I enable "Group similar taskbar buttons". I generally have my taskbar stretched 2 to 3 rows even so. Sometimes, when I have a lot of windows open, and the similar taskbar buttons group and stack themselves, so 1 button contains 2 or 3 open tasks, I can't get any action out of the buttons that represent multiple open tasks.
Any of the taskbar buttons that represent a single open task are fine. But any buttons that represent multiple open tasks don't respond. I have to do Alt -
Tab to bring a task to the front, if it's one of the tasks on a button that represents a group. Or I can go to Taskbar Properties, and deselect "Group similar taskbar buttons".
I've just switched from 98 to XP. I find now that the window designations in the taskbar for my *browser windows only* are severely and unaccountably truncated. My browser is IE6. Even if there's only one window open, if it's a browser window, only one letter will display. Other windows will properly display the full name. I've turned taskbar grouping on and off with no change. I've also run the SFC utility, with no change. There is no such problem in my Win98 machine, and my security settings (and all other settings) are the same. I don't wish to upgrade to IE7.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to see all task bar buttons and not have them grouped. XP Taskbar menu offers check "Group similar taskbar buttons." I leave this unchecked, then Apply, then OK. XP still groups the similar buttons (e.g., Word doc1, Word doc2, etc.) instead of having these ungrouped.

Right-clicking the taskbar even in the program is uncool.The catch is, I can execute any CP dialog EXCEPT this one as a command line, either passing a dialog parameter to Control.exe or else using a *.cpl file name with Control.exe or directly. But I can't find "Taskbar and Start Menu".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI currently use a UK dial up connection with Connectfree to access the internet; generally without any problems. There now appear to be a number of "faster dial up" applications available (all at a cost of course) that claim to enhance speeds on average by a factor of X5. For example - Onspeed in the UK. Does anyone have any experience of any of these applications or know of any similar applications that are free. At the end of the day, I assume it is only a packet compression tool?

Well i was amazed at how much faster it boot into windows than my new PC. It does about 3-4 bar moves (the green bar moves front to back 3-4 times) and then bam, into the log in screen/ desktop.It takes my new PC about 8 bar passes to boot into windows.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had a random thought. and I can't find much information on the idea. What happens if I make my XP partition 40 gigs so I had room for programs, but then, for something like Oblivion, Id partition 8-10 gigs strictly for the game. Then Sims 2 id do like, 10 gigs strictly for sims 2. So...would that make the games run faster cause theres only a small area to search, or, is it a waste of time?
View 11 Replies View RelatedSeems like this would be a common question, but I didn't find it anywhere. Feel free to refer me to an appropriate post if there is one.My old laptop bit the dust, and I've got a loaner. It's very low on memory and everything is just really slow. The obvious solution is to add more memory but I won't be able to do that for awhile. In the meantime, is there anything I can do to increase this computer's performance? I searched online and found a lot of hype about disabling services, but upon further research it seems like that won't actually help, with the possible exception of turning off Themes or indexing.I don't run anything fancy on this computer, mostly Firefox, Thunderbird, that sort of thing. It's an Hp Pavillion ze5600 running Windows XP.Keep in mind that I know more about computers than the average office worker, but only slightly. I appreciate any suggestions you have. I have done things like disk cleanup, defrag, virus and spyware scans, and getting unnecessary programs out of the startup, but that is about the extent of my knowledge.

an answer to my particular problem.I just bought a USB 2.0 PCI card and installed it. But I'm not getting any difference in transfer speed when downloading mp3 files to my mp3 player. My mp3 player used to provide a pop up message when I
connected it to my PC saying that it could transfer faster, but it no
longer does that despite my transfer rates still being the same.I've checked the device manager, and I do get something appearing stating I have a "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" so I'm assuming that I do have the USB 2 installed.

I use disk cleanup and defrag often, as well as a free registry cleaner every now and again (which seems to pick up the same problems every time, i think mostly because error files are with programs that came preinstalled on my computer that are long gone, if anyone knows how to get rid of those let me know). View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Dimension 9100 with 3GHz Pentium 512MB ram, running windows XP. It was top-of-the-line when I bought it, but is now about 4 years old. Over time, the machine has been running slower and slower, especially since I run Apple's itunes, and firefox, which I assume are resource hogs from looking at the Task Manager's processes tab. Lately, it has taken forever for the machine to load windows, or wake up from sleep. Nothing dramatic or noticeable that I could point to, just a gradual slowing down. I always attributed it to an aging computer and lack of memory. So this week, I purchased 2 GB of additional RAM. I've correctly installed it and confirmed, from MyComputer System Properties, that I now have 2.5 GB of RAM installed. I was expecting a big change in speed, but there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference. I have Symantec FireWall and AntiVirus running, ( it was original to the system) and am afraid to remove it.About a year ago, under advice of an IT friend, I also installed AVG and Spybot Search&Destroy.
