Start Button And Taskbar Missing / Unable To Recover Back?
Dec 28, 2004
I am new to the forum and have read some of the threads related to my problem, but my problem still exists. I have run spybot and Ad-aware from in the safe mode and have removed everything that came up (Bargain Buddy could not be removed.) I have also run Housecall and removed their recommended items
Whenever I start up my computer, I can no longer see the Start button, the Taskbar or any of my Desktop icons. I have tried system restore but there were no valid restore points, and re-installing Windows from the CD has not solved the problem.Has anybody got any ideas about how to fix this? The system also seems to be running more slowly, and on some occasions it will automatically restart about 10 minutes after I have turned it on. I've run a virus update (with updated virus definitions) but it has not found anything.
I've been reading other members' problems with missing control panels and settings. I have a similar problem. I can't access my time and setting. I have no control panel. Each time I click on the time I receive this message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. I'm the admin. and I can't access anything. I tried clicking properties, start menu, advance, but there is no control panel.
I have win xp home edition installed on my laptop. Last week i used a software called Cleanse Uninstaller. It did something to my registry that now when i boot my computer i don't see any desktop icons on the desktop. All i see is the green windows background with the logo win xp home edition. i tried to get into the system restore by going thru the CTL + ALT+ Del then go in New Task and run to pop up the system restore point window. when i do that I get the system restore point window but the window is blank. No text no calender ( the usual restore point screen) to restore it to an earlier point. What do i do now.
Hello everyone. I am currently using Windows XP SP2 on a Thinkpad T43 laptop. My main partition which houses windows xp is 34 GB total size. When I highlight the C: drive in "My Computer", it tells me that I have 10GB of free space (therefore I'm using 24GB). When, however, I double click on C: and go into that folder, select all (and yes, I have enabled viewing hidden files/folders), right-click and choose properties, I am then told that C: only contains 15GB of files/folders. Where is this missing 5GB?
The desktop in my daughter's Inspiron 6000(4 years old machine. WindowsXP home) has no icons, taskbar or start button. This began yesterday morning. No new downloads before this started. Trojan removed two months ago from the system and has been working well since.Problem seems to be common going by my search but the only solution that everyone seems to be leading to eventually is a repair re-install. Have tried reinstalling explorer.exe to no avail. I only get a one second flash of the taskbar. Any suggestions before doing the re-install? BTW, checked for new malware, the system is clean.
I have XP Home Edition. My problem is that when I try to log into an account (any account) I see the desktop icons, task bar, start button for a second and then suddenly they disappear and I am left with the background. I can not bring up task manager (cntrl+alt+delete) or anything else. I have tried a few things:
1. Ran spyware be gone
2. Ran adaware (got a 'cannot find shell.dll' error after doing this)
3. Tried to using selective startup and disabling startup items (when I reboot it turns it back on)
4. Tried creating a new user account --- problem still occurs.
5. Finally tried a reinstall of XP. Significant to note that during this installation I get an error related to explorer.exe.
The first time I tried to reinstall it aborted the installation. I ran a repair on the programs (from disk that came from Dell with my pc). I then tried the reinstall again....I got further this time but still when it was at the point of installing explorer it through another error and said that the program was not installed.I do not know what to do next!
My son's Compaq Presario SR1200NX running WinXP has a slight problem. When starting the comp it will get as far as the desktop wallpaper and then just stops. The mouse cursor is there and moves around but there is no taskbar, clock, start button or anything. I'd give y'all a hack file but I can't get far enough to be able to do that. I've tried ctrl-alt-del and that does nothing. I've tried running in safe mode and I still only get to that point. I've taken the HD out and connected it to my notebook and cleaned it up with an anti-virus program and anti spyware stuff. Physically, it's fine and I can run any program on it but only as an ext. HD for my laptop.
I turn on my computer today and everything loads up. I click on fire fox to do my usual morning surfing and then I realize I have to check my outlook express. I minimize the firefox and it DISAPEARS! Not reduced to the task bar thing, becuase it (Along with the Start Button) are gone! How do I get them back!
I'm no pro regarding computerstuff what so ever, but I know my ways aroudn at least. But the other day I got a whole bunch of abd viruses I think..from where I have no clue. I run Nod32 and it probably missed this ones. So anyway, I noticed I had some kind bad stuff called Vundo trojan. is that correct? So, I managed to remove (I think) that with Spyware doctor.BUT, the problems I had stared before i removed it. I have one account, my own, with admin. rights. BUT the "Shut off" button is missing in my startmenu and I cant start the Windows Task manager, because it has ben blocked by the..administrator? BUT, thats me? So, how can this be?It's really annoying and I have noo clue what so ever on what to do here. I tried to create a new account, and that worked fine. But that would mean alot of extra work with mailprograms and stuff.
was cleaning up PC, ran spybot/virus scan then turned my attention to the hard drive. When I ran Error Checking though, it took MUCH longer than normal and when I rebooted the taskbar was missing and IE would no longer start. This is XP Prof SP2 btw. I checked the obvious taskbar settings, tried restarting explorer.exe via task manager, ran sfc, undid the changes made by spybot and still nothing. I also tried to system restore, but it wont let me load it, saying "system restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer and try system restore again."
I was cleaning up my brothers labtop, ran spybot/virus scan then turned my attention to the hard drive. very routine, but when i ran error checking it had a lot to work with (took much longer than normal) and when it finished I booted back up to find the taskbar missing and IE no longer working. Ive tried restarting explorer.exe via task manager, did a sfc, and reversed the changes made by spybot. System restore gives me an error when I try to start it, saying it cannot help my system.
I've recently had some corruption to my c: drive as a result of resizing using Partion Magic 7. I managed to run chkdsk via Recover Console and was then able to boot. But now the Task Bar does not show. Also it thinks there is new hardware. I can run some application via the icon on the Desktop but not others. Does any one know of a way to resolve this? Am I running XP sp2.
I just installed Win XP on a freshly formatted C: drive of an IBM HDD using a slipstreamed XP disk.It appeared to install normally, loaded all the required drivers and configured without problems. But when booted and rebooted several times it shows a desktop with the standard background, BUT NO TASKBAR nor START BUTTON. The computer is ok because it loads XP normally from the slave drive. When I run the Task Manager it shows the startup files, explorer.exe and normal processes, but will not respond to the shutdown option.Since I can't access "Run", I can't run "Regedit" or any of the suggestions made to others.
I was wondering if someone knew how I can get my back button back. when I get into a site. it wont let me hit the back button at the top of the screen.
You helped me fix my work PC today and one of my coworkers asked me to post this for him regarding his home PC.He has Win2000 and lost all his desktop icons, start menu and task bar. He has to do a ctrl-alt-delete to do anything. All of the previous fixes here appear to be for XP machines.
So my sister gets hold of a computer in the house and ruins it, and here is the dilemma I am facing: I turn on the computer and right away i come to this message.... Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windowssystem32configSYSTEM Attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts. I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.
I know it was here at my last login, but Disk Cleanup is no longer listed in Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools, and the shortcut that I had placed on my Desktop is gone as well. This is the second PC on my in-home network, running XP Home edition, that this has happened to within the last 9 months - I have Norton Internet Security (all current and up to date) on all three boxes - anybody know what 's going on?
I use Windows XP home edition. My computer locks up every now and then, the mouse, keyboard, everything. The only way to recover it is to press the reset button. It may go for days and have no problems, then may lock up several times in one day. Than it might go for days again with no problems. It happens a lot when you are playing the windows games, but it will also do it sometimes with other programs. I have looked everywhere to try and figure it out, but I have had no luck. Do you have any ideas what might be causing this or where I can look to correct this problem?
I'm using Windows XP with service pack 2. Every once in a while, a taskbar button will pop up for a fraction of a second, then dissapear. This never used to happen before, just started about a week ago. The button doesn't have any text on it, and the icon is just the generic program icon, so I have no idea what is doing this. The most annoying part is that while i'm playing a game in full screen mode, when the button pops up it will make my computer display the desktop and minimize the game.
When I hover over a button on the taskbar the window is supposed to restore. Well it's not happening. Is this a setting I can change or is it messed up somehow Win XP Pro SP2
I was unable to start Windows XP and was in a sort of start-up loop. I reinstalled Windows and I have had to start again from scratch. Everything seems to be working OK but when I start up each day I get messages to say that certain files have been lost due to a hardware or network failure and to save these files elsewhere.
After loading an updated version of QuickBooks today, I attempted to restart my computer and received this error message: Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEMS32CONFIGSYSTEM. Attempted "typical recovery methods", then inserted Reinstallation CD for Windows XP Professional (SP2) that came with DELL computer (pre-installed). Followed steps to "Welcome to Setup" blue screen. Pressed r to repair. Followed steps to chkdsk /r command. Process began. After process reached 38%, there was no more activity---for almost 1.5 hours. Seemed frozen. Turned off computer. Tried, unsucessfully, to follow Microsoft instructions found online. At the Recovery Console command prompt, created 'md tmp', then attempted to "copy c:", etc. Each time I entered a "copy c:" line, I was given the message: "Cannot copy...". Not sure if this is happening because I have a DELL disk, rather than original Windows XP disk?If so, any way around this?
Task scheduler does not appear in the services list. I am logged in under the administrator account and am using Windows XP Professional. Every time I try to start the task scheduler in control panel -> scheduled tasks it says 'Unable to start'. When I try to view the properties of a scheduled task I get error: 0x80041315 (This is a picture of the error. I reinstalled Windows Internet Explorer 7 but it still does not appear in the services list. I also used System file checker but it didn't fix it either. I do not have Task Scheduler listed in the services list. I really don't want to reinstall windows xp...is there some way I can get the Task Scheduler working again? (Also I've selected the Notify of missed tasks option but that doesn't seem to work either)
left & right buttons work fine, but i cannot get the back & forward buttons to work. I re-install the 5.2 intellimouse software, but still have the same problem.
WINDOWSSystem32smss.exe and C:WINDOWSsystem32winlogon.exe were accidently deleted. How can I get them back. My system retore was turned off so no chance going there if this was any possibility.
