Whenever I try to open a folder on my desktop, I get the below error message. I have a feeling it has to do with windows explorer not working. I have Norton Antivirus, Spy sweeper (could this be the problem?), and SP2.

So i downloaded the IE7 install package on my other computer and burned to disk to install. everything was going along fine, and when prompted to restart to finsih the installation i did so..... that is when "it" hit the fan.

Problem is I cannot open Windows Explorer from desktop or any other location, from either drive. I get a message that says it "generates errors." And that it is keeping a log, presumably for use on some Day of Judgment. (I get around it for now by right-clicking My Computer and picking Explore from the pop-up menu.)I have gone to the usual download sites in search of WE, no dice.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have tested it on more then 5 computers with Windows XP Professional on it, with different applications on it. I got every time the same result. What I do: I select 2 or more files in the explorer by holding the CTRL or shift key. These files are all from the same type. Then do a right mouse click and select "Open With" What I get: I get at first for the first selected file a folder selection window with the headline MOVE. I cancel this action, then I get a 2nd folder selection window now with the headline COPY. I cancel this window again. Then I get the Program Selection Window I expect. I select for example Paint Shop Pro. Any other program has the same outcome. The program will start like expected. But now I must handle this procedure for any file I have previous selected inside the explorer. And the program will start again and
again.
While trying to change the global icon for folders, I seem to have changed whatever the folder opens with. Now when I open a folder in explorer, it opens a new explorer window instead of just doing it in that one. http://pi.monkeh.net/ explorer_ problem.avi. View 14 Replies View RelatedI made the change below however, if I click on a folder in the left hand "Folders" pane, it works as before and opens the folder and displayed in the contents in the right hand pane.
However, if I click on any folders in the right hand (files pane) a new windows explorer window opens a displays the "my documents".
The same thing happens if you click on a shortcut to a folder. Instead of the folder opening, it opens a new window and displays "my documents".
This problems started when I added a new function to the folder file folder file type properties to print out the contents of a folder by calling a batch file that piped the content to a file.
In the file association for file folders in the advanced section I now have three functions
- the afore mentioned 'create file list'
- explore (the default), and
- find
For the folder file type I just have:
- explore and
- open
Any suggestions on how to put things back to the way Windows Explorer always worked before make clicking folders in the right hand pane open them up properly in the same window as per clicking them on the left hand pane?
The left hand mouse button will not work on the desktop icons,nothing will open unless I use the right and open button. I'm running Win XP hope SP2. I have tried all the usual mouse settings that came with windows and the software for the mouse. The mouse I am using is wireless but I have also tried others with the same result

It will run programs, run shortcuts to anything but folders and the real problem is that it wont open a signal folder either by explore or open commands. I've reinstalled WINXP off the CD as update, nothing happened. I've ran the steps listed in the last forum. Nothing has worked. I'm desperate. I'm running WinXP Professional on a basically 7 month old Dell comp with 512RAM and a 2.4 GhZ Pentium in it. I'm lost at what to do.

Its strange how it happens only on my particular desktop and it doesnt happen when I access my profile on a different Personal Computer office. As soon as it freezes. Then it would nt work even if I log out and log in into my pc.

We are sorry for the inconvenience." My Pictures cannot also be used with any other application,eg.setting up Avatars or when creating a DVD title menu(as in using a background display picture). Since I use ZoneAlarm whenever i open the my pictures folder a program alert appears saying windows explorer is trying to communicate with vsmon.exe...on clicking deny the explorer error pops up. I tried copying the pictures in the folder to an empty hard drive partition but instead the hard drive partition stopped working...i.e. the same explorer error popped up,making the partition inaccessible.
I then had to format the partition.
I have a new Dell computer with windows xp operating system. My old computer was a gateway with windows xp also. The mother board on the gateway crashed and I could not find a replacement thus I purchased the new dell. I extracted the hard drive from the gateway and installed in an external drive case. All works well and I am able to retreve data from the gate way hard drive with one exception. While the hard drive was installed in the gateway I elected to make some of the folders private, ie right click on folder, click on sharing and security and clicking on private. This worked fine in the gateway but when I installed in external hard drive I am getting an "access denied" error message when trying to open with the Dell.

Why can't I get XP to open every folder using the "Details" option? I do have it set so that it remembers (most of the time) to re-open that folder with the file view it was in when it was closed, but I want XP to open every new and old folder with the "file details" view. Seems like a simple thing, but I can't get XP to understand that's what I want.

View 18 Replies View RelatedWhen my computer was turned on this morning the desktop shortcuts on my desktop will not open any programs. Non shortcuts such as my computer or outlook express open normally. I have recreated all shortcuts and the new shortcuts still won't open. I have tried the obvious of restarting the computer and I have run my antivirus programs (symantec,spy bot and adaware) w/o anything being found. View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows XP Professional. My folder views options ("Details, "Icons," etc.) do not seem to be working. When I right click on the My Computer icon on my desktop and choose Explore, I would like to see a "Details" list of my folders and files in that window, for example in my C: drive. In contrast, I have some folders on my desktop and would like to see the files in those folders represented by "Icons." It was working this way unitl a few days ago when all folders (Explore and folders on desktop) seem to revert to the last choice I make with My Computer>View - then choosing "Icons" or "Details " To try to correct this problem, I then went to My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View Tab and changed various settings, such as "Reset all folders" and "Apply to All Folders" with the, "Remember each folder's view settings" box checked. Nothing seemed to work.
The "Remember each folder's view settings," box currently is checked. Still, if I set one of the folders views on my dekstop to "Icons," then go to "Explore" and set the view in that window to "Details," then the folder on my desktop has its view changed to "Details." It's as though the "Remember each folder's viww settings" is not working and the view for all folders (for folders on the desktop and in My computer) reverts to the last view setting I used. How can I get the folders on my dekstop to show iocns when I open it, while having the folders in my "Explore" window show "Details," when I open it, given the "Remember each folder's view settings," does not seem to be working?
I have a file with a non-windows extension (.LUP to be precise) which doesn't have an associated Windows-specific program. I have got a program called HexEdit (simple Hex and ASCII editor) which I didn't install (since it came from a colleague in a folder with just the .exe and files needed to run the program) and so Windows didn't populate the "Open With" programs menu with the program. When I try to add it (by Browsing for the .exe in the "Open With" menu) I click on the .exe, and click "OK" yet it doesn't get added to the list. I then tried to add the shortcut to the program to this list, but then I get the error message "[This program] is not a valid Win32 application". I've added the shortcut to the Programs folder in the Start Menu, yet still to no avail.So my 2 questions are: 1) How can I get rid of the shortcut which has now appeared in the "Open With" programs menu? and 2) Is there a way to get this .exe file to appear in this list (possibly by some Registry hack) without installing any 3rd-party programs (since IT at the company I work at gets really shirty about that sort of thing)?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI uninstalled some preloaded Windows programs, I reinstalled some of them, but now my laptop's all funny. When I connect to The Internet, any program that I open freezes for like 10 minutes, after which it unfreezes. During this time I normally restart my computer, with no success. If I open Windows Live Messenger and Internet Explorer 7 together it freezes normally. Pinball, WordPad, Sound Recorder, and Volume Control cannot be restored. Also, I tried using my Toshiba Recovery DVD, with no success. It says Loading RAMDISK Image, then it reboots and loads the exact same system with no changes made.
View 1 Replies View RelatedEver since I loaded MS-IE-8, I have found that '2' copies of IE open in Task Manager... I run a DELL-D800 (yes 7yrs old) w/ XP-sp3 and 1Gig RAM. With IE open twice - it is using upto .8Gig of RAM (not acceptable). Today (2010/04/02)I tried Google Chrome instead of IE - the first time it opened with only one copy in TskMgr - the second time it too now has 2 copies open... It went from blazing fast to as slow or slower than IE... And all the problems with IE are now returning with Chrome... What is causing this? Virus? Bug? Normal process?
