when i download a file and then try to open it. i get an error that the specified file has encountered a problem and needs to close. if i cut and past the file to a location outside the folder i can then run the program.

When I search for these files using the Windows search tool, I can find them, but I don't know how to (a) open the "Recent" folder or (b) re-route it so they actually download to the desktop.

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy operating system is Window 2000.Last Friday my laptop was infected with UnSpyPC, a Quicklink toolbar and 6 large icons.Thanks to HiJackThis and Spyware removal programs etc I think I have gotten rid of the problematic crap. However now I seem to have ended up with a few corrupt Folders/Files.Whenever I try to run a Norton Antivirus scan or any number of Spyware removal programs such as Spybot, Spysweeper, Ewido, Ad-Aware etc they all get stuck or crash on one particular general data Folder. Explorer.exe also crashes and generally freezes the whole system when trying to access or search this folder

It doesnt happen in any other folders. I have searched the web but no one seems to have the same problem
For some reason, windows explorer has started locking up when I open a folder with many video clips in it (pretty much any folder with more than 50).I have a feeling that this is a codec problem, but I've installed pretty much every codec I can find and I'm still getting the problem.

I am currently using the target, "%SystemRoot%explorer.exe /n, /e, C:Program FilesAgent" which expands Program Files only to the extent that Agent is highlighted and expanded. How can I get it to open with all program files visible in the left pane? I must need another switch but don't know what it is or where to put it in the sequence.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe registry on one of my computers is corrupt and if I try to copy the files from the WindowsRepair folder using the windows system repair tool, I'm told the files cannot be found. One possible solution I thought of is using the registry files from my other computer running Windows XP. I don't even know if this is possible, but if it is, how can I transfer the files. I would put them on a CD but the CD drive won't open when the system repair tool is running, and they're too big to fit on a floppy disk, even one at a time (the system and software files are both over 2mb.)

View 2 Replies View RelatedSometime over the past couple of weeks, I started having a number of files on my C:/ drive which would not open. I wrote another forum and got some advice, and did some studying, and for some I was able to take back permissions and found what looked like a phony user account hidden way down in Documents and Settings.
Today I found close to 2/3 of my files would not display, of the types, htm and html, jpg, png, and doc files. I went to check permissions and the security tab was not under Properties.
I have tried everything: I have re-installed Windows, I have run every virus and adware and spyware scan and repair known, and have constantly cleaned the registry and used HiJack this which did show two programs called Voodoo and Banshee which were not mine.
For some reason, when tried to open a PDF file over the internet, it shows the downloading and then when it's done, it's just a white screen. I tried going back but it's still the same thing. So I went to my desktop and clicked on some other older PDF file I had and I don't get know error message or anything, it doesn't open.

When I try to unzip a zip file winzip reports an error. I have ran ScanDisk on my hard drive and there are no errors, I have also swaped out my IDE cable and that didnt help. I also installed a new network card and different Ram, I still get the same errors on almost all my downloads.

Now when I open a folder in explorer, it opens a new explorer window instead of just doing it in that one. http://pi.monkeh.net/ explorer_ problem.avi. This is a short video clip demonstrating my problem, since visuals work better than text. I tried reverting whatever I did through Folder Options > File types, but no disc.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI made the change below however, if I click on a folder in the left hand "Folders" pane, it works as before and opens the folder and displayed in the contents in the right hand pane.
However, if I click on any folders in the right hand (files pane) a new windows explorer window opens a displays the "my documents".
The same thing happens if you click on a shortcut to a folder. Instead of the folder opening, it opens a new window and displays "my documents".
This problems started when I added a new function to the folder file folder file type properties to print out the contents of a folder by calling a batch file that piped the content to a file.
In the file association for file folders in the advanced section I now have three functions
- the afore mentioned 'create file list'
- explore (the default), and
- find
For the folder file type I just have:
- explore and
- open
Any suggestions on how to put things back to the way Windows Explorer always worked before make clicking folders in the right hand pane open them up properly in the same window as per clicking them on the left hand pane?
When I open my documents, it assigns all my text files to open in Word Pad. I would like it to open assinging all my files as Microsoft Word files. How can I change this?

Hi, I am having a weird problem. I cannot change what programs I use by defualt to open windows files. It does not matter whether I right click on a certain file and choose open with or if I use the tools option in the folder menu. This is what happens. I want to open a .jpg file with picassa photo viewer. I right click the .jpg file and choose open with. I then click browse to locate the .exe file that will open it. Well once I click it I get sent back to the open with window and nothing has changed. The .jpg file will not open with any program that can open it and it will not add the .exe file into the window. This is a bit frustrating as I cannot change what opens certain windows files by default. This goes for any type of file I try to open with any program.

I don't know when this broke, I know I used to be able to open chm files with no trouble but I can't pinpoint the last time it worked.I've searched around and found some references to this, but no solution -the only relevant MSKB is for Win98. I tried regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx, deleting the hh.dat files, clearing IE's file cache; nothing has helped. I haven't made any significant recent changed to the system that I can think of.

Suggest that I go to control panel folder options and choose a program to open my files. When I looked I saw that where the file extensionsare located it showed (NONE) on a good many of the items. I did not buy it, but I did a system restore and then after that, the hy-jacking thing was gone, but I now cannot access my pictures, it says access denied, and some of my My Pictures folders just freeze up, when I try to open, however, they are saying "file is empty", don't know if the files are corrupted or what. They are artwork picture files of eight years of work.
