When I open my documents, it assigns all my text files to open in Word Pad. I would like it to open assinging all my files as Microsoft Word files. How can I change this?
View 2 RepliesWhen I attempt to open a microsoft word doc (or excel) from windows explorer it takes apx. 30 seconds to open ..but if I open the program first , then click on the open icon it comes up instantly.Also movie files from cd take apx 30 seconds to a minute to open even if I have media player already open.This never happened on my old computer ..This new computer is a Gateway purchased in May 2005..I already tried removing unused programs and defragmenting.

I have recently upped the RAM to 1 gig, so can't belive this is the problem.
I just upgraded my very tired old Compaq Presario 7598 from 98SE to XP home edition, somehow I lost Word 2000. Prior to the upgrade I saved all my important docs to an external Buslink hard drive. Now when I try to view my stuff it says I need Word 2000. When I put the disk in it asks for the numbers off the jewel case, I don't have these as it came as bundled software when I originally bought the computer. Compaq is being of no help!! View 1 Replies View RelatedI have ms bundled on windows XP my hp pavilion 1335w. I have saved a lot of word processing documents for my new (3 mos.) job. Now when I try to re-open them for revisal, or even just to look at them, I get a msg in a small window that says "Works task launcher cannot open the file you selected. It may have been either moved or deleted." If I can't get to some of these, I will lose my job! And I don't even know where to go for help, this is the first place i've tried. Can someone either sove the problem, or tell me when I can go for the answer?
View 24 Replies View Relatedwhen I try to open a Lotus WordPro file (*lwp) inside a folder it can take 30 seconds or more to open. Sometimes I have to click on the file a second time at which time I get a(not responding) message on the folder bar.If I open the same file by starting WordPro and selecting the same file from among recently opened files it opens almost instantly. Other types of files don't seem to be affected the system crashes when I right click on a folder to try and display properties.

When I place a text or document file from my account into any other account, they cannot open them as they used to be able to. The last file that I can open between accounts was created on 11/29/2006.This is not just limited to Microsoft Word for Windows, but for files made in Excel, WordPad, and NotePad txt files as well. I think it should be easy to check, for it's probably a recent Windows Update, but the trouble is that I recently had to format my hard drive and start over, so I don't know which of the 200 or so it is that I had to download. I am hoping that all I need to do is to uninstall it.If this was an Windows Update, then I need to uninstall it because I need to be able to send people files and have them be able to read them.The exact error message for a document created in Word is: "Word cannot open the document: User does not have access privileges (C:...MyDocuments(name of file).doc)".I am running Windows XP Professional on a home made computer with 1024 MB RAM, and an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor.

It will however load if I am already in the program which usually opens it. Beside them it says SIG file, which I have no idea what that means. Also, it is just a blank box beside the file name (in my documents list) when usually there is a mini icon showing which program will work to open it.

Got annoyed and reinstalled XP Pro SP3.I backed up my files before goin back to XP on an external HD. And when I copied back the files to the pc I saw, to my horror, that everything looked ok. But when I try to open text documents, it's just garbled text. Looks like this.Every single document looks like that, rtf files, txt files, word documents and so on. And I've tried to open them and converting to different codings in word and so on (UTF, ANSII and what not). Nothing works.And then I saw, when I was gonna import my bookmarks in Firefox that I saved before I went back to XP from Vista, that those html files also are full of garbled text
I looked around on google, and can't find anything about it I would greatly appreciate some help. Every single text document, which is quite a few, is messed up. And some of them, I didnt even open in Vista.. So don't know if it's because of Vista or if its something else.
when ever i start any video application it shows that something has gone wrong and prog is to be closed,and pror closes everything on desktop closes and disappear only to reappear again after some time.
View 3 Replies View RelatedHi, I am having a weird problem. I cannot change what programs I use by defualt to open windows files. It does not matter whether I right click on a certain file and choose open with or if I use the tools option in the folder menu. This is what happens. I want to open a .jpg file with picassa photo viewer. I right click the .jpg file and choose open with. I then click browse to locate the .exe file that will open it. Well once I click it I get sent back to the open with window and nothing has changed. The .jpg file will not open with any program that can open it and it will not add the .exe file into the window. This is a bit frustrating as I cannot change what opens certain windows files by default. This goes for any type of file I try to open with any program.

I can open excel itself, but just no files. old or new.When I open Word it says "The file filename is unavailable" Then when I close it, it is telling me that "The file normal already exists. do you want to replace it?" if i click yes it goes away but still wont open my file next time. If i click no it tries to save in to the TEMPLATES FILE under NORMAL. My Norton Antivirus has also taken away my privileges so I can edit the updates and Norton Internet Security says that the file cannot be found when I click on the desktop icon. The Norton Internet Security icon has disappeared off my task bar. I've been trying to download updates for windows, but it wont alow me too
Word and Notepad are very slow to open. Other heavy programs behave more reasonably. HD was defragmented.
My customer assures me that they could send excel/word docs without opening outlook.Even on my p.c. docs stay in outbox until outlook is opened

With Explorer I end up hitting cancel about 10 times and it takes about 30 seconds and it asks me for a CD I don't have, I hit cancel some more, and then Explorer finally loads. With Word and Excel, I just hit cancel once, and then Word and Excel never do load.

I don't know when this broke, I know I used to be able to open chm files with no trouble but I can't pinpoint the last time it worked.I've searched around and found some references to this, but no solution -the only relevant MSKB is for Win98. I tried regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx, deleting the hh.dat files, clearing IE's file cache; nothing has helped. I haven't made any significant recent changed to the system that I can think of.

The OS does see the DVD drive because Roxio can burn to the drive. I prefer saving directly to the the drive from Word. What could be the problem?

Those receiving the e-mail say they get an error message that they can not open the program. The receivers usually ask me to resend as a Word Document. This includes "My Documents", "Control Panel", and of course Internet Explorer. When I click My Documents, it thinks about it, then all the icons on the desktop disappear for a moment and all that I have is the background image. Then the icons return and Explorer does not open. View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter a recent major cleanup, Windows XP's special folders will not open properly when I double-click them on the desktop. I get a "File does not have a program associated with it ..." error instead. I can still access the folders by rightclick and selecting 'Explore', I just can't double-click from the desktop. it seems that Window's special folders (i.e. My Documents, My Computer, Control panel and the Recycle Bin), are not really files or true folders - they are called 'Special folders'. Also, the problem is self-induced and not the result of a virus or spyware issue - I have done it to myself. Too bad I don't have a recent registry backup or System Restore point I can use.So, my question is how to I fuss with the default associations on the 'Special folders'?

Word, Excel, Power point all open with "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Professional." If I try to open any file I created in the past, the same thing happens. I had to reinstall all my programs again, and everything went swell, untill I hit one problem. I had a ton of data (over 15 GB of pictures/music, etc) on my desktop. Since it was on my desktop, I now have my previous user folder in my documents, and I am un able to open it, delete it, rename it, etc. I know that the data is still there because when I check how much of my drive is taken up, it is obvious. I have quite a bit of free space on the hard drive, I run CCleaner, sophos antivirus, defrag, etc. I try to keep the system clean but am not sure if there is anything I can do to improve the performance.
