Slow To Open Word, Notepad/ Other Programs Are Fine?
Aug 5, 2005Word and Notepad are very slow to open. Other heavy programs behave more reasonably. HD was defragmented.

None Of The Word Processors Save Notepad
Sep 25, 2007None of the word processors on my computer, save notepad, work at all. When I double click the application, it shows the hourglass for a split second, and it disappears again, as if I'd never clicked anything. Actually, MS word worked. Except it always had some random error and just exited itself. So as far as I'm concerned, I can't use any of my word processors.I ran a CHKDSK scan, it took several hours to complete, but I did it, and the problem persisted.So I decided to get a HJT log. Sep 7, 2005When I attempt to open a microsoft word doc (or excel) from windows explorer it takes apx. 30 seconds to open ..but if I open the program first , then click on the open icon it comes up instantly.Also movie files from cd take apx 30 seconds to a minute to open even if I have media player already open.This never happened on my old computer ..This new computer is a Gateway purchased in May 2005..I already tried removing unused programs and defragmenting.

It boots up ok but programs open vary slow (word xl) internet explorer8 is even slower i have tried mozilla firefox and its no better it takes me 2 to 5 minutes to get online. Shut down is pretty slow and I'll usually get a message that something is not responding latley when I boot up I get a box pop up for lela 3.1 saying it will fix my network i know its som kind of spyware i x out but how can i get rid of it? have run scan reg it finds problems fixes them but thay come back.

Nov 3, 2007Ok, I honestly don't know why, but my computer has been running very very slow lately.. programs are taking forever to load, Internet Explorer windows take 5 years it seems like to come up, and it's just running slow all around My computer is about a 2-3 year old Dell that has run amazingly since the day I installed Windows on it. AVIs to Zip files get Notepad. I suspect a registry entry but I don't know where to look and Google failed to find anything close to what i was looking for. The problem first occurred with my HOSTS file. I typed the c:windowssystem32driversetchosts into my run and instead of the Choose program it immediately opened in notepad, convenient in that instances but not the majority of the time...
I have checked for Spyware (clean), run AVG (clean), and I am very reluctant to reinstall windows, again. Last time they tried to force me to purchase a new copy of windows pro after installing it and activating it on the SAME system (not this computer) for the third time. Sep 18, 2007I do not know what really is the problem. The taskbar buttons could not be seen when i have other programs and windows running. I can only switch from one window to another using the Alt+Tab button. I am using windows XP Home. I've made a printscreen of the problem.

Prior to the upgrade I saved all my important docs to an external Buslink hard drive. Now when I try to view my stuff it says I need Word 2000. When I put the disk in it asks for the numbers off the jewel case, I don't have these as it came as bundled software when I originally bought the computer. Compaq is being of no help!! Also a window popped up that says Microsoft word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install application. I don't have the cd its lost.
