I do not know what really is the problem. The taskbar buttons could not be seen when i have other programs and windows running. I can only switch from one window to another using the Alt+Tab button. I am using windows XP Home. I've made a printscreen of the problem.
View 5 RepliesWith XP Pro SP2, I enable "Group similar taskbar buttons". I generally have my taskbar stretched 2 to 3 rows even so. Sometimes, when I have a lot of windows open, and the similar taskbar buttons group and stack themselves, so 1 button contains 2 or 3 open tasks, I can't get any action out of the buttons that represent multiple open tasks.
Any of the taskbar buttons that represent a single open task are fine. But any buttons that represent multiple open tasks don't respond. I have to do Alt -
Tab to bring a task to the front, if it's one of the tasks on a button that represents a group. Or I can go to Taskbar Properties, and deselect "Group similar taskbar buttons".
I want to see all task bar buttons and not have them grouped. XP Taskbar menu offers check "Group similar taskbar buttons." I leave this unchecked, then Apply, then OK. XP still groups the similar buttons (e.g., Word doc1, Word doc2, etc.) instead of having these ungrouped.

always pops up when I turn on my computer and tries to install a driver for my printer. None of the many methods and "workarounds" described online did anything to stop it.I have no desire at all for this feature, I can install drivers myself,and want to completely disable it.
i fuond out that my . for exampe i take out hdd of my computer and put it into new one putting my hdd as a master. windows starts perfectly. as i know others can't do the same but i can is it something wrong?

View 18 Replies View RelatedI have Windows XP and my administrator account is not working properly.Sound devices disappear, but it only happens on admin. user. If I switch user to a limited account, the sound device is there. Sometimes as my admin user is loading the screen goes black and the computer restarts. Sometimes the firewall has been turned off, or the virus scan is disabled. My internet explorer will not open. I created another user as an administrator and it does the same thing. But the limited accounts are all working fine. I have run a virus scan with MacAfee, and also run Xoft Spy and Spybot. I have an AMD Sempron Processor 2600+ and DSL internet connection. Someone told me it could have something to do with the auto updates.Please tell me if this sounds like a virus (that only attacks the admin user?!@!) or how I can fix this. There is no help and support on the start menu for a limited account.

I've recently setup a limited user account on a XPSP2 Home machine. The intent is to use it for internet and email. When I switch to this account, and try to setup, say, my email client, the configuration or settings do not stick. On a couple other apps too, when I click on them to start them, it's as if it's the first time they are being executed. I enter the info, apply or save, and when I shut the app and come back into it, the same thing happens. For instance; in the email client, each time I go in, the setup wizard starts and asks for my pop3 and smtp etc..I enter it, save, shut the app, come back in and the wizard starts again, asking for the same things.

The PC is also running Norton Antivirus 2005.Also on this LAN are several networked printers,one of them being a new HP OfficeJet 7310xi All-In-One printer. This printer is connected directly to the LAN and provides networked printing and scanning to the PCs on the LAN. I have two Windows 2000 Pro PCs and a Mac OS X printing and scanning to that OfficeJet without any problems From the XP box, I can print to the OfficeJet as long as I'm logged as the local administrator. When the user logs in with her user account, she is unable to print. Her jobs get stuck in the queue, labeled "Error - Printing."

If i go into 'mouse' in the control panel there is the facility to reverse the buttons and it's already ticked, you can untick the box but can't apply or OK it. When I try that the mouse buttons cease to to anything although you can still move the cursor around. I suspected viruses, and have done several sweeps with Spybot, AdAaware, Norton, AVG. HJT CW Shredder. Nothing much found and its still doing it.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI had to restart my computer after it finished a spyware scan. It restarted just fine, but I noticed a lot of things wrong once I logged on.
1)can't minimize programs to the taskbar. They won't show up if I try to minimize them, but I can access them by using alt+tab.
2)can't hide inactive windows, no circle with the arrows to click to minimize. I've tried right clicking on the taskbar and going to properties, but when i click hide inactive icons, and click apply nothing happens. Also when I click the customize button, the customize notification menu is empty.
3)I have no sound. I went to the control panel and checked on the sound and audio devices. I went through all of the tabs and they all said there was no device, but when i checked the hardware properties it said everything was working properly.
4)when I access the task manager and click on the processes tab, the user name column is empty. Usually there is either administrator or system.Other than these problems, everything else works fine. I recently installed something before my computer restarted and I uninstalled it and restarted it again and the same problem was there. if anybody knows what to do I would be extremely greatful.
I have a gateway notebook running Windows XP. There are 2 user accounts, each with administrative rights. I recently installed SP2, defragged the hard drive, and cleaned up some spyware and adware with spybot and adaware. I am also running Norton Anti-Virus and all definitions are up-to-date. (This is my college daughter's computer). All ran fine after doing this, but after the next boot, the taskbar completely disappeared. I was finally able to get it back, but only by selecting the quick launch toolbar. If I deselect the quick launch tool bar, the whole taskbar goes away. The real problem is that programs no longer show up on the taskbar when they are opened (Word, Excel, IE, Trillian, etc). And, if I open a program, and then minimize it, it goes away completely as though it were closed, but if I open task manager, the application is still running. I have to close the applications from task manager. The really odd thing is that this is only happening on one of the user accounts (my daughter's). The other user account is functioning normally. Short of creating an additional user account or using system restore and starting all over, does anyone have any ideas on how to repair this?

The missing programs aren't listed in the Uninstall registry key and I'm confident there are not viruses on the machine.

I have Windows XP.I should also mention that this started happening when I rebooted my computer and got an error message that said "SRV #001 CLED Error." I've been told, by the technicians at the shop where I had bought this pc, that they have heard of such cases often recently, but they didn't try to understand why, they just formatted the hd and reinstalled windows. I am wondering if there's a way to repair this.
I've read on some forums that osme adware called "sysu.exe" , "ddm", causes such a problem, bu I haven't those apparently. Otherwise norton , and spybot s&d don't detect anything that might cause this either...
This is one of those problems that is difficult to search for, though I tried pretty hard.Facts:When multiple programs are running, if I click an icon on the taskbar to switch to that program, the icon just blinks. Sometimes when I have the problem, if I quickly click it 4 or 5 times it will switch. Other times, that doesn't help. I have to use ALT+TAB to switch programs. Restarting the computer or logging off/on corrects the problem. Shutting down all running programs and opening them again doesn't help. Has been happening for a long time, but I'm fed up with it today Happens only sometimes, but I can't find a common variable between the occurrences and I can't reproduce it on demand WinXP Home (multiple accounts, but only one person needs logged in when problem occurs.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI just got a laptop with 200 server installed on it and I would like to learn about it. I need some help with what I thought would be a simple setup. I want to set up 2 users for this laptop. myself and my daughter. I have it set with myself as the admin and her as a user. I want to be able to limit the amount of damage she does to the poor thing. My main question is how to set up certain programs to work and not work for her. I have one program music match that works in admin but not on user even though it seems to say it will work for users. From what I have seen from this operating system its not real easy to set it up. I have a book from the library but its a que and not good for me. Any advise on a good book would be great. I know it would be easier to use xp or win 2000 pro but thats not nearly challenging enough for me.

The task bar at the bottom of the screen is the normal size (if there is a normal) but when I actived Quick Launch so icons would appear in the taskbar, it doubled in size. The icons adjacent to the Start button are lined up horizantally but the icons in the system try are in groups. I have tried re-sizing the taskbar by placing the cursor on the upper edge where a up and down arrow appears but I cannot drag the taskbar down to make it smaller. I deactivated quick launch, locked the task bar and then re-actived quick launch but it still increases is size. Can anyone tell me how to resolve this issue?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm sure I am overlooking something obvious, but numerous recent problems with my system seem to be (hopefully) tied to the same source.I just don't know what it is.I am running windows XP home, service pack one (I have recently reverted back from SP2 thinking it may be the cause of the problems)
1) Any and all telnet type programs refusing to connect to any host (telnet, zmud, gmud, etc) In the case of zmud I can observe that my computer is in no way interfacing with another machine. telnet error is 'unable to contact host machine'
2) Windows media player (version 10) is unable to retrieve album info. Instead I immediately get a standard IE 'page cannot be displayed' screen.
3) Unable to register for many programs such as Gracenote. In the case of gracenote I recieve a 'socket open failed' error message.I am not currently running any firewall.
I only hae a 56k internet connection, so the instantaneous negative connection responses many of my programs display make it fairly obvious that this is a problem with my machine. I hope it is some silly xp setting I need to change.
I had to have Windows XP installed because it had gotten corrupted and now I'm having a problem with the Icons on the taskbar hiding.I made sure that the Lock The Taskbar option is checked but its still hiding icons. How do I fix this????

A good deal of my programs don't work after I run them once so i have to reinstall them every time i want to use them (iTunes, SmartFTP client, Propellerhead Reason, Ahead Nero).Also, sometimes when I boot up my computer, the taskbar, start button, and icons don't load up and I need to end the 'explorer.exe' process and manually restart it. Then after going to the start menu then 'all programs' once or twice, the menu just freezes up and closes without letting me choose a program. At first I thought that my windows install was corrupt or something but then I remembered that none of this started happening until after I reformated my drives. Today I just finished reformating again and i'm having the same problems the programs not wanting to work. I would love any help (hopefully its not my hardware.)
