I am running XPPRO with all latest updates and recently when I minimized any programs, it stopped showing the program on the taskbar. Now I do not know which programs are running or have to use the CTRL-TAB to switch between programs. I tried to look for setting which would re-enable this but could not find this.
View 6 RepliesI was on my Windows XP account and I accidentally opened PowerPoint and then a little notice speech bubble appeared on my taskbar so I clicked the little [X] and it didn't close. Then I ignored it, thinking it would close sooner or later, closed PowerPoint and then my computer froze (but i could move the mouse) and then the taskbar went black! I can't access the Start or Taskbar! Help me this isn't even my computer, it's actually my mom's and I'm afraid I broke it!Then I wanted to completely close my account, so I went on my mom's Window XP account and tried to close it but I'm still logged in! Are there Hot Keys I can use to log off without using the Start button?
View 3 Replies View Relatedso I've had this problem for a while now and it's been bugging me for weeks until I found this nifty little board here, and a few others(they weren't that helpful).My taskbar won't show my windows when they're minized, or even open actually and the shortcut keys won't hide the extra icons I have anymore. I also screwed up really bad when I just tried to clean my computer with Mcafee quick cleaner and accidentally deleted all my system restore points. Restarting my computer obviously does nothing, so the problem is how do I restore my taskbar to its original state?

When I try to access the directory from the client pc's, I keep the message: "IE has restricted....from showing active content". View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently worked on a computer that has not been updated since probably 1998. When I went to IE, it immediately went to WINDOWS UPDATES. Since they have dial-up only, it was 3 hours and only at 21%, I decided to just shut it down.So now.............how do I stop the updates altogether? They rarely are on the net, they use it for work only, and since their computer runs fine, I can't see allocating that much down-time from their workday to upload the updates.
View 1 Replies View RelatedTired of being constantly nagged by reboot requests after installing XP updates I went to the wsindows update folder in Group Policy and enabled the "No automatic restart for scheduled updates" option, clicked apply and forgot about it. Untill my computer installed the automatic update for .Netframework, when, without any warning it went into reboot mode causing me to completely lose the data I was working on. The only other option in the update folder is to delay the restart but as this only allows you to stretch it to a max of 30 minutes it's not much help.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got windows XP and want to stop some things running when I boot windows. I've tried running MSCONFIG and un-ticking programs in the startup tab. Next time I boot the same programs still load. When I looked in MSCONFIG again the programs were un-ticked, but if I scroll down they have all appeared again ticked. Can anyone help me cause I've got some pretty pointless things starting that slow my PC down?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI ran adware and spybot s&d it found a trojan horse when it removed the files i restarted my comp and i cant get icons on desktop or the taskbar to show up all i can do is use the task manager with new task. I tried messing with msconfig and doing system restore to the last working configuration and it didnt work. I tried creating a new windows user acct it didnt work either.

Explorer.exe does not start automatically but if you go into task manager you can start it (it opens onto 'my documents').
Everything seems to open fine from here - iexplorer can be started and I can get online.
Also when I right click on the desktop I get nothing.
When I start my computer Iget only 2 or 3 icons in the taskbar and then nothing else happens. When I put the cursor on start I get the hourglass,and the icons on my desktop dont respond either. Ive gone into the task manager and ended the explorer.exe process and then re started it, and this works sometimes. Ive done system restore with 3 different dates and the problem still comes back. I use McAfee antivirus and get regular updates daily and hevent found any viruses.

I had to restart my computer after it finished a spyware scan. It restarted just fine, but I noticed a lot of things wrong once I logged on.
1)can't minimize programs to the taskbar. They won't show up if I try to minimize them, but I can access them by using alt+tab.
2)can't hide inactive windows, no circle with the arrows to click to minimize. I've tried right clicking on the taskbar and going to properties, but when i click hide inactive icons, and click apply nothing happens. Also when I click the customize button, the customize notification menu is empty.
3)I have no sound. I went to the control panel and checked on the sound and audio devices. I went through all of the tabs and they all said there was no device, but when i checked the hardware properties it said everything was working properly.
4)when I access the task manager and click on the processes tab, the user name column is empty. Usually there is either administrator or system.Other than these problems, everything else works fine. I recently installed something before my computer restarted and I uninstalled it and restarted it again and the same problem was there. if anybody knows what to do I would be extremely greatful.
I have a gateway notebook running Windows XP. There are 2 user accounts, each with administrative rights. I recently installed SP2, defragged the hard drive, and cleaned up some spyware and adware with spybot and adaware. I am also running Norton Anti-Virus and all definitions are up-to-date. (This is my college daughter's computer). All ran fine after doing this, but after the next boot, the taskbar completely disappeared. I was finally able to get it back, but only by selecting the quick launch toolbar. If I deselect the quick launch tool bar, the whole taskbar goes away. The real problem is that programs no longer show up on the taskbar when they are opened (Word, Excel, IE, Trillian, etc). And, if I open a program, and then minimize it, it goes away completely as though it were closed, but if I open task manager, the application is still running. I have to close the applications from task manager. The really odd thing is that this is only happening on one of the user accounts (my daughter's). The other user account is functioning normally. Short of creating an additional user account or using system restore and starting all over, does anyone have any ideas on how to repair this?

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I turn my computer on it opens in my documents. I have no desktop icons and no start menu. The only thing I see is my desktops background picture. When it opens in my documents, I can click on my desktop and the items are in there, so I can access the internet that way. When I shut down the computer, I hit ctrl+alt+del, and shut it down or restart it from there.

View 7 Replies View Relatedfew programs began showing up in the System Tray that I didn't want to open.I went to msconfig/General and checked Selective Startup without knowing whether or not I needed to.Then, I went to Startup and deselected those programs.That worked for a while till I went back to misconfig and checked for Normal Startup Since the unwanted programs appeared again in my System Tray, I unchecked them in Normal Startup mode. But when I boot up my computer, I find that I am still in Selective Startup even though I checked for Normal.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSo I have no taskbar nor icons on the desktop. Except that all works very well... I have access to the programs and all my documents via the taskmanager. I've been told, by the technicians at the shop where I had bought this pc, that they have heard of such cases often recently, but they didn't try to understand why, they just formatted the hd and reinstalled windows. I am wondering if there's a way to repair this.
I've read on some forums that osme adware called "sysu.exe" , "ddm", causes such a problem, bu I haven't those apparently. Otherwise norton , and spybot s&d don't detect anything that might cause this either...
This is one of those problems that is difficult to search for, though I tried pretty hard.Facts:When multiple programs are running, if I click an icon on the taskbar to switch to that program, the icon just blinks. Sometimes when I have the problem, if I quickly click it 4 or 5 times it will switch. Other times, that doesn't help. I have to use ALT+TAB to switch programs. Restarting the computer or logging off/on corrects the problem. Shutting down all running programs and opening them again doesn't help. Has been happening for a long time, but I'm fed up with it today Happens only sometimes, but I can't find a common variable between the occurrences and I can't reproduce it on demand WinXP Home (multiple accounts, but only one person needs logged in when problem occurs.

If I click on yes or no, in regard to showing all users, I still can't get to the window that shows the programs running. I don't know how this happened, but I did install a new external hard drive. How can I get my task manager back to the normal viewing that I am used to?

Trouble is, I cannot see it in my add/remove list. does auto updates only download security updates and I assume I dont have to do anything.

When I start Notepad it starts up minimized on the taskbar and will not come up no matter what I try which isn't much. I just stays minimized. I literally have to click the minimized window three times before I can get it to come on top.The first time I click it shows the minimized window depressed then highlighted, the 2nd time I click it goes through the motion of minimizing an already minimized window (you actually see it minimizing); and the 3rd time I click brings the window to the front.

In addition, every time I reset my computer, the entry is reset to 0. What can keep my registry from being saving this information?Running Windows XP Pro, and I have no idea how this problem even started.
