Taskbar Won't Show Windows When They Are Minimized
Jan 16, 2008
so I've had this problem for a while now and it's been bugging me for weeks until I found this nifty little board here, and a few others(they weren't that helpful). My taskbar won't show my windows when they're minized, or even open actually and the shortcut keys won't hide the extra icons I have anymore. I also screwed up really bad when I just tried to clean my computer with Mcafee quick cleaner and accidentally deleted all my system restore points. Restarting my computer obviously does nothing, so the problem is how do I restore my taskbar to its original state?
I was on my Windows XP account and I accidentally opened PowerPoint and then a little notice speech bubble appeared on my taskbar so I clicked the little [X] and it didn't close. Then I ignored it, thinking it would close sooner or later, closed PowerPoint and then my computer froze (but i could move the mouse) and then the taskbar went black! I can't access the Start or Taskbar! Help me this isn't even my computer, it's actually my mom's and I'm afraid I broke it!Then I wanted to completely close my account, so I went on my mom's Window XP account and tried to close it but I'm still logged in! Are there Hot Keys I can use to log off without using the Start button?
I am running XPPRO with all latest updates and recently when I minimized any programs, it stopped showing the program on the taskbar. Now I do not know which programs are running or have to use the CTRL-TAB to switch between programs. I tried to look for setting which would re-enable this but could not find this.
I have noticed since one of my last windows update that I am having a problem clicking once a minimized window to bring it on top. I literally have to click the minimized window three times before I can get it to come on top.The first time I click it shows the minimized window depressed then highlighted, the 2nd time I click it goes through the motion of minimizing an already minimized window (you actually see it minimizing); and the 3rd time I click brings the window to the front.
Just recently, all of my programs, e-mail client (Juno) and Explorer open minimized. I max them out, and then close them, but it's still happening.I read somewhere that there is a registry fix for this. Does anyone out there have the fix (or other solution)?I do not have a restore point to go to.
I have had a problem recently where any minimized windows that are updated (such as IMs) don't flash on my taskbar.I have narrowed this to a problem in my register- I was told that Fore ground Lock Timeout is supposed to be set to 30d40, but doing so doesn't help. In addition, every time I reset my computer, the entry is reset to 0. What can keep my registry from being saving this information?Running Windows XP Pro, and I have no idea how this problem even started.
Suddenly, and without my doing, suddenly whatever program I open shows up on my bottom taskbar illegibly. It used to be that each program had a nice 1.5 inches or so all lined up along the taskbar below, from left to right.. Now, all the programs operate 1cm at the far right of my toolbar, between my language setting and the small-icon taskbar. They are all piled up on top of one another, regardless of application, with 2 small up and down arrow buttons. I can't even tell you how uncomfortable it is to switch from window to window or program to program. How can I switch this back?My computer is not restoring for some reason so I have to do this manually.
Since reinstalling XP my minimized windows are not side by side on the task bar any longer there are two arrows which usually means they are in a list but they aren't, they just stack up on top of each other with only one icon which I have to keep clicking to resume the page I want to view.
I have a gateway notebook running Windows XP. There are 2 user accounts, each with administrative rights. I recently installed SP2, defragged the hard drive, and cleaned up some spyware and adware with spybot and adaware. I am also running Norton Anti-Virus and all definitions are up-to-date. (This is my college daughter's computer). All ran fine after doing this, but after the next boot, the taskbar completely disappeared. I was finally able to get it back, but only by selecting the quick launch toolbar. If I deselect the quick launch tool bar, the whole taskbar goes away. The real problem is that programs no longer show up on the taskbar when they are opened (Word, Excel, IE, Trillian, etc). And, if I open a program, and then minimize it, it goes away completely as though it were closed, but if I open task manager, the application is still running. I have to close the applications from task manager. The really odd thing is that this is only happening on one of the user accounts (my daughter's). The other user account is functioning normally. Short of creating an additional user account or using system restore and starting all over, does anyone have any ideas on how to repair this?
I use windows XP professional SP2. After open any program it don't show on taskbar. If I minimize program I can not see program on taskbar. I must use ALt+Tab for show my program. How I fix this problem.
Whenever I log on, no programs show on the taskbar, and I have to switch between them with Task Manager. Also, the Connect To submenu in Start menu is not showing, and I have to connect through Control Panel. Is there an easy way to fix this?
When I boot my computer, the task bar notification area shows icons for CA Security Center, a local area connection, and sometimes Intel PROset/wireless but that is all. If I run Task Bar Repair Tool Plus and select Show all listed Tray icons, the remaining icons are displayed until the next boot.
can someone give me a little assistance? i have a Dell inspiron laptop and once i turn it on the desktop icons and the start taskbar do not show up so i found a way to get into the control panel but it will not let me access the start menu.
I am trying to fix a PC for someone. It is an older HP running xp home. When i boot the pc it goes to the home screen with the wallpaper but it does not show the start menu or any icons. i also tried booting into safe mode and i see the same thing. no icons nor task bar. what can i do? i want to install some anti virus software but i cant do anything since there is no task bar or anything. what are my options other than formating?
Since installing IE7 the open windows on the taskbar show the url instead of the website name. For example instead of showing 'Yahoo' it says http://yahoo.com. Is there a way to change this?
I was on my friends computer looking for viruses, spyware, adware, etc. It was pretty clean since he had recently reformatted. I randomly tried to open up a text file and it brought up the screen where you select a program to open it with. Well, notepad isn't there. I goto browse and select it in the Windows dir and press ok and it still doesn't show up in the list. Whats going on? He has Windows XP Pro with SP2.
I'm running a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Windows XP Home on it.My problem is as such:When ever I close an explorer window, the taskbar and desktop icons disappear for a few seconds...Its quite annoying, and it also closes any other Windows I have open.Programs don't seem to be affected.Has anyone come across this problem? And are there any solutions?
Had diffs yesterday with computer running at snail speed > did ad-aware/norton scans to clean up > now when I minimize any open window, the tab/s just disappear/s to the left of the lower taskbar so they can't be opened easily again. Must be an easy fix for this but after hours of research in MS Help + Google + your existing threads, haven't been able to source a solution. It happened once before but I can't recall how I got it going properly again - that's what age does to the memory!! Now when I have a PC prob & manage to solve it, I note the solution for the future!Would greatly appreciate any suggestions to solve this irritating prob.
i bought star wars battlefront 2. my swbf2 disk broken (broke disk #2). the good thing is that i could still play with disk 1... until i got a virus and had to clean install windows. luckly b4 that happened i burnt all the swbf2 data to a dvd. now i copied everything from the disk to E:programfileslucasarts starwarsbattlefrontII (its an external harddrive) but it doesnt show up in the add remove thing. i heard that the windows registry handles things like this, so how can i update the registry to show swbf2 installed? i have windows xp sp2.
This just started happening today. When I minimize any app that I am using, it doesn't show up on the toolbar with Start in the bottom left corner. Only way I can see what's been minimized is to open Windows Task Manager. Can anyone please tell me how to fix this?
I just ran across this problem on a computer and can't figure out how to fix it. When I start Notepad it starts up minimized on the taskbar and will not come up no matter what I try which isn't much. I just stays minimized. I can right click it and get Maximize, Restore etc. but it just stays there.
I wonder if there is a way to move the minimized windows icons between them (in windows Xp professional) for example if I open explorer and minimize and then one word file and minimize and then excel file and I minimize and now I would wanna put the minimized icon of excel on the first place?
Ever been annoyed by the ballon that keeps showing when you minimize your callwave caller ID into the tray? It pestered the crap out of me! I happened to be mess'n around with the taskbar, one day and found the fix.
1. Right click an empty spot on the task bar, click properties, on taskbar index. Look in notification, see that the check is in the hide inactive icons. click the customize button.
2. From here the customization window opens. Go to your callwave service and click to "highlight", under behavior, click "scroll box" then click "always hide".While you are in there you can make other icons behaviors act the way you would like to see them displayed. I chose only a couple to view full time, for things that I wanted the fastest access to.
I use the Show Desktop feature on my taskbar often, however this also minimizes my dock. I have a program called Rocket Dock that I would like to stay maximized when I click Show Desktop so I was wondering if there's a way to exclude this program from being minimized.
I have a "Forums Folder" on my desktop. When I click on it it opens in a minimized position. I stretch it by the edges to full screen and all is fine. When I click on any of the shortcuts in that folder they sometimes open in a minimized position.I stretch again. The next time I go to open it, I have to do it all over again.
How do I minimize Outlook 2002 to the system tray? You can use the registry to minimize Outlook 2002 to the system tray by performing the following steps: Start the registry editor (regedit.exe). Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice10.0OutlookPreferences. From the Edit menu, select New, DWORD value. Enter a name of MinToTray. Double-click the new value, and set it to 1. Restart Outlook. After you perform these steps, Outlook will reside in the system tray.
I have an issue with my new clean install on XP. Every time I boot, C:Program Files keps opening. Here is the stuff I have tried so far. I looked in msconfig, the startup folder and in Startup on my programs list and it doesn't show up in any of these places. It isn't a new program, so it's not because I installed it recently. Here is HiJack This log for reference. I dont have clue what's to look in this. But may be it will help you. Similarly I have copy-pasted contents from autoexec.bat,win.ini and sys.ini for debugging. You may notice that there is TaskMgr link in startup. But its just one of my app I need on startup in my taskbar. It startup as minimized and it has setting "Hide on Minimized" checked in TaskManager. So It remains in taskbar always.

With XP Pro SP2, I enable "Group similar taskbar buttons". I generally have my taskbar stretched 2 to 3 rows even so. Sometimes, when I have a lot of windows open, and the similar taskbar buttons group and stack themselves, so 1 button contains 2 or 3 open tasks, I can't get any action out of the buttons that represent multiple open tasks.
Any of the taskbar buttons that represent a single open task are fine. But any buttons that represent multiple open tasks don't respond. I have to do Alt - Tab to bring a task to the front, if it's one of the tasks on a button that represents a group. Or I can go to Taskbar Properties, and deselect "Group similar taskbar buttons".
I've just switched from 98 to XP. I find now that the window designations in the taskbar for my *browser windows only* are severely and unaccountably truncated. My browser is IE6. Even if there's only one window open, if it's a browser window, only one letter will display. Other windows will properly display the full name. I've turned taskbar grouping on and off with no change. I've also run the SFC utility, with no change. There is no such problem in my Win98 machine, and my security settings (and all other settings) are the same. I don't wish to upgrade to IE7.
I want to see all task bar buttons and not have them grouped. XP Taskbar menu offers check "Group similar taskbar buttons." I leave this unchecked, then Apply, then OK. XP still groups the similar buttons (e.g., Word doc1, Word doc2, etc.) instead of having these ungrouped.
