few programs began showing up in the System Tray that I didn't want to open.I went to msconfig/General and checked Selective Startup without knowing whether or not I needed to.Then, I went to Startup and deselected those programs. That worked for a while till I went back to misconfig and checked for Normal Startup Since the unwanted programs appeared again in my System Tray, I unchecked them in Normal Startup mode. But when I boot up my computer, I find that I am still in Selective Startup even though I checked for Normal.
Does anyone know how to keep someone from closing programs running in the System Tray? Perahps some software or something to lock access to the System Tray? nFor example: I have a virus program that runs for real-time protection and someone keeps closing the program in the System Tray because they don't like all the icons down there. There is no option in the menus for that program to tell it not to show up in the System Tray.
I recently installed (on my P4 3GHz machine running WinXP SP2) a LogiTech wireless keyboard and mouse combo (MX3200). It seems to be working fine, but I've noticed that ever since I installed the additional software that came with it (for the enhanced features), I've had problems with the speaker icon not loading in the sys tray at startup.
For some reason, when my partner's computer boots up, the Windows taskbar is frozen, sometimes for up to a couple of minutes. When it finally becomes available, the Start menu etc works fine, but the system tray does not display everything that it should (for example the volume control) even though I have set it to "always show" in Properties>Customise
i had attached a snapshot of the icons in my icon tray..pass few days back i found this "X" icon in my tray and i cant remove it and also it doesnt display anything..
I am trying to clean up my computer.. I use tonIARTS thingy and that works great for me but I do have an awful lot of programs that came with the computer that I don't know if I can get rid of safely.. some I have down loaded myself.
I have a number of hidden files which I have forwarded to MY Documents and my Pictures.I want to delete my hidden files but keep the ones I forwarded. What worries me is if i delete hidden ones will the others also be deleted.I was wondering if i changed the names of the ones i want to keep or will they be safe anyway
If you want to remove some additional programs that are installed with windows but are not initially visible in Add / Remove, edit a file called "C:WINDOWSINFSYSOC.INF".In there you will find a listing of programs, and you will note that some programs have the word 'hide' at the end.Now when you open Add-Remove Windows Components, you will see a new choice, in this example, "Windows Messenger"
I think I might need to do this. It's now impossible to click or d/click on a programme or even an email and have it open I have to click 6-10 times before the little hourglass appears.I think I need to change my startup : what do you think? Msconfig shows my startup options to be -Normal Diagnostic Selective Ought to to choose diag?Or Selective?because I can't decide which programmes I ought to remove and which to leave in, but I'm sure I have too many.
I can't seem to get rid of the remnants some Nokia programs that my son installed on the PC.
They wouldn't uninstall using the conventional method so I just deleted the folders and used Registry Medic to clean up the mess.
The only thing left is in the add/remove programs list. I have gone in the registry and in the 'uninstall section' removed all things 'Nokia' but still they remain.
I hate all the unwanted software that comes with this computer, and I don't even use any of the media stuff. Tell me, is it possible to just use dban and then install XP Home from a boot disc that I have? Could anything go wrong?
My computer has been running really slow lately, I don't really know what to do I see some stuff on here about AIM and party poker and money maker or something but I don't use any of those things I don't know where they came from.
when i log onto the computer it automaticly goes to the user admin which i don't want as all my work is on the other user which is also the computer admin. i put the log on screen on but it just goes stright to the admin one with out the log in screen, i tryed to delete it but it does not come up on the user part on control panel, only when i'am logged on, and it will not let me delete it.
I'm running Windows XP SP2 on a Dell Dimension XPS with 250GB hard drive (about 80GB free), 2GB RAM, a Maxtor 300GB USB external hard drive, and an HP Scanjet 5590. Ever since I installed the Maxtor drive and the HP scanner, the respective folders in "C:Program Files" open on the desktop every time I startup Windows. I find this annoying. Under File Explorer folder options view dialog box, I tried unchecking "Restore previous folder windows at logon," which did not help. I looked in my startup folder, but there is no shortcut to these folders there. I checked the registry under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" and "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" but I cannot seem to find a reference to these folders relating to startup. Perhaps I missed something. Should I be looking elsewhere (in the registry or somewhere else)?
My computer has been running really well for the longest time. I've had no problems at all. Then just like 2 days ago my computer started running really slow. Whenever I open up a messenger it hangs and then freezes. I ran my spybot detector and there were a few things but I got rid of them. My virus scan was clear and I also ran my disk defragmenter. I'm not sure if I got a virus somehow. I deleted all my cookies and files.
Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT)Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Uninstall, and remove any unwanted subkeys under Uninstall
I've downloaded Ccleaner and would like to know if ALL the issues in the Applications are completely safe to delete. Some of them I'm not sure about. I'm running Windows XP Pro, but a Pro I'm not!
This is prob an oldie you get sick of answering, but I've tried to use my windows xp discs to reformat my sony laptop to get rid of everything. The problem is things like Norton antivirus and other programs stay on there. How can I get rid of everythingand start from scratch?
Win XP Home edition. I'm in the Speed Up Windows Startup class. I currently have a very long list of startup programs running. Is it safe for me to disable all except security programs (Symantec Norton,AdAware,Spyguard)?Charles
When I turn my computer on it opens in my documents. I have no desktop icons and no start menu. The only thing I see is my desktops background picture. When it opens in my documents, I can click on my desktop and the items are in there, so I can access the internet that way. When I shut down the computer, I hit ctrl+alt+del, and shut it down or restart it from there.
My OS: WinXP Home/SP2. How can I disable the following from loading at startup and appearing in my system tray: 'Vinyl Deck/S3tray plus utility/Windows Messenger' . Also how to disable 'Safely remove hardware' from startup. Msconfig does not show these items in Startup.
I am running XPPRO with all latest updates and recently when I minimized any programs, it stopped showing the program on the taskbar. Now I do not know which programs are running or have to use the CTRL-TAB to switch between programs. I tried to look for setting which would re-enable this but could not find this.
when i first start up my PC it seams slow. like when i try to use a program. its slow to starting up. but after a while things seams to speed up to normal
My ctrl, alt, delete brings up a box that says show processes from all users instead of showing the programs that are running. If I click on yes or no, in regard to showing all users, I still can't get to the window that shows the programs running. I don't know how this happened, but I did install a new external hard drive. How can I get my task manager back to the normal viewing that I am used to?
My computer is really slow and it takes hours just to get to the screen where the User names are. Also when i enter my password and try to log in. The computer usually freezes after showing my wallpaper of desktop items. This is probably because I had installed a few programs. Is there a program or something to that I can use to boot my computer faster? I'm desperate also I really need to keep all the files on my computer on my computer. I have been having problems with my cpu being overheated. The CPU fan makes alot of noise.

How can I get rid of this error on my desktop??? I can click on the red X and it will go away, until I start it up again.
I have Windows XP SP2 and the Wallpaper Changer. When I boot up it shows me the configuration screen. I don't want to see the configuration screen, I just want it to change my wallpaper. Wallpaper never used to do this but when IT took my computer to fix it the removed Wallpaper Changer (they thought it might be causing a problem but it wasn't) so I am confident that there is some way to stop this annoying behavior.
