Sep 25, 2007None of the word processors on my computer, save notepad, work at all. When I double click the application, it shows the hourglass for a split second, and it disappears again, as if I'd never clicked anything. Actually, MS word worked. Except it always had some random error and just exited itself. So as far as I'm concerned, I can't use any of my word processors.I ran a CHKDSK scan, it took several hours to complete, but I did it, and the problem persisted.So I decided to get a HJT log. Changing The Opening Folder In The Works Word Processor?
Jul 8, 2007I have Windows XP Pro, SP2 and version 8.0 of Works.
Now when I start up the Works word processor and I use the "Open" function, it always opens in "My Documents". When I use "WordPad" it opens in the last folder used. Is there a way to make the Works word processor act like this? If not, is there a way to change the default opening folder? (Also is there a way to change the default location where a file is saved?)
Also, since this is closely related, I'll ask this: When you use the Open function in the Works wp, you get the "Open" dialog box. At the bottom there is a drop down box called, "Files of type". It always opens with "Works Document (*.wps). If you click the drop down box, one of the options is "All Files (*.*). Is there a way to change it to this?

Aug 27, 2005I am running Microsoft Works XP and have used the Word Processor to create a resume. I have saved the resume to My Documents. I have sent it out as an attachment to e-mail. Those receiving the e-mail say they get an error message that they can not open the program. The receivers usually ask me to resend as a Word Document. As far as I know it was orginally sent as a word document

Oct 5, 2009When I try to open Microsoft Office Word 2003 a window pops up that says window installer then it says installing microsoft office word feature. It stops half way and another window pops up that says Installation error file not found. A required installation file SKU112.CAB could not be found. Original installation source required. If you installed Microsoft Office Standard edition 2003 from cd please insert your cd.
If you installed Microsoft office standard edition 2003 over your computer network please browse to the installation source on your computer. Also a window popped up that says Microsoft word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install application. I don't have the cd its lost. This just started doing this about a month ago. I can't open any files through microsoft office word or power point.

Yet if I have Word open and click on the document it opens instantaneously. Similarly, when I right click on a document, photo, spreadsheet file, it takes what seems a long time for the menu (Open, Run as, Send to, Delete, etc..) to open.

Jul 3, 2009I have Windows XP Pro SP2 as my OS. When I try to save a document directly from Word onto my DVD I get the message that is read-only. The OS does see the DVD drive because Roxio can burn to the drive. I prefer saving directly to the the drive from Word. What could be the problem?

Jun 25, 2005Notepad has gone missing, the computer is running sluggishly (I have checked for viruses, Spyware ect and run defrag) and desite loads of earlier dates System Restore goes through the motions and then tells me that it is not possible to restore to any of them. When I start Notepad it starts up minimized on the taskbar and will not come up no matter what I try which isn't much. I just stays minimized. Everything--even RUN--opens with notepad. Jun 12, 2008I've always kept my pc up-to-date with all MS patches, and never had any problems.All seemed well after the SP3 installation, until recently.After logging in as 'Administrator', I was asked to 'active windows in the next few days'. I had no problems in doing so (as I'm running a legitimate version of Win XP Pro). I then got a window that said 'Windows is already activated'.All seemed well, then I went to logon last night, again I was asked to 'active windows', when I clicked OK, the system logged me off.My one solution was to boot to safe mode and remove sp3.When I rebooted the pc, all seems well.My question what caused this, and how do I prevent it from happening again? I want to re-install SP3, but am afraid that eventually windows will not let me in at all.

Jan 22, 2005Using old AMD 350 MHz back-up machine lately, out of necessity. Several diagnostic apps, such as Belarc Adviser are reporting it to be 175 MHz. The boot menu is saying 350. Why is this happening, and what can I do to get my 350 MHz. chip to be seen for what it actually is? It's bad enough that I'm forced to use the old boy right now, but I'd be a lot happier if the diagnostic apps were seeing it for what it is.

Aug 5, 2008Having a problem with booting into safe mode on my SONY WinXP Pro computer, I searched on the internet for a solution....This opens the boot.ini file in Notepad.
- One line should end with "/fastdetect" (NOT "/fastdetect /sos"). Copy that line.
- Paste the line you just copied below the original line. Change "WINDOWS=Microsoft XP Professional" to "WINDOWS="Safe Mode" and add the following text to the end of the line: /safeboot:minimal /sos /bootlog
- Save the file and click OK to exit the dialog boxes. Note: If you named the Windows XP installation folder something other than WINDOWS when you installed XP, that name will appear instead of WINDOWS in step 6.
Before following the instructions, I created a backup copy of my boot.ini file. I then proceeded to do as instructed. Unfortunately, I needed access to the internet which this didn't allow for. I then copied the origional boot.ini information back to my boot.ini file in Notepad and saved it. However, when I boot, it still goes into the basic Safe Mode.

Jan 27, 2008For whatever reason Notepad has started freezing whenever I try to save a document. This is incredible annoying as it's my favorite note writing program. Wordpad scrambles anything thats pasted into it. Control panel/add remove programs/Windows components doesn'twork. As Notepad is not listed in the accessories folder, even though it appears that way in program files/accessories. So, how can I fix this?

I am running windows xp professinal and have not installed any other programs or drivers.First, I had a very difficult time installing windows xp professional. During installation, it has turned off unexpectedly and gave no error messages. Then once I was able to get windows xp installed, it installed it with a password. I then re-formated the hard drive and re-installed windows and finally it installed properly. Sep 12, 2005I'm really confused about the whole 32/64 bit issue. I use Gibbs CAM at work and need to get a new desktop system built for it. When I call Gibbs they recommend building the new system based on the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor and running the Windows XP Professional OS. They maintain this configuration really works great and operates better than an Intel 32 bit system. They said ABSOLUTELY DO NOT USE THE WINDOWS XP PRO 64 BIT VERSION as it does not run well and I will have compatibility issues with Gibbs and possibly other software even if I am operating in legacy mode. Gibbs, by the way, does not support 64 bit.

Jan 6, 2005Can someone tell me why, when I open a notepad file, whether from notepad or from Start Documents or what have you, I always get an error message: "Windows cannot find [file locationfilename.txt]. Make sure you type the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search." However, the file does open in notepad behind this error message and I am able to view it, edit it, etc.
I would like this error message not to appear every time (it is really just an annoyance to cancel it every time but after a couple of years I am tired of it) so I tried to find this answer in the archives but to no avail. However, I saw that it was recommended by more than one tech guy (or gal) to save a "hijack this" file in notepad, so I followed the instructions and did that just after my latest error message... The "hijack this" copy of the notepad file follows, and if you see anything else that I should make note of please let me know....
