Notepad has gone missing, the computer is running sluggishly (I have checked for viruses, Spyware ect and run defrag) and desite loads of earlier dates System Restore goes through the motions and then tells me that it is not possible to restore to any of them. I am guessing that my windows Xp is corrupted. Because i dont want the hassle of re-loading all my other programs and files, is there a safe way to repair windows Xp rather than completely reinstalling it?
I just noticed that Notepad is missing from my right-click "New" menu. I have searched the internet and all I can find are instructions for how to put an application in the "Send to" of the right-click menu but I want Notepad to show up in the right-click "New" so I can right click a space in a folder and create a new text file in the folder. I recently uninstalled Adobe dreamweaver cs3 and Indesign cs3 from my PC. Could that be why it dissappeared from my right click menu? Anyhow, anyone know where this is in the registry. Oh yeah, I also have TWEAK UI but for some reason, in the templates, I can't create a new template there. And my icons have also gone crazy. I use firefox as my default browser but the .html files show an icon which is nt associated to any program!! Ho w do i rebuild my icons without reinstalling windows!!
It's been a while since I had to do this so I'm looking for a little refresher here. Just booted up on my XP partition with the message: "windowssystem32configsystem file missing or corrupt please use 'r' for repair. I know I've got to go through the repair recovery, but I can't remember if I use the fixboot from the DOS prompt or fixmbr. Any suggestions or cleaner way to fix this would be greatly appreciated, I guess if all fails it will be back to the dreaded fdisk.
I have a big problem. My CFOs computer has been messed up with the uninstallation of Norton. The computer will not boot after trying to run Autocheck (file is missing or corrupt) and the gives an error. I tried to use the Windows XP disc and the setup sees the partition but cannot recognise the format.Unfortunatley I don't know any commands in command line / repair console. Does anyone know commands to get the machine to run checks / get the machine to install XP? Formatting is the last option as there are some data on the machine that is not backed up.
After uninstalling WinAce i am no longer (As i was before WinAce) able to right click and go New > Compressed Zip or Send to > Compressed Zip. First problem. I need to know the shortcut target for doing this. It might not be a full target as it is part of windows explore like the shortcut for Search is "& Search" I can add stuff to Send To easily. But adding stuff to New is going to be difficult.
I plugged in and switched it on it has been crashing intermittently. This occurs at random intervals and does not seem to be related to whichever program I am using. The monitor goes black and the pc reboots but does not get as far as windows, displaying the message:windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32/Drivers/Ntfs.sys"unable to do this because after pressing "r" at the first "welcome to set-up" screen I get the message:
"Setup did not find any hard disk drive(s) installed on your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered up and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or Setup program. Setup cannot continue. To exit Setup press F3"
I have tried FIXMBR, FIXBOOT and now trying to reinstall using the guide in another thread. I do not get the same R option when I get to the SETUP screen. It looks to me like it will fresh install XP and wipe everything. Originally I was getting missing SYSTEM file and boot stops. I found what I thought was the SYSTEM file and put it into the directory but it still will not boot. I just get another new error.
When I start up my laptop, the screen immediatly says Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windowssystem32configsystem You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. The deal is I dont have the cd. IF someone could tell me how to get an xp cd (without buying) that'd be great.
Acer laptop (TravelMate 4020) that operates using Windows XP. When I started up my computer the other day, I received the following message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:WindowsSystem32ConfigSystem You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows setup and using the original setup CD-rom. Select 'r' at first screen to start repair."
PC wont boot up any more , it says there could be a currupt or missing file , it says its config system and says it might be able to repair the file using the install disc. i have a System Recovery CD-ROM
I have just installed some anti virus software and during installation I got messages saying my registry had been damaged and i should log onto such-and-such site to download repair software and run it on my system. I am suspicious that if I do this I am exposing myself to total destruction. One of the messages has just popped up again and the site it directs me to is FixReg32.com.
Problems started was when i updated my Zone Alarm firewall, windows works absolutely fine no problems what so ever, then next time i reboot it does the same, this time problems are non-stop until about 10% then fine from there on in, then when it finishes repairing the drive it gets stuck at repairing unreadable security descriptions date stream.
It also said whilst recovering orphaned files insufficient disk space to recover lost files. It stopped for a while then carried on. After scan disk it restarted and wouldn't load windows, just got stuck on windows loading screen forever, eventually 15+ minutes i pressed reset as there was no disk activity.
I just ran across this problem on a computer and can't figure out how to fix it. When I start Notepad it starts up minimized on the taskbar and will not come up no matter what I try which isn't much. I just stays minimized. I can right click it and get Maximize, Restore etc. but it just stays there.
my computer's desktop shows shortcut as the type of file and when i click on icon to open program, it opens in notepad and the page or program is in symbols. It says this program can not open in DOS mode. How do i get it back to its original state. I have no CD or back up files to access.
None of the word processors on my computer, save notepad, work at all. When I double click the application, it shows the hourglass for a split second, and it disappears again, as if I'd never clicked anything. Actually, MS word worked. Except it always had some random error and just exited itself. So as far as I'm concerned, I can't use any of my word processors.I ran a CHKDSK scan, it took several hours to complete, but I did it, and the problem persisted. So I decided to get a HJT log. I downloaded HJT.
Well my problem is i use my mp3 player to carry around my school work. This was fine until today when it decided to screw me over. NOw the problem is i have a folder full of filemaker and PDF files inside it. The folder has now from what ive seen to be no apparant reason it has turned it into a "file". I dont no what it is inside the properties it just calls it a file. All the other files and folders inside my mp3 player are fine. After i had seen that this had happened to my folder i had noticed that there was a new notepad file called BOOTEX. inside this file was
I was hijacked, cleaned everything out and got my browser up and running again. Now, in a bizarre twist, every single app i have automatically opens with Notepad. Everything--even RUN--opens with notepad. Yahoo, Run, Norton, all antispy programs, turbo tax, you name it.When I boot up, instead of having a bunch of programs load and sit on my toolbar, i just get 10 Notepad windows of spaghetti. Hence, even run commands are not going to cut it.
I have Windows XP on my computer. Does anyone know the web site of a free word processor or something similar to Microsofts Notepad? Thank you. user470
I am no longer able to save notepad text documents to the desktop. They just disappear. When I try to resave them there I am told they already exist on the desktop, but I cannot acess them and they do not appear in the desktop contents list in My Computer. The desktop is not overcrowded - there is space for new icons.
I have been having a problem forwarding attachments with Pics. The window comes up note pad with many many lines of junk. I have tried all I know which isn't much to over come this problem. Any assistancs would be appreciated. Also can't recieve some attached pics also.
I'm running WinXP/SP2. All of a sudden, every time I try to open a JPG file all I get is a notepad with gobbledegook. What has happened, and how do I fix it? I can open any other type of photo or video with no problems.
in my "C" drive folder entitled "Oscar" and when I open it all it say's inside is "Oscar Was Here" Now who the heck is Oscar and what is this, have I been hacked at?
Having a problem with booting into safe mode on my SONY WinXP Pro computer, I searched on the internet for a solution....This opens the boot.ini file in Notepad.
- One line should end with "/fastdetect" (NOT "/fastdetect /sos"). Copy that line. - Paste the line you just copied below the original line. Change "WINDOWS=Microsoft XP Professional" to "WINDOWS="Safe Mode" and add the following text to the end of the line: /safeboot:minimal /sos /bootlog - Save the file and click OK to exit the dialog boxes. Note: If you named the Windows XP installation folder something other than WINDOWS when you installed XP, that name will appear instead of WINDOWS in step 6.
Before following the instructions, I created a backup copy of my boot.ini file. I then proceeded to do as instructed. Unfortunately, I needed access to the internet which this didn't allow for. I then copied the origional boot.ini information back to my boot.ini file in Notepad and saved it. However, when I boot, it still goes into the basic Safe Mode.
For whatever reason Notepad has started freezing whenever I try to save a document. This is incredible annoying as it's my favorite note writing program. Wordpad scrambles anything thats pasted into it. Control panel/add remove programs/Windows components doesn'twork. As Notepad is not listed in the accessories folder, even though it appears that way in program files/accessories. So, how can I fix this?
I'm having the same issue at my work place that ScubaGirl had posted,so far four of our users have put in calls for it.ScubaGirl's post read: Clicking mapped /network drives opens minesweeper For some reason on my XP machine, it recently started opening minesweeper when I try to click on a network or mapped drive (and won't open the mapped drive). I've tried dropping and reconnecting - and it's still doing it.
Can someone tell me why, when I open a notepad file, whether from notepad or from Start Documents or what have you, I always get an error message: "Windows cannot find [file locationfilename.txt]. Make sure you type the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search." However, the file does open in notepad behind this error message and I am able to view it, edit it, etc.
I would like this error message not to appear every time (it is really just an annoyance to cancel it every time but after a couple of years I am tired of it) so I tried to find this answer in the archives but to no avail. However, I saw that it was recommended by more than one tech guy (or gal) to save a "hijack this" file in notepad, so I followed the instructions and did that just after my latest error message... The "hijack this" copy of the notepad file follows, and if you see anything else that I should make note of please let me know....
Every time I right click on a file and chose open with then choose program it always, with out fail, no matter what the extension, assumes I mean notepad.exe. AVIs to Zip files get Notepad. I suspect a registry entry but I don't know where to look and Google failed to find anything close to what i was looking for. The problem first occurred with my HOSTS file. I typed the c:windowssystem32driversetchosts into my run and instead of the Choose program it immediately opened in notepad, convenient in that instances but not the majority of the time...
I have checked for Spyware (clean), run AVG (clean), and I am very reluctant to reinstall windows, again. Last time they tried to force me to purchase a new copy of windows pro after installing it and activating it on the SAME system (not this computer) for the third time. They wanted to know when/where/ and what model I purchased.
I've reinstalled XP and some icons are missing from the "Start"/"all programs" menu. Both Outlook Express and Internet Explorer are missing. I was able to locate them using "search" then open and pin to start menu. (The search function displays i.e. shortcuts for "administrator", "guest" and the other user, but not for me. The icons do display on the "all programs" list for the other user). Any suggestions as to how to get them back on the "all programs" menu?
