I'm running WinXP/SP2. All of a sudden, every time I try to open a JPG file all I get is a notepad with gobbledegook. What has happened, and how do I fix it?
I can open any other type of photo or video with no problems.
I have been having a problem forwarding attachments with Pics. The window comes up note pad with many many lines of junk. I have tried all I know which isn't much to over come this problem. Any assistancs would be appreciated. Also can't recieve some attached pics also.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWord and Notepad are very slow to open. Other heavy programs behave more reasonably. HD was defragmented.
Every time I right click on a file and chose open with then choose program it always, with out fail, no matter what the extension,assumes I mean notepad.exe. AVIs to Zip files get Notepad. I suspect a registry entry but I don't know where to look and Google failed to find anything close to what i was looking for. The problem first occurred with my HOSTS file. I typed the c:windowssystem32driversetchosts into my run and instead of the Choose program it immediately opened in notepad, convenient in that instances but not the majority of the time...
I have checked for Spyware (clean), run AVG (clean), and I am very reluctant to reinstall windows, again. Last time they tried to force me to purchase a new copy of windows pro after installing it and activating it on the SAME system (not this computer) for the third time. They wanted to know when/where/ and what model I purchased.
my computer's desktop shows shortcut as the type of file and when i click on icon to open program, it opens in notepad and the page or program is in symbols. It says this program can not open in DOS mode. How do i get it back to its original state. I have no CD or back up files to access.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThere seems to be a problem with the My Pictures folder located in My Documents. whenever i open it,a windows explorer popup screen says there's an error with explorer..."Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." My Pictures cannot also be used with any other application,eg.setting up Avatars or when creating a DVD title menu(as in using a background display picture). Since I use ZoneAlarm whenever i open the my pictures folder a program alert appears saying windows explorer is trying to communicate with vsmon.exe...on clicking deny the explorer error pops up. I tried copying the pictures in the folder to an empty hard drive partition but instead the hard drive partition stopped working...i.e. the same explorer error popped up,making the partition inaccessible.
I then had to format the partition.
Some pictures on websites wont open and there is only a X in a
small box. What settings have I got wrong?
The settings in my folder options have been changed. If i left click any file it comes up wth access denied.. However if i right click and go to open then the file will open. The problem was caused by going Tools>folder options> file types.... file folder and folder have been changed on the advanced button..also AudioCD file has been changed.

It's redundancy not to my liking to have My Pictures and My Music folders within My Documents folder, and to have My Pictures and My Music icons on the Start Menu; which lead to the same folders.
Is there a way to delete My Pictures and My Music folders within My Documents folder, while still retaining their Start Menu functionality?
I installed Adobe Acrobat about 2-3 weeks ago as part of a CreativeSuite package. I have yet to use it. However, just last night, when I tried to open a folder full of pictures on my desktop, for some reason, it attempted to install Adobe Acrobat. I cancelled the installation (acrobat was already installed) and the folder opened. I've tried some experiments now and it seems like every time I try to open a REGULAR FOLDER or a COMPRESSED FOLDER (ARCHIVE) ... ON MY DESKTOP ONLY, my computer attempts to install adobe acrobat. When I hit cancel the folder finally opens. I haven't waited to see what would happen if I let the computer install it cause I just spent hours cleaning my hard drive so my windows installation is sparkling and I don't want to mess that up w/ 2 copies of acrobat.

In the past few days, all of my jpg files in My Pictures have suddenly shown up on Display Properties-Desktop (in other words, instead of just the desktop background pictures that came with my Dell pc, suddenly all my personal pics are in the desktop backgrounds scroll list as well). How do I keep my jpgs, but eliminate them from the desktop backgrounds scroll list? (Display Properties-Desktop takes a looong tme to open now, because there are so many files in it). All are Windows XP SP2 fully updated. But Computer #1 is Media Center Edition. Neither computer is password protected.When move PICTURES I then cannot view, move, copy or delete them. When moved/copied from camera, they are OK until I move them again. (It was before the format).I have typed in "Export Pictures from CD to My Pictures folder" without the quotes and I get a list of links pertaining to CD recording errors and other things like that. I did right click on a picture in Drive E (my CD-RW) just to see what would come up and I noticed that on the Send To menu that these pictures can be sent to the desktop.

It does not matter whether I right click on a certain file and choose open with or if I use the tools option in the folder menu. This is what happens. I want to open a .jpg file with picassa photo viewer. I right click the .jpg file and choose open with. I then click browse to locate the .exe file that will open it. Well once I click it I get sent back to the open with window and nothing has changed. The .jpg file will not open with any program that can open it and it will not add the .exe file into the window. This is a bit frustrating as I cannot change what opens certain windows files by default. This goes for any type of file I try to open with any program.

View 14 Replies View RelatedSometime over the past couple of weeks, I started having a number of files on my C:/ drive which would not open. I wrote another forum and got some advice, and did some studying, and for some I was able to take back permissions and found what looked like a phony user account hidden way down in Documents and Settings.
Today I found close to 2/3 of my files would not display, of the types, htm and html, jpg, png, and doc files. I went to check permissions and the security tab was not under Properties.
I have tried everything: I have re-installed Windows, I have run every virus and adware and spyware scan and repair known, and have constantly cleaned the registry and used HiJack this which did show two programs called Voodoo and Banshee which were not mine.
Tonight I tried opening a chm file and it failed, with that error message. This happens for any chm file I have tried. I don't know when this broke, I know I used to be able to open chm files with no trouble but I can't pinpoint the last time it worked.I've searched around and found some references to this, but no solution -the only relevant MSKB is for Win98. I tried regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx, deleting the hh.dat files, clearing IE's file cache; nothing has helped. I haven't made any significant recent changed to the system that I can think of.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have taken a series of pictures on different days and downloaded them into a folder in My Pictures. I need to put them in a sequence so I right clicked each picture and re-named it as follows: 001jpg, 002jpg and so on for 100 pictures. In view, I selected arrange icons by modified and all the pictures moved to the sequence I wanted. All is well and good until I copied the folder to a CD. All the pictures reverted to their original sequence instead of the sequence I put them in.
How can I copy the folder with the pictures in the sequence I put them in? Whenever I open the picture file to look at that folder, they are always in the sequnce I put them in
Notepad has gone missing, the computer is running sluggishly (I have checked for viruses, Spyware ect and run defrag) and desite loads of earlier dates System Restore goes through the motions and then tells me that it is not possible to restore to any of them. I am guessing that my windows Xp is corrupted. Because i dont want the hassle of re-loading all my other programs and files, is there a safe way to repair windows Xp rather than completely reinstalling it?

When I start Notepad it starts up minimized on the taskbar and will not come up no matter what I try which isn't much. I just stays minimized.
