At startup Windows XP always suggested to run disk check and after I let it the whole partirion(most of it) is unreadable. The files are there but they are simply unreadable. For instance, I cannot open pictures or open MP3s. Like the content of the files has been messes up
View 2 RepliesSometimes a website allows you only to play an MP3 file, not to save it. During playing WMP will say x% downloaded. Play the entire mp3 or wait for the download indicator to reach 100%.

View 9 Replies View RelatedA week after updating to most current Windows SP1critical updates (its only change I can think of) I happen to notice that I cannot run a disk error check, I am told that its a NTFS file system and Win cannot open volume for check. Also when I start computer I have to log on with my password every. I have tried to eliminate the password requirement to no avail. I cannot return to pre-update status with System Restore because its been a week and there is too much new data in the system. This is a free standing desktop PC. Can anyone help with these two things? I hope so as I do my error check regularly and find it frustrating to have to log on every time I restart .
View 8 Replies View Relatedwhen i run chdisk for errors in win 2000 by right clicking the hard drive icon and then clicking properties of c: harddrive, then tools tab, then click the check now button, and in the check disk options ticking "automatically fix file system errors" and clicking ok I get this message "The disk check could not be performed because exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer."If i chose yes to that above it performs the diskcheck at reboot and when windows loads i go back to the checkdisk and i get the same problem again.

I can open any other type of photo or video with no problems.
For the past two weeks, when I start or restart my Dell Dimension 8250 running Windows XP Home Edition, it passes through a blue page with a Windows label that says: "Checking the file system on C; The type of file is NTFS; Cannot open volume for direct access; Windows has finished checking the disk." Otherwise the computer seems to start up normally and operate as usual. Something has changed and I don't know what the problem may be.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just reformated my computer. i have 2 hard drives. one which stores all my system files, os etc. and onther which i use just for storage. When i restarted my computer for the first time since reformating i had a message sayinf somthing alng the lines of: "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue."i wasnt at my computer so it decided to go ahead and do it anyway. by the time i got to my computer and turned it off, booted it back up and avoided the dick check again on start up it had already deleted 20 gigs of my music files. It was saying somthing about orphened files when it was running through deleting everything from image files to mp3s. please let me know if there is a way to resotr my deleted files or find out exactly what was deleted.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP Homedition. I have two drives inside, the regular C: drive and I have a Slave drive F: with all my photos and music and documents. The problem I'm having is that everytime I restart or reboot my system it say it needs to check F: drive for consistency. It haven't been doing that until now. Then once it goes through that the system comes up. I try to click on an icon like my internet or registry program, nothing comes up, its like a read only file or something. Its not executing the program. THEN all of a sudden I get a blue screen. It says this::"Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacture for driver updates. try changing video adapters. "Check with your hardware vendor for aany BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use SAFE mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advance SStartup options, and then select Safe Mode."
View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my server, basically all I kept was the two hard drives from the old machine. The one hard drive is for the system files (~13GB) and the other is for storage, user files, etc (~160GB). I figured that then I reinstalled Windows 2000 Server on the System disk, I would just have to assign the other disk a drive letter and be on my way. Instead, in the disk management console, I get "Disk 1 [the 160GB) Dynamic Unreadable" I can revert to a basic disk, but it says I will lose all my information. It is imperative that the data on this disk be recovered.

Please check your installation diskette" in a box with a red cross in it in the centre of the screen.And from a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it from the toolbar at the bottom a bubble saying "the file or directory WINDOWSSystem32URLMON.DLL is corrupt and unreadable. View 8 Replies View RelatedThe drive in question is a dynamic data disk, not my system drive. I had reason to re-install windows onto my system drive. Before I did that I checked to make sure that the data drive, which is formatted as an NTFS drive, and is a dynamic disk, was intact and functioning ok. With XP installed on the system drive I went to look for the data drive in explorer (have done this procedure on many occasions without problems) and could not see the drive. Go to administrative tools and I see a message that says the drive is unreadable.

The second disk is installed using NTFS dynamic disk. Last weekedend I formated the XP disk, and installed XP again. After installing, the second disk comes up as "unreadable" dynamic disk. Is there a way to make it readable? I haven't done anything to it, so all the data should be there.

after waking my computer up from screen saver and trying to minimize an internet explorer, everything froze. I restarted it by reset switch, and an "NTLDR missing" message came. I started windows by recovery console and I was able to log on to my windows installation (I did nothing, because i have forgotten how to replace NTLDR!). I checked the connection IDE cable to my primary ATA hard drive (disk 0) and the message didn't appear again. Windows started and just before displaying welcome screen "the blue crash screen" came up and computer restarted automatically. I was not able to read the error message because I saw the blue screen just as a splash! I tried recovery console again and it did not recognize my windows installation. then i tried to install windows again. there were 4 drive available.....
I recently got a new computer with Win XP. I had backed up all my files on floppy disk, and then transferred those to a CD. When I try to access the files on my new computer, they are all in computer language. Can anyone tell me what I should do to be able to access files in English?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Windows xp pro on an IBM Think Center. I can receive, download and print a large file using Outlook Express. If I then try to forward this file, either the recipient gets it but is unable to open it or it is scrambled and unreadible... OR... the recipient never recieves it and then I receive 2 or 3 emails (depending on the size of the file) stating FROM: "mail delivery system" and SUBJECT: "delivery status notification". I AM able to upload or forward small files of say 2 or 3 pages without a problem. I've tried to find some setting that I could change but have be unsuccessful.

When i plugged into the USB of my XP laptop and double clicked the drive in My Computer the following error message appeared: D: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable. View 8 Replies View RelatedMy Compaq Presario 7470 was on its last legs (error messages, blue Fatal Expressions, cutting out and starting over) when I retrieved as many files as I could on compressed cds (Ce Quadrat Packet) before Windows Explorer stopped letting me access. I now have an eMachines T6410 with Windows XP and I can't open these files to read them nor copy them to my present system. eMachines suggests connecting the old pc to this via cable and accessing in that manner, but, I did a Restore on the old one before the monitor went completely blank so there's nothing to access. Surely there must be somebody out there who has had a similar situation, transferring backups that were created in Windows 98SE and compressed and now need to be accessed and copied on Windows XP! PLEASE HELP! (My 5-year collection of music is on these cds!)
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor a whole month now I have carefully set up the new notebook described below after successfully, but laboriously, running a 1997 Dell PII300-SCSI 128-SDRAM Win98SE system for 8 years. I've now reached a point where I need help on several issues from some of you who are far ahead of me when it comes to running a modern system. There are no major problems so far, just some minor performance issues and a few questions in areas in which I know little or nothing.
One instance of a freeze (when running Norton Speed Disk) which turned out to be a bad cluster and was repaired by ChkDsk. One instance of stalling @ the "windows is shutting down" window (shutdown only). There have been two instances of noticeable decline in peak performance: A.) after installing Norton System Works. I immediately uninstalled Go Back, which really helped, and B.) after replacing one of the installed 256mb sticks of RAM with a 1GB stick from Crucial. I only mention this because I deliberately delayed installation until maximium system performance had been consistently sustained. [This is nothing major, just a slight delay and/or menus briefly going blank when starting some programs and a slight delay in application reaction time, which usually manifests itself at the start of sessions, and late sluggishness in long sessions] I only mention this in the event that I'm wrong and can be corrected, because I believe this must be a coincidence and not due to the hardware (unless there is a setting or something in Windows that needs changing to accommodate the additional RAM) - and the solution to regaining peak performance lies in Windows and/or Norton System Works....

I have ran in yet another problem... a BIG problem. My 300 GB Maxxtor Hard Drive now lists as Dynamic Unreadable... I am now trying to find a way to recover my files... I am running a PC Inspector File Recovery Scan and then will be a recovermyfiles Scan. Was wondering if anyone has other ideas to fix this/get the files.

I always have errors reported on my hard drive, even after chkdsk /f and /f/r."Freespace marked as allocated in the volume bitmap". Why does it never go away? Windows XP Pro with all of the updates. Machine runs fine.

View 4 Replies View Relatedso what i did was scan for and attempt of bad sectors, when it was done i restarted the computer, then a blue screen pop up reading and checking for errors the last time i check it was on 33% so i was just sitting watching tv and all of the sudden my power for the whole house went out for about couple of min then when i turn on the computer, i tells me if i want to reboot in safe mode or normal, so i pick normal(tried safe mode also same thing happened) when it start loading a blue screen pop up saying A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen apperas again follow these steps Disable or uninstall ant anti-virus, disck defragmentation or back up utilities. Check your hard drive fongiuration, and check for any updated drives. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThere seems to be a problem with the My Pictures folder located in My Documents. whenever i open it,a windows explorer popup screen says there's an error with explorer..."Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." My Pictures cannot also be used with any other application,eg.setting up Avatars or when creating a DVD title menu(as in using a background display picture). Since I use ZoneAlarm whenever i open the my pictures folder a program alert appears saying windows explorer is trying to communicate with vsmon.exe...on clicking deny the explorer error pops up. I tried copying the pictures in the folder to an empty hard drive partition but instead the hard drive partition stopped working...i.e. the same explorer error popped up,making the partition inaccessible.
I then had to format the partition.
i've been having slow computer problems. lots of generic host errors and some programs that would hang and freeze the computer. i went to the Security area of this site for help. i had no major problems just a lot of startup programs i didn't need.i downloaded two programs to help me with that. then i decided to run defrag. that froze at 3% done. i also tried check disk, i got the screen to restart the computer. it was running fine. i had lots of bad sector stuff in stage 4. i went to bed at 24% next morning it still was at 24%. we left it on and it still would not move. so we restarted. i went and did a few more things, deleting things i no longer wanted and so on. last night i tried check disk again and i went to bed at 20% (tired). this morning there were no bad sector items, but it was still at 20%. i gave it a bit longer, but still nothing.

The last error that came up, said that I did not have a valid copy of xp and would not let me login to the PC. I even tried to login in safe mode, but that did not work.
