I recently got a new computer with Win XP. I had backed up all my files on floppy disk, and then transferred those to a CD. When I try to access the files on my new computer, they are all in computer language. Can anyone tell me what I should do to be able to access files in English?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my server, basically all I kept was the two hard drives from the old machine. The one hard drive is for the system files (~13GB) and the other is for storage, user files, etc (~160GB). I figured that then I reinstalled Windows 2000 Server on the System disk, I would just have to assign the other disk a drive letter and be on my way. Instead, in the disk management console, I get "Disk 1 [the 160GB) Dynamic Unreadable" I can revert to a basic disk, but it says I will lose all my information. It is imperative that the data on this disk be recovered.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe drive in question is a dynamic data disk, not my system drive. I had reason to re-install windows onto my system drive. Before I did that I checked to make sure that the data drive, which is formatted as an NTFS drive, and is a dynamic disk, was intact and functioning ok. With XP installed on the system drive I went to look for the data drive in explorer (have done this procedure on many occasions without problems) and could not see the drive. Go to administrative tools and I see a message that says the drive is unreadable.

The second disk is installed using NTFS dynamic disk. Last weekedend I formated the XP disk, and installed XP again. After installing, the second disk comes up as "unreadable" dynamic disk. Is there a way to make it readable? I haven't done anything to it, so all the data should be there.

after waking my computer up from screen saver and trying to minimize an internet explorer, everything froze. I restarted it by reset switch, and an "NTLDR missing" message came. I started windows by recovery console and I was able to log on to my windows installation (I did nothing, because i have forgotten how to replace NTLDR!). I checked the connection IDE cable to my primary ATA hard drive (disk 0) and the message didn't appear again. Windows started and just before displaying welcome screen "the blue crash screen" came up and computer restarted automatically. I was not able to read the error message because I saw the blue screen just as a splash! I tried recovery console again and it did not recognize my windows installation. then i tried to install windows again. there were 4 drive available.....
My 500GB External HDD is not accessible anymore. It was working yesterday when i used it with windows 7. It automatically ran the disk check on that system and it worked. When i plugged into the USB of my XP laptop and double clicked the drive in My Computer the following error message appeared: D: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable. The drive letter shows on My Computer and Disk Management.

I remembered that the Dell did not come with a Windows XP install disc in case I need to re-format. Is this normal? There is an option under Start....Accessories....System Tools to create OS backup disc. Is that what I need to make a disc or should it have came with one?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI used the backup utility that comes with XPPro/(i am running sp2) and used the wizard process.I chose the one that says you will be prompted to make a floppy once the back-up is done.The back up is done(i copied the whole of "C" drive onto another drive on my machine) but there was no prompt to make a floppy.I guess i have two questions..
1. what happened to the prompt, how do i get the wizarfd to work etc etc
2. to make my own floppy, what files should i put on it?

My original setup was as follows:400GB SATA HDD with Windows XP as the Operating System plus Data - Single Partition - NTFS. 300GB SATA HDD with purely data - Single Partition - NTFS.I bought a new HDD today (SATA 320GB) and installed it in the PC. The original XP install saw it was installed and offered formatting options from Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management - no formatting options were taken.I then installed Windows XP (non-SP2 install, SP2 has been installed afterwards along with Video Card and Motherboard drivers) to the new HDD without removing the old drives first.

I told XP to use the CHKDSK utility on startup, but whenever it reaches step 4 37%, it just freezes and I'm forced to restart the computer. When I restart, the same thing happens. Is there any shortcut to bypass the CHKDSK? This all started because whenever I ran a full virus scan or spyware scan I would get a BSOD In_Page_Kernel_Error... So i tried running them in safe mode and then I would get a IQL BSOD. Eventually I decided I should try to run CHKDSK and it has lead me to this dead end. If I could just figure out a shortcut to bypass it, I would be happy because the computer actually works fine, I just suspected spyware so that's why I began attempting to disinfect it.

To continue setup, you need the correct Windows 2000 compatible driver disk." The problem seems to be with my Intel 82371AB/EB IDE controller. Does anyone know if a Windows 2000 driver exists for this and, if, so, where I can get it? Iv'e scoured the Web to no avail.

View 6 Replies View RelatedHP Pavillion 8485Z.I've tried a couple of different things here.When upgrading from a plain disk (no OS) or when booting from the XP upgrade CD (with or without OS). The application loads some stuff and then proclaims "Setup is starting windows" and there it sits forever.When launching it from the system with Win98 installed, it tells me that the CD is for upgrade only (in spite of what the written instructions say) and that it can't install because it can't find C:WindowsWINNT32Win9xUPGW95UPG.DLL. Never mind that Win98 doesn't have a WINNT directory.So what's the next step? Do I create this directory and attempt to find the DLL and copy it to it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was told I could take a hard drive from a windows 98 computer and the person is buying a new Windows xp so I can hook up the win 98 hard drive as a slave to the new computer with win xp so I can drop and drag or cut and past files that they want off the 98 hard drive put on their new computer. Now If their new computer with the win xp on it, if there is an ide cable going to the hard drive and nothing else then I can hook up the win 98 hard drive to the same ide cable as a slave and no problem.
However if the windows xp computer has the hard drive on the ide cable and also the cd-rom then is it ok just to hook up another ide cable to their mother board and hook the hard drive from the windows 98 computer on the end of that ide cable as the master? and by turning the computer off, and then hooking up the hard drive and then turning the computer back on it should reconize the windows 98 hard drive in my computer right away right?
If I would have to put the windows 98 hard drive in the new computer on a seperate ide cable is it ok to have it as master? cause the hard drive that is already in it would be master to but it would be on a different ide cable. I am hoping the new computer just has the hard drive on an ide cable by itself so I can just hook the other one up as a slave and get the files and be done with it. How ever if someone could give me a couple or three scenario's with ide cables and hooking this up I would be very much appreciatetive.
a lack of permission for filesharing/or computer sharing from XP laptop:Maybe it is simple but I have spent many hours trying uselessly.I am new to XP and have searched everywhere I can try - (tho' as these are French versions, maybe I am missing something obvious. so in replies, please be extra clear in stating exactly what steps I must take.
1) Networked 2 laptops: a win98SE and winXP Home Edition +SP2, using TCP/IP
2) Both have filesharing enabled,etc, both 'ping' to router and to each other
3) the XP can open, read, write, etc to the win98 - no access problems at all.
4) the win98 can ping and 'see' the named XP computer itself, but cannot 'see' any of its files:
5) Not a firewall problem: tried with firewalls off (Zonealarm) and checked winXP firewall off.
6) Not a router problem: Same situation as above with a direct connection of crossover cable.
7) Netbios is enabled on the XP
8) It is apparently 'just' a permission problem within the XP
(1) When I start up my computer, I get a menu asking me to choose from either (a) Continuing to install XP or (b) Use 98. I don't want this menu, I just want to go straight to 98.
(2) When I choose the option to go to Windows 98, I get another menu (every time!) telling me to choose between NORMAL or SAFE MODE or a bunch of other options. I just always want to go into Windows 98 using NORMAL, I don't want to have to choose NORMAL every time.
(3) Once I get into Windows 98, I cannot shut it down without holding down the power button on the computer. If I choose the Shut Down option, it just restarts the computer. If I choose Restart it also restarts the computer. I can choose Standby and it will go into Standby mode, but I want to be able to shut down my computer.
(4) Internet Explorer is not displaying websites correctly. In addition other windows on the computer look funny. For example, all of the text on Yahoo's website looks too large, even though I set the text size to "Smallest". Also, if I open up any folder, the icons are all overlapping.
Win 98 / SE has a ScanReg.exe application, which on start-up picks up the 2 Registery files (System.Dat, User.Dat) plus 2 ini files (System.ini and Win.in) and compresses trhem as *.cab file - RBxxx.cab. The files are stored at WindowsSysBckUp folder. In case of improper shut-down or some just installed program cause problem, one can boot with F8 to command propmt and RESTORE the registery. Is there a similar functionality in Win XP - Professional or if not, any 3rd party software developer has created a software for that. Restore from Windows mode generally does not work and in case the registery is totally messed up, one does not have the running system, so the question of restoring the system, using SYSTEM RESTORE application does not arise.

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy Compaq Presario 7470 was on its last legs (error messages, blue Fatal Expressions, cutting out and starting over) when I retrieved as many files as I could on compressed cds (Ce Quadrat Packet) before Windows Explorer stopped letting me access. I now have an eMachines T6410 with Windows XP and I can't open these files to read them nor copy them to my present system. eMachines suggests connecting the old pc to this via cable and accessing in that manner, but, I did a Restore on the old one before the monitor went completely blank so there's nothing to access. Surely there must be somebody out there who has had a similar situation, transferring backups that were created in Windows 98SE and compressed and now need to be accessed and copied on Windows XP! PLEASE HELP! (My 5-year collection of music is on these cds!)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently reinstalled Windows XP Home w/SP2 on a system and everything worked well. I also installed a Seagate 500 GB HDD as a slave drive. I had no problems assigning a drive letter (D:) and mapping it as a network drive. Then yesterday, a Windows error message popped up saying there was "Delayed Write Failure" or something similar. It was at that point the the slave drive became inaccessible. I can still see the drive in My Computer but that is all. I went into disk management and click on properties, it says the file system is "RAW". I have no idea what that means.
The drive is still assigning a drive letter (d:) and it says is it is healthy (active). However, when I try exploring the drive it says "D: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable"." I then tried using CHKDSK to check the drive for errors in the DOS prompt. But again, nothing happened. I used Seagate Diagnostic tools to scan the drive for errors. There is nothing physically wrong with the drive as it passed all the tests except for the file structure test.
File or Directory C:$MFT is corrupt or unreadable. Run CHKDSK /f.Got this message on a WinXP Home SP2 box. I can't run chkdsk /f because I'm using the disk (obviously) When I reboot however, the system does it's own chkdsk but doesn't find any errors. The message keeps coming back. search the KB.
