Recovering Data Back From NTFS Hard Disk?
Sep 16, 2006I am having a problem with my 400GB HDD not displaying correctly - it displays as 127GB - in a new install of Windows XP on a seperate drive. My original setup was as follows:400GB SATA HDD with Windows XP as the Operating System plus Data - Single Partition - NTFS. 300GB SATA HDD with purely data - Single Partition - NTFS.I bought a new HDD today (SATA 320GB) and installed it in the PC. The original XP install saw it was installed and offered formatting options from Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management - no formatting options were taken.I then installed Windows XP (non-SP2 install, SP2 has been installed afterwards along with Video Card and Motherboard drivers) to the new HDD without removing the old drives first.

Apr 29, 2008I've started having constant Windows Explorer crashes lately. It usually happens after I have a directory window open on the desktop and then close it. Unfortunately, it often freezes Dr. Watson with it, and my PC becomes unresponsive until I enter the Task Manager and kill both instances of Dr. Watson that is showing. What sort of things affect Windows Explorer? If there is something corrupt, is there a chance that if I install SP3 it will fix it?

Sep 4, 2005I can recovering my data from a hard drive I've recently corrupted . Whilst in the process of moving/renaming partitions I've managed to corrupt my harddrive which contains an xp operating system, four partitions and 150 gigabytes of movies etc. I've now installed xp on my other drive but it wont recognise the other one. Infact its not recognising the other disc or its patitions at all, even thru windows recovery 'chkdsk' where it just says disk it unformatted. Norton disc doctor at least recognised the disc as corrupted (and unformatted) and declares a bad partion table but is unable to fix it. Well since then I've changed the h.d, motherboard, and a few other things and installed a fresh copy of windows on the alternate h.d. well with the first h.d set as a slave and no means of going back to my original setup because i deleted most of everything on the h.d except a few folders it won't give me access to those folders. Aug 5, 2007I have an EXTERNAL HD. I formatted it in FAT a few months ago. Ever since then, my laptop PC was unable to recognize the unit, but the Mac (which is not working right now, unfortunately) never had a problem with it. When I connect it to my laptop PC via USB, the USB icon shows up and the "USB Mass Storage Device Properties" says the "device is working properly." But the folder doesn't show up in My Computer, and diskmgmt.msc says the device is "Unallocated." Hopefully that doesn't mean the unit crashed because I have some stuff on there.Without losing the data (that should be on it, unless it crashed), I want to convert this thing to NTFS. I did some Google searching, but the instructions on how to do this (they say use convert.exe) aren't working. Moreover, no one mentioned how to convert an External, secondary HD.

Mar 24, 2006I was forced to rebuild my XP OS on my main/primary hard drive a few days ago, but I "apparently lost" something incredably Precious to me...and Really need some skilled advice, I have 2 hard drives on my computer. Both were partitioned into 2 "drives" each, for a number of reasons. My primary HD had my "old" XP OS on it, and now has my fresh install of XP Pro on it. I used PartitionMagic to merge the 2 drive partitions on that primary HD into one to simplify my system. My slave(2nd)HD only had data on it, in 2 partition drives. Since merging the 2 partitions of my primary HD had gone so successfully(losing nothing in my newly installed XP OS, I decided to also merge my slave(2nd)HD data partitions into one.
Here is the problem. In the process of merging the data HD partitions, it apparently made my computer not recognise that I even have a secondary/slave HD in the My Computer panel....and a "Search" in my Start Menu can not find any of the precious important "data" that was on one of those partitions. What I am missing now, and possibly have lost are many, many Gigs of home movie video and precious moments of my 4 children over 17 yrs growing up from birth to high school. This is(would)be a Huge Lose!! and I am devistated at my stupidity for not burning them to DVD before messing with the partition that contained them. But PM is supposed to, and did, not affect the data when merging my partitioned primary HD, so I thought I'd be safe with the 2nd HD too.
But the weird thing is that even though My Computer and system searchs show NO 2nd HD, or video data......the PartitionMagic program still shows them to exist. PM shows one near 60 Gig C: drive having my OS and a few programs....AND another near 60 Gig "D: drive" with about 27Gig of data on it(which are the family videos). Can someone skilled on this forum, or other areas PLEASE tell me How to get my computer to recognise my 2nd HD D:, and be able to access all it's content video, etc. on it? (unfortunately, I'm at work now and not at that home computer, but Very Much Need to start getting skilled advise about what to do as Soon as I get home to get those precious movies of my kids growing up back again)

Jul 24, 2006i got somethin that is called ''A delayed writing failed''(my translation?) at E: S(with dollar tag over S)mft chkdsk manage to repair and delete the bad filepost-segement so i could acces the drive again. but now the problem is thath around 150 Gb of files has instead got hidden on the drive and can't be directley accesed with windows explorer..the files are recovered by chkdsk and the files works
however I can acces thoose files with Nero Burning Room LOL and R-Studio Data Recovery for example.first i tryed to copy thoose files to another hardrive with R-studio and back to orginal harddrive. the problem is that thoose hidden 150 Gb:s is still left on the drive.so my discspace is insufficient to succed to copy them back

Aug 30, 2005I'm using XP home and just added my old ntfs disk to my system. I can't access certain files because of a, "access denied", error message. The disk has tons of bad sectors on it and I can't take it with me into safe mode so I can take ownership of it with the admin account. Any suggestions on how to get to my ntfs files without going into safe mode? In normal mode, I don't have an administrator account, just my account with my name which has administrator rights. I know the admin account is still there, but I can't get into safe mode with the ntfs disk.

Feb 24, 2010I'm trying to reformat an Acer Laptop 120GB hard drive that had problems before with VISTA so I'm using my copy of Win XP Pro, (I own the Volume disk, and have used it several times with no problems). When I try and do a reformat it hangs at 80%.I've used MEMtest86, no erorrs, I've tried Ultimate bootCD, no probs, I've tried SystemRescueCD, no help. I ran CHKDSK from a DOS prompt no problems. I ws going to replace the MBR but it says that I might not be able to access my drive if it doesn't work...is that true ?Right now I'm trying a MS-DOS FORMAT from a command prompt and its taking forever. After 20 minutes its only at 1%.

The fee space indicated by windows explorer indicates I have 19GB but when I add all the directory sizes together it only comes to 90GB.
