Hard Disk Corrupt: Recovering Data ?
Sep 4, 2005I can recovering my data from a hard drive I've recently corrupted . Whilst in the process of moving/renaming partitions I've managed to corrupt my harddrive which contains an xp operating system, four partitions and 150 gigabytes of movies etc. I've now installed xp on my other drive but it wont recognise the other one. Infact its not recognising the other disc or its patitions at all, even thru windows recovery 'chkdsk' where it just says disk it unformatted. Norton disc doctor at least recognised the disc as corrupted (and unformatted) and declares a bad partion table but is unable to fix it. I think my data is probably lost for good and I'm going to have to reformat

Sep 16, 2006I am having a problem with my 400GB HDD not displaying correctly - it displays as 127GB - in a new install of Windows XP on a seperate drive. My original setup was as follows:400GB SATA HDD with Windows XP as the Operating System plus Data - Single Partition - NTFS. 300GB SATA HDD with purely data - Single Partition - NTFS.I bought a new HDD today (SATA 320GB) and installed it in the PC. The original XP install saw it was installed and offered formatting options from Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management - no formatting options were taken.I then installed Windows XP (non-SP2 install, SP2 has been installed afterwards along with Video Card and Motherboard drivers) to the new HDD without removing the old drives first.

Sep 2, 2007A year ago, I was having ME/XP opr sys problems and reformatted my HD. Being cute, I formatted into a 29 G section and an 8 G HD and put ME upgraded to XP in the 8 and all 'personal' and controllable programs into the 29G section "C". All photos and video are in the 29G section. The 29G section has 23G free. The 8G "D" has filled up (careless on loading software, etc). I have now deleted programs, looked for large files, emptied trash, etc to try to get back to Opr Sys files only (as best I can determine). No matter what I do the free space seems to shrink. Now 7.97 G. total, 472 M free. I have XP and 97? office. Except for deleted programs (I have the discs), everything seems to work, although slow.

Sep 1, 2008This probably isn't really a Windows question but I can't find a better place to put it.I'm trying to recover files from a Dell laptop that won't boot into Windows. I think the partition is corrupt but I don't know enough to say for sure. When I try to boot normally, it says "NTLDR is missing".When I use a Windows installation disk (as if I were going to install or repair Windows), and I get to the part where it asks me to choose a partition, it shows the partition as "C: Unknown" where the other partitions (from Dell) are FAT or FAT32. When I run Ubuntu off of a LiveCD, I can see a "52.1 GB Volume: disk", but when I try to open that it tells me "The folder contents could not be displayed". The DellRestore and DellUtility partitions can be browsed normally.

OS Damaged, Trying To Get Data Back?
Jan 23, 2007XP Pro had the OS go bad. It would only start to load and then say the needed files were damage or missing. I removed the hard drive and read it on another XP machine but could find no data (pictures) anywhere under Documents and Settings or anyplace else. So I reinstalled XP Pro to the c:windows directory and it works fine, but can still find no data. Is the data being hidden? How can I get it back?

The secondary machine, which was replaced by the primary some 8 months ago, is of much lesser spec but may have either a CD R/W or a Floppy Disk drive inserted into the media bay, but not both at the same time. Both machines are running Windows XP Professional SP2 with all updates and patches installed.

Well since then I've changed the h.d, motherboard, and a few other things and installed a fresh copy of windows on the alternate h.d. well with the first h.d set as a slave and no means of going back to my original setup because i deleted most of everything on the h.d except a few folders it won't give me access to those folders. Aug 5, 2007I have an EXTERNAL HD. I formatted it in FAT a few months ago. Ever since then, my laptop PC was unable to recognize the unit, but the Mac (which is not working right now, unfortunately) never had a problem with it. When I connect it to my laptop PC via USB, the USB icon shows up and the "USB Mass Storage Device Properties" says the "device is working properly." But the folder doesn't show up in My Computer, and diskmgmt.msc says the device is "Unallocated." Hopefully that doesn't mean the unit crashed because I have some stuff on there.Without losing the data (that should be on it, unless it crashed), I want to convert this thing to NTFS. I did some Google searching, but the instructions on how to do this (they say use convert.exe) aren't working. Moreover, no one mentioned how to convert an External, secondary HD.

Oct 15, 2009The way my recovery partition works on my netbook is when it was first used (I didnt not use it first) is it creates an image of the system when all the system has been setup then when ever I have to use the recovery it used that image to just overwirte and replace everything.I have access to the partition where the Recovery is stored and I have my Recovery Disk but as its a netbook I have no Drive, I can copy the disk files onto my Pen drive (if my pen drive is big enough)
I want to know if there is anyway I can change it so I can use the recovery and do it from scratch like when it was first turned on (first use) because there are setting there and other items that I want to change. If I could do it by editing the files in the partition that would be easier but I can try and use the disk if needs be?

Apr 25, 2006using BT client, when one of the shared files was "corrupt or missing" so she turned it off, and reset the computer.
When loaded again the entire drives files when accessed gave the message that the files were "corrupt". (The drive is secondary ide master).
She restarted again but then windows would not load, she called me, i entered safe mode but as it was loading it gave the option to not load sptd.sys, i found that windows would hang halfway through booting when this file was run so i opted to not load it and enter safe mode.
I found sptd.sys was part of daemon tools which may interfere with nero (both installed on her computer). so i disabled the file and booted into windows successfully.
The "coprrupt" drive had some data on it, but 120Gb worth had vanished. i ran scandisk which crashed, so i tried some file recovery software (stellar phoenix) but that only found a couple of directories with minimal data in it.
There is only about a gig worth of really irreplaceable data, which i would like to retreive, im pretty sure at this stage that all is pretty much lost.
Damaged Photo CD? / PC Shows Empty Disk
Feb 20, 2006Recently my son sent home 3 CDs with photos from his travels in South America.2 work fine, the third one cannot be read on my PC, however I can see the photos on my DVD (not computer) player. DVD lists 110 jpg files, 2 photos seem damaged and the slideshow gets stuck on them, but I can restart the slideshow from good photos. he sent many disks up to now, I burn CDs for photo storage on regular basis,this is the first time I experienced this kind of problem .
When I try to right click on the disk to open it in Explorer my PC shows empty disk. I tried to open the disk from different applications like ACDSee 5, copy the disk using Roxio Easy CD creator to no avail

Oct 3, 2005I think that the recovery disk that come with the computer is damaged in some way. When I reinstalled XP Home, since I bought a new motherboard, there would be files that couldn't be copied to the computer. Everytime I reinstalled it, there would be different files that would not copy.

finally, I hooked up a new Hitachi Hard Drive, and formatted it . . . and lo and behold I'm getting the same message.
It's possible the 3 older hard drives could have become damaged, but when the brand new Hitachi gives me the same message

If Hard Drive Is Damaged? / Correcting Error In Index
Jan 7, 2005I tried to reformat my hard drive. When it got to a certain point where it was checking the disk it got to 20% then hung or stopped. Did this three times. I have tried to run CHKDSK and have been unsuccessful. I get messages during the operation that say "file record segment is unreadable.
Once phase 1 is finished, I get messages that "correcting error in index" and replacing orphan files (or sometthing to tthat effect). Not long after that a message appears that says "an error has occured" and the computer continues to boot. Please note that my computer tries to run through CHKDSK everytime I boot. I want to reformat but it seems impossible.

Apr 14, 2007I just recently installed a new hard drive and uploaded windows xp professional. To my surprise I continue to get this box that pops up and says" Critical error message! Registry damaged and corrupted. To fix this problem: open IE and type www.registryxp.com Once you load the web page, close this message window. After you install the cleaner program you will not recieve any more reminders or pop ups like this one". I went to that page and it wants to charge me to sign up for a registry cleaner. This box pops up every 2 minutes or so . I've tried other registry cleaners and pop up blockers, spyware removal, deleting cookies, add/ remove programs, everything I can think of but to no avail. I know that it's hiding somewhere but I'm not too computer literate to go to far into my system without the proper help.

Jul 19, 2006My prob is a bit of a saga I defragged my Win XP Media PC a few days ago and then I noticed a clicking noise coming from the hard drive, I called PC servicecall managed to find a freephone number and the chap suggested I do a scandisk, he said to call back with the diagnosis later.
After the PC did two scandisks I managed to stop it when it was about to do a 3rd, I rebooted the PC and it loaded with no 'start' button or clock on the taskbar, so I rebooted. Then I got a message saying 'it can't load as a file was missing or corrupt windows/system32/configuration/system' it said to put in the original CD and type 'r' to repair.
Well the PC didn't come with any CD's and I only have one that I made after I'd had the PC for a month - a recovery disk.
So I called PC Servicecall back and told the guy what happened and I've got another harddrive arriving tomorrow - trouble is I need to get the info from my hard drive before I send it back to them.
I've looked at MS support site and there's options to do a manual repair (I'll copy and paste info here)
Method 1: Replace the SYSTEM Hive
Method 2: Restore the SYSTEM File from the SYSTEM.ALT Backup File
Method 3: Reduce the Size of the SYSTEM File
Method 4: Restore the SYSTEM Hive from Backup
Which all sound hunky dorey but I don't have any original bootable CD (the PC doesn't have a floppy drive), so I can't type 'r' to repair!!!!
In my possesion I do have an XP Pro CD, a Win2000 CD and a Win98 CD - my question is can I use these other CD's to try a 'repair' and get into the 'manual' area to try the methods above (the OS is Win Media Edition on the PC)?
Maxtor Hard Drive - Failing In Repairing Damaged Clusters And Segments
Aug 2, 2005I have a hardrive( Maxtor 6Y200P0) wich have got corrupted and bad segments. (this seme to be a common problem with Maxtor drives) Im almmost sure this drive have psychical damaged clusters, cause i have tested alot & alots of tools that should fix this has failing in repairing this damaged clusters and segments. this includes Maxtor official PoweMax v 1.21, wich fails to complete the surface test. i have got an Error Diagnostic Code=de676679. a code with a 8 numeral should indicate that a Maxtor Drive drive is broken,and is in need of replacement. thats all i know where should i send this code for a real analyz?, cant find anything on Maxtor Website, Another question, there is allso an option to do a Low ore High level formatation of the drive. I have heard that this could fix corrupted segments, If so,this must only be possible on logical damaged hardrives, not psycial damaged drives right? i have waiting with reformatation cause im unsure what type damage the drive have, and this is my last alternative to do.? should i do a low/high level formatation anyway?
