Formatted Hard Drive - How To Get Old Data
Jan 27, 2006I got a 2nd hand lap top from my boss yesterday. Took it home last night and formatted the hard drive, then installed Centos and Linux over it. Got to work this morning to discover that my boss hadn't copied all his files over! I need to recover all his Outlook files.

Sep 4, 2005I can recovering my data from a hard drive I've recently corrupted . Whilst in the process of moving/renaming partitions I've managed to corrupt my harddrive which contains an xp operating system, four partitions and 150 gigabytes of movies etc. I've now installed xp on my other drive but it wont recognise the other one. Infact its not recognising the other disc or its patitions at all, even thru windows recovery 'chkdsk' where it just says disk it unformatted. Norton disc doctor at least recognised the disc as corrupted (and unformatted) and declares a bad partion table but is unable to fix it. I think my data is probably lost for good and I'm going to have to reformat

Sep 16, 2006I am having a problem with my 400GB HDD not displaying correctly - it displays as 127GB - in a new install of Windows XP on a seperate drive. My original setup was as follows:400GB SATA HDD with Windows XP as the Operating System plus Data - Single Partition - NTFS. 300GB SATA HDD with purely data - Single Partition - NTFS.I bought a new HDD today (SATA 320GB) and installed it in the PC. The original XP install saw it was installed and offered formatting options from Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management - no formatting options were taken.I then installed Windows XP (non-SP2 install, SP2 has been installed afterwards along with Video Card and Motherboard drivers) to the new HDD without removing the old drives first.

Nov 7, 2007I want to use file recovery software to recover files from a HDD that was accidentally formatted. I am told not to save anything I can recover to the same drive I am recovering from. The computer only has a CD RW drive and a floppy drive. Can anybody tell me exactly how I can save the files the software finds to either the CD drive or the floppy drive? I downloaded three file recovery programs (1). pci_file recovery (2.) testdisk 6.8 (3.) free undelete. All have similar interface but they don't say how to save to floppy or CD. They just say do not save to same drive from which you recover. The computer is using windows xp and it has about 25 Gigs of free HDD space.

Jul 7, 2008I have a 250GB Western Digital hard drive with a ~195GB partition formatted as FAT32. The partition is called "Documents" and has the letter C: assigned to it. The rest of the hard drive isn't formatted. The operating system (WinXP) is installed on a different hard drive.Since yesterday in My Computer or Explorer it's called "Local Disk C:" and whenever I click on it I get a box that says "The disk in drive C is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?". For two hours it came back and I backed up all the most important information but then the same problem came back again. I was able to see the contents of the partition through a few applications but not access it. My whole computer is working sluggish since this happened.

Mar 19, 2010I'm having a problem with installing service pack 2 and can't seem to fix it.I formatted my hard drive last night and installed Windows XP Professional. I then downloaded SP2 and started to install it, the install gets as far as "Updating the Registry Keys" and then it just sits there... It doesn't crash, doesn't start not responding or anything like that, it just sits there and does nothing. Last night i left it sitting for 3 hours and it still hadn't done anything, this morning it's been sitting for about 55 minutes and still nothing.Any thoughts on what could be wrong?

I have been onto my motherboard manufacturers website and downloaded the appropriate driver. This worked (or so i thought) the ?Media Controller in device manager disappeared and my soundcard appeared. Media player plays CDs now, as do all my other sound related programs. The problem is i still can't hear any sound!

Sep 1, 2008This probably isn't really a Windows question but I can't find a better place to put it.I'm trying to recover files from a Dell laptop that won't boot into Windows. I think the partition is corrupt but I don't know enough to say for sure. When I try to boot normally, it says "NTLDR is missing".When I use a Windows installation disk (as if I were going to install or repair Windows), and I get to the part where it asks me to choose a partition, it shows the partition as "C: Unknown" where the other partitions (from Dell) are FAT or FAT32. When I run Ubuntu off of a LiveCD, I can see a "52.1 GB Volume: disk", but when I try to open that it tells me "The folder contents could not be displayed". The DellRestore and DellUtility partitions can be browsed normally.

The secondary machine, which was replaced by the primary some 8 months ago, is of much lesser spec but may have either a CD R/W or a Floppy Disk drive inserted into the media bay, but not both at the same time. Feb 27, 2005I have two identical drives a C and a D drive C was set up as primary and D as secondary. The C drive had winxp pro and my programs on it and the D drive was my storage drive for all my music and important files. I decided to reinstall winXP on my C drive and it kept giving me problems so I decided to install Linux Fedora on it instead. I am getting an external drive in a couple of days and figured I'd just reinstall winXP on the C drive and remove fedora when it got here then move my music and data from the D drive to the external. Then I would reformat both C and D drives and sell them. When looking in the case I mistook one for the other and reformatted my secondary D drive, then installed fedora Core onto it. During install I instructed it to remove all OS's and reformat everything. I had about 28 gigs of data and fedora core is only .5 gigs or so. Can I set the C drive as primary again and plug in the D drive as secondary then from disk management change the D drive back to a windows format like NFTS or what ever and then run some program to get my data back?

I have tried copying large amounts of data (13-20Gb) but after a few minutes, I get "The drive is not ready" and it disappears from My Computer. If I disconnect it and re-connect it, it will reappear. The same happended with a 20Gb drive I swapped in, so it seems that it's not the drive. I have tried a different port to no avail.

I could not boot my system so I tried reinstalling os on C: section again, it required a format. The diagnostic disk creates a makeshift os which allows for very limited manipulation of information on hard drive. Since I can not install os onto bad hard drive section C how can I transfer data from the section D: partition to either a new hard drive or to a storage medium?

Extracting Data Off A Corrupt Hard Drive?
Aug 2, 2009I have my windows XP Partition on the C Drive. I am trying to extract all the info from my D Drive and put it onto an External Hard drive. For some reason it is just not letting me transfer the files. I have tried to send and copy them over with no luck. I have tried using Acronis T.Image, but doesn't work (tells me that there is bad sectors and can't transfer). Tried using bootable disks (UBCD 4 Win, Drive XML, Norton partition manager 9.0 etc. As soon as I start extracting files it gives me and error message and asks if I want to ignore, retry etc. What would you suggest. I was going to run a disk check on this D drive, but I am afraid of it wiping out some of my files. Is there another bootable disk that I should use for extracting my files.
