A friend of mine's hard drive was damaged so I replaced it and installed Windows XP on the new Hard drive. This was fine and no problem. In an effort to salvage some of his files from damaged hard drive I connected it as slave and windows recognised it with out a problem. Now the tricky bit! I was able to access "My Documents" on the old HD but when I tried to open his folder(for his profile) I got an "Access denied" message. He then told me that he had a password on his previous windows profile. Since Windows is not booting from this HD and I don't have an option to enter a password, is there a way to access this folder?

I just reinstalled windows xp on a computer which was having problems with win xp installation. I do not remember how I reinstalled it but I somehow forgot to save a few data files. I would like to have kept. Does anyone know of any utilities including freeware and non freeware to try to scan the hard disk and recover the files in case they still exist and the problem is that they are just not indexed by the file system?

About two weeks ago, I came home to a dead computer. The fans were on in the case, but the monitor was off. Every time I rebooted, the same happened. I finally had to send my motherboard and CPU in. Intel sent me a warranty replacement Dual Core 2 2.4Ghz processor and ASUS sent me a new motherboard. However, it was not the original. It was the same type of board but the premium model (P5N32-SLI Premium, original was Deluxe) as they didn?t have mine in stock.
While I waited for the new components to arrive, I was able to hook up my old hard drive to my brother?s computer. The hard drive is a SATA Western Digital 250GB. I was able to grab a few files off but didn?t need any others at the time. Plus, the hard drive seemed to working fine so I had no reason to think it would be a problem to get files off in the future..........

I had to reinstall Windows XP on my Dell laptop after it stopped working. When I went to reinstall my antivirus software it looked at all the files on my computer, while I was watching to my surprise I saw all my old files (music, pictures and such) so I know they are there somewhere on the hard drive I am just unsure on how to retrieve them. I am not a genius but can follow instuructions if someone can head me in the right direction.

I use Cobian Backup to produce a zip-file containing all files and folders, except for temporary-folders (I added an exclude-filter), of my system. Before I can rely on this method, I need to find a way of restoring the 27 gb zip-file, which I store on a networked drive, easily. how booting up a laptop with a formatted harddrive, be able to access a network-drive and extract all the contents of the networked zip-file to the hard drive?

I have a 250GB Western Digital hard drive with a ~195GB partition formatted as FAT32. The partition is called "Documents" and has the letter C: assigned to it. The rest of the hard drive isn't formatted. The operating system (WinXP) is installed on a different hard drive.Since yesterday in My Computer or Explorer it's called "Local Disk C:" and whenever I click on it I get a box that says "The disk in drive C is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?". For two hours it came back and I backed up all the most important information but then the same problem came back again. I was able to see the contents of the partition through a few applications but not access it. My whole computer is working sluggish since this happened.

I'm having a problem with installing service pack 2 and can't seem to fix it.I formatted my hard drive last night and installed Windows XP Professional. I then downloaded SP2 and started to install it, the install gets as far as "Updating the Registry Keys" and then it just sits there... It doesn't crash, doesn't start not responding or anything like that, it just sits there and does nothing. Last night i left it sitting for 3 hours and it still hadn't done anything, this morning it's been sitting for about 55 minutes and still nothing.Any thoughts on what could be wrong?

I started another thread a couple of days ago but have progressed a bit since then so thought i would start a fresh one.I have recently formatted my hard drive and lost drivers for my soundcard. I have been onto my motherboard manufacturers website and downloaded the appropriate driver. This worked (or so i thought) the ?Media Controller in device manager disappeared and my soundcard appeared. Media player plays CDs now, as do all my other sound related programs. The problem is i still can't hear any sound!

Ok here's the story, I bought Windows Vista, hated it with a passion, so I went to reinstall XP. Everything's going fine, then it gets to the stage where it wants to pick a hard drive to install it on.
I have a 120GB (split into 40GB/80GB partition), and 2 250GB HDDs. So it tells me I have a previous version of Windows installed. I say format that (I was on the phone to a friend while doing this, so I wasn't paying much attention, but I've done this hundreds of times before), then "Storage 2 (E Formatting"...I pulled out the power supply in haste, but it was to late, logged into Windows, and gone 250GB of files that would take years to recover, if they are even recoverable... and I just realised all my web development work was on the drive as well... I have back ups but not everything is backed up...I only did a quick format, so I don't know if that makes it easier to recover but I need a good, reliable, and possibly free program to get my stuff back.

I have two identical drives a C and a D drive C was set up as primary and D as secondary. The C drive had winxp pro and my programs on it and the D drive was my storage drive for all my music and important files. I decided to reinstall winXP on my C drive and it kept giving me problems so I decided to install Linux Fedora on it instead. I am getting an external drive in a couple of days and figured I'd just reinstall winXP on the C drive and remove fedora when it got here then move my music and data from the D drive to the external. Then I would reformat both C and D drives and sell them. When looking in the case I mistook one for the other and reformatted my secondary D drive, then installed fedora Core onto it. During install I instructed it to remove all OS's and reformat everything. I had about 28 gigs of data and fedora core is only .5 gigs or so. Can I set the C drive as primary again and plug in the D drive as secondary then from disk management change the D drive back to a windows format like NFTS or what ever and then run some program to get my data back?

My old hdd was used to run Windows XP Pro, where my profile was password protect and set for private. Since replacing that crashed pc with a new 1 that runs Windows Media Center I have been able to recover all except the data listed under my account's My Documents. When I scroll over it it says folder empty. When I click on it it says access denied (something like that). How can I retrieve this data. I tried some freeware I found online, but all it did was locate previously deleted files to recover. I want to recover stuff not previously deleted.

I'm basically on 'reinstall not booting Windows XP' duty this week. The problem I have is my father inlaw lost his C.O.A of his tower somewhere between his house, his car and my house, (about 60 miles).I can't boot from his hard drive, however I can 'browse/access' it. I've tried a couple of 'retrieve windows key' programs, which work...on my P.C! I have my key tho! I tried installing one into his hard drive but kept finding my key. Is there a command from 'DOS prompt' or some other measure I can take to recover his serial key?

I recently helped someone save the documents off of their computer after it crashed (it was missing a Windows file. I tried the repair command and it wouldn't work, so I decided to save the files and reformat the hard drive).I plugged the hard drive into a working computer and pulled all the documents off of it (VERY slowly) onto an external hard drive.
Every once in awhile I wouldn't be able to pull a picture or document off because of a cyclic redundancy check error. I just moved on and saved what I could. I assumed it was because the hard drive was already bad so I just moved what I could.

I have Easy Recovery Pro, but I do not like the way it recovers files on a hard drive with a missing allocation table. What software can I use to recover a hard drive where I know the data is still there, but the allocation table is missing. I used to use Norton Disk Doctor and Sytem Utilities.

When I attempted to start my computer, which is running Windows XP Professional Edition, this morning, I received an error message saying
Invalid Boot.ini
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
WindowsSystem32Hal.dll
I researched this issue in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, which said to boot from the Windows XP CD-ROM and use the Recovery Console to perform the repairs. However, when I did, it said that Windows could not detect any hard drives and could not continue.

Hello everyone. I am currently using Windows XP SP2 on a Thinkpad T43 laptop. My main partition which houses windows xp is 34 GB total size. When I highlight the C: drive in "My Computer", it tells me that I have 10GB of free space (therefore I'm using 24GB). When, however, I double click on C: and go into that folder, select all (and yes, I have enabled viewing hidden files/folders), right-click and choose properties, I am then told that C: only contains 15GB of files/folders. Where is this missing 5GB?

My problem is a result of a long series of attempts to fix a corrupt Windows registry file. A few days ago I booted my laptop and received a blue screen error: c0000218, relating to a corrupt Windows registry file. Windows could not load. After a lot of searching online I found a way to manually replace this and four other related files from the c:WindowsRepair folder using the command prompt.
This process seemed to work and Windows began to load. I then received a lsass.exe error saying something about invalid passwords. My laptop began an infinite cycle of restarting itself. I looked up the lsass.exe error and people seemed to think it was unrecoverable. As my hard drive was reasonably small (100g) and had been showing some signs of problems I decided to just buy a new one. I went out and purchased a new 320g 2.5" hard drive along with a 2.5" USB drive enclosure and another 1g stick of RAM......

I have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

My laptop died and I removed the hard drive.i hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.
I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.
My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.
