I have Easy Recovery Pro, but I do not like the way it recovers files on a hard drive with a missing allocation table. What software can I use to recover a hard drive where I know the data is still there, but the allocation table is missing. I used to use Norton Disk Doctor and Sytem Utilities.
View 3 RepliesHello everyone. I am currently using Windows XP SP2 on a Thinkpad T43 laptop. My main partition which houses windows xp is 34 GB total size. When I highlight the C: drive in "My Computer", it tells me that I have 10GB of free space (therefore I'm using 24GB). When, however, I double click on C: and go into that folder, select all (and yes, I have enabled viewing hidden files/folders), right-click and choose properties, I am then told that C: only contains 15GB of files/folders. Where is this missing 5GB?
View 11 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine's hard drive was damaged so I replaced it and installed Windows XP on the new Hard drive. This was fine and no problem. In an effort to salvage some of his files from damaged hard drive I connected it as slave and windows recognised it with out a problem. Now the tricky bit! I was able to access "My Documents" on the old HD but when I tried to open his folder(for his profile) I got an "Access denied" message. He then told me that he had a password on his previous windows profile. Since Windows is not booting from this HD and I don't have an option to enter a password, is there a way to access this folder?

Since replacing that crashed pc with a new 1 that runs Windows Media Center I have been able to recover all except the data listed under my account's My Documents. When I scroll over it it says folder empty. When I click on it it says access denied (something like that). How can I retrieve this data. I tried some freeware I found online, but all it did was locate previously deleted files to recover. I want to recover stuff not previously deleted.

I do not remember how I reinstalled it but I somehow forgot to save a few data files. I would like to have kept. Does anyone know of any utilities including freeware and non freeware to try to scan the hard disk and recover the files in case they still exist and the problem is that they are just not indexed by the file system?

The problem I have is my father inlaw lost his C.O.A of his tower somewhere between his house, his car and my house, (about 60 miles).I can't boot from his hard drive, however I can 'browse/access' it. I've tried a couple of 'retrieve windows key' programs, which work...on my P.C! I have my key tho! I tried installing one into his hard drive but kept finding my key. Is there a command from 'DOS prompt' or some other measure I can take to recover his serial key?

View 9 Replies View RelatedAbout two weeks ago, I came home to a dead computer. The fans were on in the case, but the monitor was off. Every time I rebooted, the same happened. I finally had to send my motherboard and CPU in. Intel sent me a warranty replacement Dual Core 2 2.4Ghz processor and ASUS sent me a new motherboard. However, it was not the original. It was the same type of board but the premium model (P5N32-SLI Premium, original was Deluxe) as they didn?t have mine in stock.
While I waited for the new components to arrive, I was able to hook up my old hard drive to my brother?s computer. The hard drive is a SATA Western Digital 250GB. I was able to grab a few files off but didn?t need any others at the time. Plus, the hard drive seemed to working fine so I had no reason to think it would be a problem to get files off in the future..........
When I attempted to start my computer, which is running Windows XP Professional Edition, this morning, I received an error message saying

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
WindowsSystem32Hal.dll
I researched this issue in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, which said to boot from the Windows XP CD-ROM and use the Recovery Console to perform the repairs. However, when I did, it said that Windows could not detect any hard drives and could not continue.
I had to reinstall Windows XP on my Dell laptop after it stopped working. When I went to reinstall my antivirus software it looked at all the files on my computer, while I was watching to my surprise I saw all my old files (music, pictures and such) so I know they are there somewhere on the hard drive I am just unsure on how to retrieve them. I am not a genius but can follow instuructions if someone can head me in the right direction.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently destroyed file structure due to mistakenly writing a partition table to the wrong hard disk drive on my machine while installing an experimental version of OS X. The saving factor is that the partition that may have formatted was only 20GB out of 200GB and the rest was unallocated free space. I have installed a temporary instance of WinXP to use data recovery software and recover the majority of files from the drive (it is installed on the non-corrupted
drive).
My problem is a result of a long series of attempts to fix a corrupt Windows registry file. A few days ago I booted my laptop and received a blue screen error: c0000218, relating to a corrupt Windows registry file. Windows could not load. After a lot of searching online I found a way to manually replace this and four other related files from the c:WindowsRepair folder using the command prompt.
This process seemed to work and Windows began to load. I then received a lsass.exe error saying something about invalid passwords. My laptop began an infinite cycle of restarting itself. I looked up the lsass.exe error and people seemed to think it was unrecoverable. As my hard drive was reasonably small (100g) and had been showing some signs of problems I decided to just buy a new one. I went out and purchased a new 320g 2.5" hard drive along with a 2.5" USB drive enclosure and another 1g stick of RAM......
Correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that hard drive letters were assigned each time the machine booted up & only c & d were reserved for the operating system & CD/DVD drive & if the number of drives altered from one boot up to the next these letters could change. The reason hat I ask is that I changed an internal drive which had several partitions on it only to find that this drive isn't recognized, but even though it isn't recognized by My Computer or disk management the other partition are labeled as if this were listed.I now don't have a an 'e' & 'g' drive listed. But I do have a 'J' & 'k' listed. Where is my other drive 'e' & 'g' & how do I get to use the data on them.

I tried to reboot using the recovery console on the windows CD but windows cannot find the Sata hard drive at all So I cant use the CD to reinstall windows over existing windows either I have access to another system, without a floppy drive but not sure what the best method of solving this problem is...Dont want to reformat as I have things on the H/D I need, I know I should have backed up...unfortunately I didnt, wont happen again though, lesson well and truly learned

When I used CCleaner and WinDirStat yesterday, it only scanned and showed 6 GB of total space, not free space. I don't use very many programs, and I'm trying to find out where all of my memory went:To save hard drive space, I've turned off both hibernation and System restore, moved my My Documents folder to my SD card, and kept my installations to about 1.5 GB.

Previously I installed Windows XP Professional, and then after a few months something happened (I don't know what), and my computer would not operate. I charged up the battery completely and when I went to BIOS Utility to do a self test on the Hard Drive, it said no Hard Drive was detected and there was no IDE. I, then, had a friend look at it, and he pulled out the Hard Drive and noticed two prongs were bent. The prongs were then bent back staright and the drive put in. This still did not fix the problem. It says the command interepreter is missing.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi had Ubuntu (dual boot with XP), and i got both partions on 15GBs each, now that Ubuntu its gone, i thought that my XP would have back the 30GB it used to have but it doesnt, it still says it has the 15GB the partion used to have, and i deleted Ubuntu by using my XP disk and Repaired the computer doing the fixmbr thingy and i thought it was going to make it the way it was before, also, my floppy drive doesnt seem to work, it lights up, when i log in it seems like its trying to scan a floppy or something, and when i try to open up a floppy disk it freezes the window and doesnt let me work or anything.

I have tried knoppix, for a few times I was copying files to external hard drive but the transfer stalled. I have tried fixmbr, fixboot, and copying the ntldr and ntdetec files from recovery cd. One strange thing is that the file system is now listed as fat16. Is this data recoverable? I have backed up the system on the external but it was about 2 weeks ago. I would like to recover a few emails in the outlook pst file. Is the hard drive fried or did the boot.ini file become terribly corrupt?
View 6 Replies View RelatedInstalled new hard drive, along with XP Home (recovery disk).Before my system crashed all my motherboard drivers were on D: partition.XP loads okay, but it is unstable - for example I cannot start msconfig under "Normal" start up. It crashes. I will not list all the BSOD - but XP doesn't like something.I have no devices connected apart from basic graphics card (which XP loaded the drivers for okay). I am waiting for XP Pro to be delivered, so I am hoping that my unstable XP will become stable after I upgrade (or full installation) of a retail version.
Prior to installing my current XP (one time of at least 30 others - as kept crashing),I tried to load my motherboard drivers from the disk my manufacture supplied.is it possible that my XP Home is unstable BECAUSE I do not have my motherboard drivers loaded? PC (XP) wont boot, says NTLDR missing.I wonder if anyone could give me any advice about how to salvage my firefox bookmarks from my system which wont even boot. (the bookmarks are all i need to salvage from the c drive as my downloads files and documents are safely stored on my 2nd hard drive) My home PC (windows XP) died a death the other day playing up, wont boot now, says ntldr is missing, wont even boot up in safe mode, it doesnt get as far as giving me an option. (tried swopping cables around and stripped bare to the basics needed to boot but no such luck there either). Boots up with a unix live disc but i noticed it cant detect the c drive on the system, altho it does in bios.

When i performed a standard recovery program on my computer it was supposed to install the program without affecting any of the data on my system but it my three user profiles became one. I got all of my files but the most important one will not open and a message appears stating that the file is not accessible. The data is still there because the memory is still used up on the hard drive but the properties indicates as there is nothing.
