Missing Hard Drive Yet Drive Letters Are Correct Maybe?
Jun 24, 2005
Correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that hard drive letters were assigned each time the machine booted up & only c & d were reserved for the operating system & CD/DVD drive & if the number of drives altered from one boot up to the next these letters could change. The reason hat I ask is that I changed an internal drive which had several partitions on it only to find that this drive isn't recognized, but even though it isn't recognized by My Computer or disk management the other partition are labeled as if this were listed.I now don't have a an 'e' & 'g' drive listed. But I do have a 'J' & 'k' listed. Where is my other drive 'e' & 'g' & how do I get to use the data on them.

Hardware:
IDE drive; SATA drive; misc USB drives and card readers p4 (2G) Foxcon board (w/ SATA support); 2G Ram...
Software:
XP Pro SP2; Partition Magic 8; (& misc apps)
I bit the bullet and reformatted my hard drive after problems with a corrupted W98 partition. (My testimonial to XP is that w/ W98 I did this sometimes twice a year or more; I've run XP without having to re-format for over two years.)

I have no idea why but I have an issue where my brother's computer after a clean install of XP from 98 exchanged ID letters. Drive "C" is now "F" and the Zip drive is now "C". It may have been something to do with SP2 which I removed. Windows won't allow me to change the hard drive back to "C" even after I made it available by designating the Zip as "H". Trying in Safe mode did not allow the change, nor did Partition Magic change it. "C" was added to the name but I could not change it from "F". I already started over and reinstalled XP but it still came up "F" as the hard drive. Things work after the second install where the drives quit after the first half-way into re-loading programs. Now it is just a pathway issue. What else can I do short of starting all over? Is there a way to change the hard drive designation? Any help would be appreciated

I just bought a WD 1 TB to replace 120 GB slave (it was 'c:') I had. I intended to still use it as a slave and keep my 320 GB (it was 'd:') as the master. They're both SATA's so of course that doesn't matter so I just kept the 320 set as the primary in BIOS.At first boot up the computer started fine but when it started Windows the previous devices hadn't been loaded and I was asked to register again before starting. I re-registered and clearly all the previous settings are gone

A friend has a 200G hard drive partitioned into two sections, no OS on it. The drive doesn't show up in disk management but does in System/hardware. Can't get anything off of it, XP won't read it. Does anyone have any ideas please? He's got 12 mb free on one partition and 7 mb free on the other but the drive just doesn't show up in XP. Thanks in advance for any help on this one. I have the same set up so I'm kinda worried and would like to know any ideas just in case for future reference

So I just ran into a problem with my External Western Digital Hard Drive. Previously, my drive was mapped as the E Drive (I believe) and after taking it down and setting it up again (when i moved back to college), my external hard drive switched drive names on me. This really sucks, as my external drive stores all of my iTunes music and now when i run iTunes, it tries to find the music from the E Drive location and not the G Drive location. Is there an easy way I can change the letter drives so that I don't have to reimport all of my music?

Just recently my computer started doing the annoying thing where you try to type, but it freezes for a couple of seconds and then all the typing you did finally shows up. It does it when I try to scroll down a page, too; everything freezes for a few seconds before my cursor is responsive again. I have a fairly high-powered computer, and no extraneous programs are running. When I keep Task Manager running, I can see spikey activity in the CPU when these freeze-ups occur. I keep things well-defragged and spyware-free.

2nd drive no longer shows up in BIOS, my computer, or control panel system hardware. When I checked my C drive, in the control panel system hardware it's now listed as a SCSI hard drive, and includes a SCSI controller. How do I convert it back to a standard IDE SATA hard drive. And is this transformation is the cause of my lost 2nd drive?

After reformating my pc, my secondary hard drive is now designated as drive "D". Before the reformat it was drive "G". I have software that needs to get data from drive "G" but the drive is not designated as "G" any longer. I can't remember how to reassign the drive letters so that I can designate the secondary drive as "G".

At work we have so many network drives and in a recent upgrade to xp, the drive letters are showing up at the very end of the drive description. In certain applications, you only get to see a short portion of the beginning of the drive info and with the complex naming schemes we have, it is difficult to remember what's what and hard to tell the difference with just the beginning showing. It's very easy to remember what we've designated as K or N or P for example. Any way to switch these letters back to the beginning?

My HP Mini has a 16GB hard drive and I've had it for about 6 months now. When I used CCleaner and WinDirStat yesterday, it only scanned and showed 6 GB of total space, not free space. I don't use very many programs, and I'm trying to find out where all of my memory went:To save hard drive space, I've turned off both hibernation and System restore, moved my My Documents folder to my SD card, and kept my installations to about 1.5 GB.

I have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

I have a Compaq Presario 2580US Notebook with an operating system Windows XP Home Edition. Previously I installed Windows XP Professional, and then after a few months something happened (I don't know what), and my computer would not operate. I charged up the battery completely and when I went to BIOS Utility to do a self test on the Hard Drive, it said no Hard Drive was detected and there was no IDE. I, then, had a friend look at it, and he pulled out the Hard Drive and noticed two prongs were bent. The prongs were then bent back staright and the drive put in. This still did not fix the problem. It says the command interepreter is missing.

HP ZT3000 was working fine. after no major changes, hard drive made a few noises and a missing hal.dll error message appeared. I have tried knoppix, for a few times I was copying files to external hard drive but the transfer stalled. I have tried fixmbr, fixboot, and copying the ntldr and ntdetec files from recovery cd. One strange thing is that the file system is now listed as fat16. Is this data recoverable? I have backed up the system on the external but it was about 2 weeks ago. I would like to recover a few emails in the outlook pst file. Is the hard drive fried or did the boot.ini file become terribly corrupt?

Installed new hard drive, along with XP Home (recovery disk). Before my system crashed all my motherboard drivers were on D: partition.XP loads okay, but it is unstable - for example I cannot start msconfig under "Normal" start up. It crashes. I will not list all the BSOD - but XP doesn't like something.I have no devices connected apart from basic graphics card (which XP loaded the drivers for okay). I am waiting for XP Pro to be delivered, so I am hoping that my unstable XP will become stable after I upgrade (or full installation) of a retail version.
Prior to installing my current XP (one time of at least 30 others - as kept crashing),I tried to load my motherboard drivers from the disk my manufacture supplied.is it possible that my XP Home is unstable BECAUSE I do not have my motherboard drivers loaded? That might seem a naive question - but I honestly do not know, and I've started to become a tad paranoid as these problems have been ongoing for 5 weeks.

(tried swopping cables around and stripped bare to the basics needed to boot but no such luck there either). Boots up with a unix live disc but i noticed it cant detect the c drive on the system, altho it does in bios.

Hello everyone. I am currently using Windows XP SP2 on a Thinkpad T43 laptop. My main partition which houses windows xp is 34 GB total size. When I highlight the C: drive in "My Computer", it tells me that I have 10GB of free space (therefore I'm using 24GB). When, however, I double click on C: and go into that folder, select all (and yes, I have enabled viewing hidden files/folders), right-click and choose properties, I am then told that C: only contains 15GB of files/folders. Where is this missing 5GB?

My laptop died and I removed the hard drive.i hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.
I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.
My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.

I recently tried to reinstall windows xp, but the installation was interrupted and left me with a partially installed windows on my hard drive. Now, whenever I try to install again, it gives me the error: NTLDR is missing. I made a msdos boot disc to reformat my drive such that I can try installing windows again. However, I have two hard drive (one for windows and programs and one for storage) and I don't know which one is which letter. How can I find this information, so that I don't accidentally wipe my storage drive?

I'm trying to play Diablo II: LoD, which requires that the LoD expansion CD be in my CDROM drive. I mounted an image of the disc with Daemon such that it's in (virtual) Drive E: (normal CDROM drive is D:). But the game seems to only be checking my D: Drive for the disc, and it won't let me point to the E: Drive.
Is there a way to just switch the drive letters around, and if so, do you think this would even solve my problem? Perhaps there's a way I can just set E: as my default CDROM drive, so that the game would check there?
