Reformatting Hard Drive Msdos Boot Disk - Error NTLDR Missing
Jun 16, 2005
I recently tried to reinstall windows xp, but the installation was interrupted and left me with a partially installed windows on my hard drive. Now, whenever I try to install again, it gives me the error: NTLDR is missing. I made a msdos boot disc to reformat my drive such that I can try installing windows again. However, I have two hard drive (one for windows and programs and one for storage) and I don't know which one is which letter. How can I find this information, so that I don't accidentally wipe my storage drive?

I recently acquired a 64-bit processor, so I decided to try out the 64-bit version of Windows. I backed up everything on C: and moved it to G:. Then I deleted the C: partition and installed Windows XP 64-bit version on that partition. Then I decided that I really didn't like it, so I ran the Windows Setup disk and deleted the C: partition, created it again, and voila! No more XP 64. Then I tried to boot back into my original version of XP Pro and it gave me the "NTLDR is missing" error. Reloaded XP 64 on the C: partition, copied NTLDR from the XP cd over to my D: drive, deleted the C: partition, and just left it alone this time. Now I get an error with something along the lines of "HARD DISK ERROR...Restart Computer".

PC (XP) wont boot, says NTLDR missing.I wonder if anyone could give me any advice about how to salvage my firefox bookmarks from my system which wont even boot. (the bookmarks are all i need to salvage from the c drive as my downloads files and documents are safely stored on my 2nd hard drive) My home PC (windows XP) died a death the other day playing up, wont boot now, says ntldr is missing, wont even boot up in safe mode, it doesnt get as far as giving me an option. (tried swopping cables around and stripped bare to the basics needed to boot but no such luck there either). Boots up with a unix live disc but i noticed it cant detect the c drive on the system, altho it does in bios.

my hard drive will simply not boot. i am having a problem with NTLDR is missing. i have tried at least 4 different methods of fixing it. it will not boot from a floppy drive or cd. the hard drive is about a year old. i think the problem started after i used a cleaning program called PC-decrapifier.. thinking it would speed up my computer.. i would like to fix this problem asap and the hard drive isn't bad, because i can connect it to my other computer as a slave and access my files, but i still can not boot it even in another computer.

I attached a hard drive as a slave to my computer and I went to command prompt and formatted the drive using format d:.When I put the hard drive back into another computer as the master drive, I get an error message saying "NTLDR is missing" in command prompt. I tried to search on google, but I can only find solutions for systems that already have Windows installed on it.I changed the boot device priority in the BIOS, but I still couldn't get the Windows XP to boot.

having my laptop returned from service I found my Bios messed with where when I would start my computer but Bios wouldn't find my hard drive or an OS I found that my system was set to RAID instead of ATA. After resetting it back to ATA it boots up fine. However I wanted to reformat and start clean.I placed my XP disk in, reset my BIOS to read my optical drive first and no problems. However every time I get to partition drive all I see is "Unknown Device" If I press any key I get a blue screen of death. Most times it's the 0X0000008E.

computer that has two hard drives and a different os on both hard drives. 1 Drive has windows 2000 pro, and the other has xp home. It was configured so that on boot up, there would be a choice of which operating system to boot into, though I do not know which drive was giving this choice. At this point when I boot, I get the error message "ntldr is missing press any key to restart". I have changed the boot order in the bios to see if it will boot from the other hard drive, and I get the same results.

I have taken a hitachi hdd that had xp home on it, put it solo in a machine (cuz it is larger tryin' to upgrade) that had been using & working perfectly fine with 2k pro. got a missing os error. read dozens more. own full store bought version of the afore mentioned xp. tried to boot from cd, does NOT appear to even recognize anything is in the drive. went into bios made sure cd was 1st boot, still "missin os" still doesn't see cd in drive. here is where i would like some more detail pleez, mind you i'm a beginner, yet have a keen interest in computers. now i read that computers don't like swaps of os too hot, so i pulled the xp hdd back out of the 2k machine set it up as slave in the machine i'm using now (it's actual "birth" machine) & formatted it, then deleted it from the drivers before removing it. put it back in the rig that runs 2k, now the error states "NTLDR is missing". by the way i corrected the jumpers both swaps. tried the cd again still ntlrd error. went into bios, confirmed recognition of hdd, yep pretty as a picture. does'nt formatting wipe the thing clean (for my intent & purpose)? i have to be missing a step here, i mean why won't the thing read the cd? the cd rom works, i read something about possibly not being able to boot from it though!?

My moms computer had a big red X next to the C: Drive, so I ran AVG and it wouldnt work it just froze up. So I did some poking around online and found Vundo. So I ran it and it found a bunch of stuff and then deleted it all. Then when I restarted the PC I get the "NTLDR is missing, Press ctrl-alt-delete to restart" error message. So I found out how to fix that with a boot disk. Here comes problem number one. the recovery disk is HP Windows XP sp2. Im not sure if the OS is the same because the disk is from my laptop. (both are HP windows xp) So I put in the disk, hit ctrl-alt-del and press enter to boot from disk. Everything looks normal, it says windows setup, and is loading files at the bottom of the screen. At the welcome screen I press R and am taken to the recovery console. This is where it gets weird.

On my pc, I had one drive with Windows 98 on it, and one drive with Windows XP on it
Windows 98 was on drive C: XP was on D: They were set up so I could choose which one to boot to at start up I wanted to get rid of the 98 entirely, so I edited the boot ini, just removing the entry for windows 98 after restarting the computer, everything was fine....going directly to XP so I wanted to format the 98 drive so I could use it as additional storage, which I did using norton partition magic, I then shut down my computer......turned it back on.....and I get an error saying: NTLDR is missing.

It started with the NTLDR is missing error,so I load the recovery console and prepare to copy it to the drive when I notice ALL the boot files are missing, in fact every file on the root of C drive is gone.So I make a boot disk from my lap top copy the boot files to the disk and give this a try. Boots fine and seems to run perfect. Copy the boot files to the C drive, reboot numerous times, all good so I go home, leaving him the boot disk and showing him what to do just in case.
Next day same thing, What we seem to have determined is that the files seem to disappear later in the evening. I had him run all the pgms he normally does for a good while, quit the pgm and check C. The files are still there. after a few hours of fooling around he leaves PC on and goes watch TV. Comes back about 11:00pm to turn off PC, checks C drive and they're gone again. He re copies the files, shuts down and goes to bed.Next day PC boots fines before work, after work etc... BUT some time later in the evening it happens again.

About ten days ago my Acer Aspire E360 (AMD 64 X2 3800, 2gb - Win Media Center 2005) started giving BSOD errors at startup. It would to into safe mode but no trouble shooting worked. Finally it wouldn't boot at all giving me the: NTLDR missing error. I downloaded the ISO that 'fixes' this error and it didn't work, saying that hal.dll was missing. My recovery disks - 6 in all - are available but when I booted from them they said that it would erase the entire C drive. In the meantime I downloaded ISOs to test the disk and the memory. Disk was fine, but there was one very bad memory stick, which I've replaced.
I don't want to lose the C: data. I did do an Acronis 10 backup just before it went totally down, but I'm not sure that the bad memory stick didn't corrupt data that's now backed up. A friend gave me a copy of a WinXP Pro (without serial number) to see if I could use the repair function. However, he only copied the files and did not clone the disk so it's not bootable. Using another computer I used Nero (Caldera DOS) to make a bootable disk. Unfortunately when I tried to boot up with it I got a warning: "EMM386 - address line A20 already enabled." and then it froze.

HP ZT3000 was working fine. after no major changes, hard drive made a few noises and a missing hal.dll error message appeared. I have tried knoppix, for a few times I was copying files to external hard drive but the transfer stalled. I have tried fixmbr, fixboot, and copying the ntldr and ntdetec files from recovery cd. One strange thing is that the file system is now listed as fat16. Is this data recoverable? I have backed up the system on the external but it was about 2 weeks ago. I would like to recover a few emails in the outlook pst file. Is the hard drive fried or did the boot.ini file become terribly corrupt?

I have a gateway amd athlon 1.10 Ghz running microsoft windows server 2003 datacenter edition. The os was installed by my former roommate, without my permission, and I believe it may not be a legal copy. I've been trying to reformat the hard drive and install a copy of Windows XP Professional, which is legal, but it tells me wrong dos version whenever I try to do this. My former roommate also partitioned the drive, also without my permission. I would like to remove the partition as well, but don't really know how.

we've got a bit of a problem. Our computer came with Windows XP Home Edition already installed by Dell. Just recently my internet stopped working, and my mom changed the administrator password and made the main account non-administrator. Problem? SHE FORGOT THE PASSWORD!So, now, we can't install/uninstall anything and we need to know how to completely reformat our hard disk and uninstall windows so that we can start over fresh. We plan to reinstall Windows with a complete Windows XP Home Edition CD that we purchased separately. We also have another CD that came with the computer, but we're not sure if it is a complete Windows XP Home Edition installation CD. *NOTE* My mom is working with me on this, and she's more computer savvy than me. She's going to be the one reading the instructions. I just type faster
