Remove Item From The Start Menu
Jan 4, 2009I am using windows xp sp2 and i have an item in the start menu called "reboot computer into safe mode". I don't know how it got there and i want to remove it because its useless and it doesn't work.when i click on it a message pops up "windows cannot find ........... click the start button then click search." yes, I've tried removing it by right clicking on the taskbar and clicking the "taskbar and start menu properties" but there's not option to remove it there. So how do I remove it from the start menu.I know how to reg edit.

One this I can't get rid of is an item on the Start Menu "Buy From Toshiba Direct". It's located directly above the shutdown dialogue in it's own little category, below the Run button. There's no options I can find to remove this.

Jun 29, 2005The improvement which I'd like to suggest is to change the behaviour of the recently used programs part of the Start Menu so that it doesn't include any programs which are already pinned. I have several programs pinned because I use them so often - Word, Excel, Outlook Express etc - so it's pointless and irritating to have them appear twice on the menu because they are on the recent programs list under the pinned list too. This is even more irritating when, as occasionally happens, it is a program which has a unique initial
letter which I use to quickly start the program. For example on my Start Menu, Notepad is the only pinned item starting with N, and so I can press "Start, N" to run it. Unfortunately sometimes Notepad ends up in the recently used list, and then because there are two programs beginning with N, my shortcut no longer works.
One point worth noting perhaps, seeing as I've just tried this and it didn't seem to happen ... it only happens at bootup, if you do anything to modify the Start Menu - such as pinning a different item - then all duplicates get removed. And they won't reappear if you use the program again. However as soon as you do a restart, they reappear in the menu, and stay until they are forcibly removed, such as by pinning something else.

Apr 10, 2006I have a compaq presario running windows xp with wireless network installed. When i performed a standard recovery program on my computer it was supposed to install the program without affecting any of the data on my system but it my three user profiles became one. I got all of my files but the most important one will not open and a message appears stating that the file is not accessible. The data is still there because the memory is still used up on the hard drive but the properties indicates as there is nothing.

It did something to my registry that now when i boot my computer i don't see any desktop icons on the desktop. All i see is the green windows background with the logo win xp home edition. i tried to get into the system restore by going thru the CTL + ALT+ Del then go in New Task and run to pop up the system restore point window. when i do that I get the system restore point window but the window is blank. No text no calender ( the usual restore point screen) to restore it to an earlier point. What do i do now.

Mar 20, 2009Hello everyone. I am currently using Windows XP SP2 on a Thinkpad T43 laptop. My main partition which houses windows xp is 34 GB total size. When I highlight the C: drive in "My Computer", it tells me that I have 10GB of free space (therefore I'm using 24GB). When, however, I double click on C: and go into that folder, select all (and yes, I have enabled viewing hidden files/folders), right-click and choose properties, I am then told that C: only contains 15GB of files/folders. Where is this missing 5GB?

Aug 6, 2009First the customer told me that all his desktop icons disappeared. I thought maybe he accidentally hid them. He also says that when he goes to google and searches for something, when he clicks on the search results, he is directed somewhere else. Ok, so we know his browser is being hi-jacked. But this I didn't expect. Look at the screen shot below when I remoted into his PC. No icons, no start button. Customer has XP Home Edition. Right-clicking on the desktop does absolutely nothing. I can bring up the task manager and select New Task, but I cannot run explorer.exe. I just get a permissions error. I was able to install Malwarebyte's, but after scanning for 8 seconds, the program just closes. Now I am trying an online scan to see if that works. I can't access My Computer at all. I really can't even run most programs. After Malwarebyte's closes, I cannot open it again. Not even by typing the exact path in the New Task window. I can open IE, but it won't let me access his hard drive or anything. I just keep getting an error about permissions. Obviously not all his permissions are gone since I am able to install software. But his PC is definitely in bad shape. Unfortunately he lives in CA, and I live in NJ, so I have to do this all remotely.
