Usually when I double-click a folder icon, the same window is used to open it, which is exactly the way I want it (I have set the folder options to do this)
But occasionaly, it is desirable to open the folder contents in a new window. For this one has to start again from 'My Computer Is there a registry hack that will add a 'Open in a new window' item to the folder context menu ?
In Win XP/Home/SP2 (all updates applied), when I right click on an item on my desktop (shortcut, file, folder, etc.), or in Windows Explorer (not to be confused with Internet Explorer), then click on "Properties," nothing happens. No properties are displayed; no error message comes up; nothing. When I try this, I am logged in as an administrator.A search of the forum revealed numerous similar questions which have never been solved. The only one that seems to be solved is regarding the properties of the display (i.e. for wallpaper, screensavers, etc.), and that works properly on my system.
The second open used to give me an error, I fixed that by adding a registry at HKCR*, I had to add the Shell entry there, none previously existed, and then added openas, then command and the default key which I have set to"rundll32.exe shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1" The second open takes a while to load (5-10 seconds) and then an "Open With" window appears, but it is the wrong one. It lists the "Recommended Programs" and "Other Programs". I would like the one that when you go over "open with" a list of programs pop up w/o going to this other window. I also downloaded ShellExView, and just to see disabled all of the shell menus, and nothing changed, it worked as it did above.
When I right click a file within the desktop or just Windows Explorer in general I have a few things in the context menu that I have uninstalled but stay in the menu. I've already cleaned the registry with RegCleaner and RegSeeker but the items still remain in my context menu. How do I get rid of these things?
I have accidentally deleted something from my registry resulting in missing "add new item" link in all the menu windows (ie. my computer, desktop menu, file directory menu).
I am using windows xp sp2 and i have an item in the start menu called "reboot computer into safe mode". I don't know how it got there and i want to remove it because its useless and it doesn't work.when i click on it a message pops up "windows cannot find ........... click the start button then click search." yes, I've tried removing it by right clicking on the taskbar and clicking the "taskbar and start menu properties" but there's not option to remove it there. So how do I remove it from the start menu.I know how to reg edit.
I recently purchases a Toshiba Satellite laptop. I use an older version of Magic Tweak, and tweaked most everything I want. One this I can't get rid of is an item on the Start Menu "Buy From Toshiba Direct". It's located directly above the shutdown dialogue in it's own little category, below the Run button. There's no options I can find to remove this.
Recently whenever i right click on anything or anywhere on my computer, be it the desktop or an avi file etc, the list that should normally open instantly, takes a long time to open - this can vary from only a few seconds to 10+ seconds.Once i have waited for the menu to open however and click off it, the next time i right click on the same point it opens instantly. I presume this is because it has cached the menu or something.Ive had a look around the internet.
To submit a selected string (IP) directly to a whois engine from any text, I've been trying to find a way to add an option to the Default "cut/copy/delte/paste" context menu.Does anyone know how to make it happen or where to ask?
I am having Windows 7/WinRar bug problem after installing my new monitor's drivers & software. It only occurs if I have items in the menu that have both an icon and a submenu (TortoiseSVN & TortoiseGit).
I got a little problem of trying to rename a newly created file as hit the delete button always as the rename and delete menu items are right next to each other. Any easy way to move context menu items as i found a little progy called shellex view from nirsoft a while back that lets me easily add or remove context menu items.
Is there a way to select the color of text and icons in a deselected item. The stuff in the appearance tab permits color selection of the text in a selectedbutton -- one that will do something it clicked, but I can find no way to select the color of the text in a button that WILL NOT cause an action if clicked.
Like to change the bold item on the right click menu, how do I do that? For jpg images I want the double click behavior to be Preview which opens the Picture and Fax viewer, and not the Open item.
Opening Multiple files from Context Menu: Using Windows XP Home SP2, file Explorer, whenever I select multiple files (e.g. .doc, .xls, .jpg, or combinations, etc.), right click, and select the "open" command from the Context menu, for each file, before opening, it displays the "move items" dialog (which I cancel) and then a "copy items" dialog (which I cancel). These extra actions do not occur when I open a single file from the context menu. These extra actions do not occur when I select "preview" or any command other than "open". This problem seems related to "shell.dll", open ommand action settings, registry settings, or shell extension hooks. That is as far as I could get in researching this problem. open action settings, registry key changes, or shell extension hooks I should change using program ShellExView to solve this
I've googled this until I'm worn out. I have too many programs in the right-click "open with" menu. Is there any way to remove some? a program maybe? I've posted in other forums and some of the help I get has me reading thru a dozen pages of detailed instructions.
I am running XP-Pro SP2. Does anyone know how I can add an item to the context menu allowing me to delete bypassing recycle bin. I want the context menu item to give the same result as holding down the"SHIFT" key when pressing "DEL"
When I right click my context menu, on a drive or hard disk in Explorer, a small window opens to "configure Roxio Easy Media Creator". This program was installed a while ago and has been used a number of times. This event happens every time I left click on one of my hard drives or optical discs in MS Explorer. I have to cancel each time.
I was changing something in the shell extensions using shellexview to make my right click menus faster. But i accidentally deleted the option to make a new file (like by right clicking in a windows explorer area). How can i get this back?
How does one delete duplicate context-menu entries in XP?For example, if I right click on a .gif image file or .jpg image file, TWO "Preview"'s show up in the right context menu - one bolded, the other not. One opens with one application, the other with a different application.I have already attempted to go to Folder options, File Types, Advanced, and try and "find & fix" from thre, but never came across the dups.
It is possible to add some menu items to the desktop right click menu e.g many softwares allow to add open in notepad to the right click context menu)i want to add items like open cd/dvd rom, close cd/dvd rom or simply to launch applications like firefox.I don't like my desktop full of icons ,so each time i have to go to start menu to open the program i want, it would be very handy if i can add these items to the right click context menu.
I am using Windows XP Pro, all updates applied. In "Regional and Language Options", in the Regional Options tab, under "Standards and formats" I have "English (United Kingdom)".In the Advanced tab under "Language for non-Unicode programs" I also have "English (United Kingdom)".I regularly use a utility that compares discs, folders and files and gives a side-by-side report of the differences. This program is called "Beyond Compare 2" (BC2). This program is non-Unicode and does not work well with file names containing Thai characters, or files containing Thai characters.I investigated the problem and have installed Microsoft's "AppLocale" program:Quote: The AppLocale utility allows users to run a legacy application without changing to the code-page/system locale needed by that particular application.
The improvement which I'd like to suggest is to change the behaviour of the recently used programs part of the Start Menu so that it doesn't include any programs which are already pinned. I have several programs pinned because I use them so often - Word, Excel, Outlook Express etc - so it's pointless and irritating to have them appear twice on the menu because they are on the recent programs list under the pinned list too. This is even more irritating when, as occasionally happens, it is a program which has a unique initial letter which I use to quickly start the program. For example on my Start Menu, Notepad is the only pinned item starting with N, and so I can press "Start, N" to run it. Unfortunately sometimes Notepad ends up in the recently used list, and then because there are two programs beginning with N, my shortcut no longer works.
One point worth noting perhaps, seeing as I've just tried this and it didn't seem to happen ... it only happens at bootup, if you do anything to modify the Start Menu - such as pinning a different item - then all duplicates get removed. And they won't reappear if you use the program again. However as soon as you do a restart, they reappear in the menu, and stay until they are forcibly removed, such as by pinning something else.
a while ago something went wrong with my computer im not sure if its spyware or just something changed my settings. I use Spybot S&D and Ad-aware and Norton Antivirus and have completed scans for all of them. The context menu (right click) does not work on files in Windows Explorer or on the desktop, but works in Start menu, web browser, etc. Also I cannot access Properties for files. I have tried going through File >> Properties, but the Properties box never appears after I have clicked the link.At the same time of this problem my system restore suddenly disabled itself and will not let me enable it (System restore encountered problems trying to enable/disable system restore on one of your drives. Please restart your machine and try again).I have logged on in a different account and the context menu and properties work, so it only seems to be in my account.
When I right click the desktop, and select "New" there is no longer New Bitmap Image. I was thinking it was setup similar to the "Send TO" option, but I see no folder anywhere. When I google it the best I can find is some TweakUI program, which is not what I want.In the registry I found the hive where it resides, but adding here is only temporary. [HKEY_USERSSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerDiscardableP ostSetupShellNew]
Running xp home sp2. I cannot get it to recognize the program Quick Par for par2 files. When I right click a par2 & select "open with", it defaults to the wrong program, and the correct one (Quick Par) is not listed. When I try using the browse option from this point, it ignores my selection of Quick Par's .exe. When I go to WE/tools/folder options file types, I get the same dialogues with the same result. When I try to delete the par2 association from here, hoping to reset it the file to the right priogram, the delete button is dimmed. If I open Quick par & select the file in question, it performs normally, but I want the much more convenient right click context menu option. How can I associate these files with Quick Par, which the pc seems determined to ignore?
On my PC at work running XP Pro, when you click on the start button, after "All Programs", the next 6 items were My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, My Favourites, My Computer & My Network Places. You could select my favourites, select a web site from the sub menu, and internet explorer would open at that page.My PC at home does not have the favourites item, so I have to open explorer first, and select the favourites that way.
I just installed XP professional on my new computer and I'm transferring all of my files, problem is I need a shared video folder(I have a 360 and you need to place videos in the my video folder). how would I make a My Videos folder?
