I had my kid start my computer Win 2000(mistake) and a different desktop came up. It came up with a registry error and that everything was in admin.bak I copied it to desktop and rebooted now everything is missing. Can I recover my files?

View 1 Replies View RelatedLately my pc has experienced lots of different problems. It all started one day when I installed a program named xfire. It was running fine with xfire until I came home from school. Heres a list of the problems:
1. live messneger has forgot my email and runs slowly when i attempt to retype it.
2.Live messneger cannot connect at all. It just comes up with this message straight away
3. The copy of windows I'm running has been classed as an illegal copy by the microsoft website (my pc has a preinstalled installation of windows which was on when it was bought from a store).
4.Many installation programs now come up with errors about missing files.
5.I can't find any viruses with avast,ad-aware or spybot.
6. I uninstalled ie 7 which somehow allowed the normal windows messenger to work without the scripts errors I got before, but now I can't reinstall ie7. The setup always comes up with a missing file error.
recently me my brother and sisters computers all got the same virus it seems and where all on one wireless net work and it started with my sisters laptop sayin the harddrives not instaled wheni start it up and nothing els and my brothers desktop kept feezzeing like my desk top did then mine stoped turning on all togther and would get to the desk top and crash and take 3-4 trys to get started then i did a destructive system recovery on my brothers comp and it is fine perfect like the day we got it then i did it to mine and it started up and worked but kept frezzing on the desk top and then now when i start it up and try to restore from last know workin configuration it says windows/system32/config/system is missing or corrupted hit r to start repair from original cd rom disks and i dont have those is there a way i could find this file and put it on a cd form one comp and fix my comp with it? or do i have to go buy a new windows and hardrive? and when i try to boot it any ways it says system not fully installed error

When i performed a standard recovery program on my computer it was supposed to install the program without affecting any of the data on my system but it my three user profiles became one. I got all of my files but the most important one will not open and a message appears stating that the file is not accessible. The data is still there because the memory is still used up on the hard drive but the properties indicates as there is nothing.

It did something to my registry that now when i boot my computer i don't see any desktop icons on the desktop. All i see is the green windows background with the logo win xp home edition. i tried to get into the system restore by going thru the CTL + ALT+ Del then go in New Task and run to pop up the system restore point window. when i do that I get the system restore point window but the window is blank. View 14 Replies View RelatedHello everyone. I am currently using Windows XP SP2 on a Thinkpad T43 laptop. My main partition which houses windows xp is 34 GB total size. When I highlight the C: drive in "My Computer", it tells me that I have 10GB of free space (therefore I'm using 24GB). When, however, I double click on C: and go into that folder, select all (and yes, I have enabled viewing hidden files/folders), right-click and choose properties, I am then told that C: only contains 15GB of files/folders. Where is this missing 5GB?
View 11 Replies View RelatedHadn't been on the computer for a couple of days, when I did I saw that Norton had found 2 high risk viruses (I don't recall what they were). I selected to fix both of them and it seemed to work. I also noticed that I had about 10 My Computer folders open. It then told me to reboot the computer, which I did. When the computer restarted, it seemed to power up OK, it then said starting Windows, and it went to the log-in screen. (I have two log-ins, one for me and one for my wife). When I click on either one of the two log-ins, it automatically says saving settings and logging off, and then it goes right back to the two log-in selections. I have tried to log-in in Safe Mode, and every other option available to me, and I get the same outcome. I tried the Recovery Disk that came with the computer, and it would not boot from the CD drive, even when I changed the settings to boot from the CD Drive. It tried to star once and I hit R for a Standard Recovery and it seemed to start, then I got a BOOT: Memory overflow error��..Please insert another disk and it just locked up. I rebooted and I could not get back to the recovery menu. It just sits there with a black screen with a blinking cursor and then I get the following error. �Disk Boot Failure, insert system disk and press enter�. And it does the same thing now every time I try it. Is there a way I can just get to normal DOS to try and recover my files?

View 8 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine's hard drive was damaged so I replaced it and installed Windows XP on the new Hard drive. This was fine and no problem. In an effort to salvage some of his files from damaged hard drive I connected it as slave and windows recognised it with out a problem. Now the tricky bit! I was able to access "My Documents" on the old HD but when I tried to open his folder(for his profile) I got an "Access denied" message. He then told me that he had a password on his previous windows profile. Since Windows is not booting from this HD and I don't have an option to enter a password, is there a way to access this folder?
