View 1 Replies View RelatedHadn't been on the computer for a couple of days, when I did I saw that Norton had found 2 high risk viruses (I don't recall what they were). I selected to fix both of them and it seemed to work. I also noticed that I had about 10 My Computer folders open. It then told me to reboot the computer, which I did. When the computer restarted, it seemed to power up OK, it then said starting Windows, and it went to the log-in screen. (I have two log-ins, one for me and one for my wife). When I click on either one of the two log-ins, it automatically says saving settings and logging off, and then it goes right back to the two log-in selections. I have tried to log-in in Safe Mode, and every other option available to me, and I get the same outcome. I tried the Recovery Disk that came with the computer, and it would not boot from the CD drive, even when I changed the settings to boot from the CD Drive. It tried to star once and I hit R for a Standard Recovery and it seemed to start, then I got a BOOT: Memory overflow error..Please insert another disk and it just locked up. I rebooted and I could not get back to the recovery menu. It just sits there with a black screen with a blinking cursor and then I get the following error. Disk Boot Failure, insert system disk and press enter. And it does the same thing now every time I try it. Is there a way I can just get to normal DOS to try and recover my files?

In an effort to salvage some of his files from damaged hard drive I connected it as slave and windows recognised it with out a problem. Now the tricky bit! I was able to access "My Documents" on the old HD but when I tried to open his folder(for his profile) I got an "Access denied" message. He then told me that he had a password on his previous windows profile. Since Windows is not booting from this HD and I don't have an option to enter a password, is there a way to access this folder?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI think I have a corrupted OS in my hands. My computer worked fine yesterday. This morning I added an extended SATA hard drive. When it booted, Windows XP (Pro SP2) startup seemed unusually slow. After I used the hard drive manufacturer's CD to partition the HD and rebooting, I could not get on any of the limited XP accounts because it required a password when it should not have. I am posting this from Firefox, which with a number of other programs unrelated to Microsoft seem to work for the moment. I think I'm missing system files or they are corrupt. I've recently had a Vundo infection which I did clean up, but now I can't even open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.This would be extremely horrifying had I not had past computer problems of equal horror. I beseech all you benevolent souls reading this to provide some suggestions. Is there anything I could do aside from reinstalling XP?
View 7 Replies View RelatedSince January my computer started getting error messages about corrupted files, corrupted registry, and drivers stopped working. I tried different things and ended up formatting my hard drive and reinstalling Windows. Things were fine for a while, but after a week I started getting messages about corrupt files again, having issues with drivers, and now Windows won't shut down properly. Also, the computer powers off of its own accord sometimes. I'm using Windows XP Home Edition SP3. I haven't made any hardware updates recently.
Some of the error messages I've been receiving are. For Bluesoleil (which I have uninstalled and reinstalled) it says that the file is corrupt and to try an anti-virus scan (I tried to copy the message, but the window went off on its own). AVG anti-virus keeps on saying there are no active components, or replacing all the commands with things beginning with @. The drivers for my Logitech Fusion webcam stopped working, but I've reinstalled them, and they work, for now. The Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer kept on corrupting. I've also had the message 'Windows - Registry Recovery One of the files containing the system's Registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternative copy.
