But then everything started lagging and stuff and then froze and I had to restart my computer. When I restarted it, all the icons on the desktop wouldnt work and had no picture. Also when I clicked start and looked under all programs nothings there. All the folders still there too but either its empty or same thing with the desktop. I was lucky enough to be able to get a browser up though and came on to this site through google. im using XP.
View 7 Replies View RelatedCan anyone please help me? I was reorganising my hard drive and decided to restart all my bitccomet downloads so I could put them in a different place. So I did a windows search for all *.bc! files and deleted them from there. The files were deleted and I can't see them anywhere but my hard drive space stayed absolutely the same. I tried everything, deleting temp files, removing system restore, defragmenting, scandisk, searching for them in system and hidden folders, everything. What else can I do? I tried again with a different program and they didn't show up at all. Can somebody help me please?
XP Pro had the OS go bad. It would only start to load and then say the needed files were damage or missing. I removed the hard drive and read it on another XP machine but could find no data (pictures) anywhere under Documents and Settings or anyplace else. So I reinstalled XP Pro to the c:windows directory and it works fine, but can still find no data. Is the data being hidden? How can I get it back?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was forced to rebuild my XP OS on my main/primary hard drive a few days ago, but I "apparently lost" something incredably Precious to me...and Really need some skilled advice, I have 2 hard drives on my computer. Both were partitioned into 2 "drives" each, for a number of reasons. My primary HD had my "old" XP OS on it, and now has my fresh install of XP Pro on it. I used PartitionMagic to merge the 2 drive partitions on that primary HD into one to simplify my system. My slave(2nd)HD only had data on it, in 2 partition drives. Since merging the 2 partitions of my primary HD had gone so successfully(losing nothing in my newly installed XP OS, I decided to also merge my slave(2nd)HD data partitions into one.
Here is the problem. In the process of merging the data HD partitions, it apparently made my computer not recognise that I even have a secondary/slave HD in the My Computer panel....and a "Search" in my Start Menu can not find any of the precious important "data" that was on one of those partitions. What I am missing now, and possibly have lost are many, many Gigs of home movie video and precious moments of my 4 children over 17 yrs growing up from birth to high school. This is(would)be a Huge Lose!! and I am devistated at my stupidity for not burning them to DVD before messing with the partition that contained them. But PM is supposed to, and did, not affect the data when merging my partitioned primary HD, so I thought I'd be safe with the 2nd HD too.
But the weird thing is that even though My Computer and system searchs show NO 2nd HD, or video data......the PartitionMagic program still shows them to exist. PM shows one near 60 Gig C: drive having my OS and a few programs....AND another near 60 Gig "D: drive" with about 27Gig of data on it(which are the family videos). Can someone skilled on this forum, or other areas PLEASE tell me How to get my computer to recognise my 2nd HD D:, and be able to access all it's content video, etc. on it? (unfortunately, I'm at work now and not at that home computer, but Very Much Need to start getting skilled advise about what to do as Soon as I get home to get those precious movies of my kids growing up back again)
I've been collecting raw data night and day for research from a subscribed data provider (Worldscope/Datastream) for nearly 3 weeks. I kept the PC running day and night because I set up the "Request Manager" for data query. Every one or two day, I saved the batches of data downloaded, cleaned the raw data using SAS, and then ran the next query, and so on. Everything had been fine until one day when I came back to the office to do the usual tasks. To my surprise, my PC look very, very much like it's been reinstalled from scratch without saving anything. Symptons that persuade me to conclude this way is:
- No files/folders that I set up on desktop were there
- My settings are all totally different: I used to keep Task Bar on the right, now it's at the bottom. All "Favorites" on Internet Explorer/Firefox/Google Chrome are all gone, nothing there, no favorites, no favorite bars....
- Usually, when I use hotmail, skype, yahoo mail, etc..., I entered username and leave the PC remember it so that I won't have to re-enter username everytime I want to check for mails. Now, when I open hotmail, skype or yahoo, it's all gone just as if somebody reset the internet explorer or something
- Previously, whenever inside WORD/EXCEL I always see files on "Recent Documents", or when clicking on Start Menu, I used to see files on "My Recent Documents". NOW, on that terrible day, there's nothing like that. ALL GONE, it looks just like somebody has reinstalled the PC without letting us know
- Previously, I kept the settings for Internet Explorer, let's say I keep small Google on the top far right corner but removed Google toolbar with many features. Now, Google toolbars with full features are there, just as if somebody reinstalled Internet Explorer and reinstalled Google toolbars with full features without customizing
- All things that often stay on "Recent Documents" or things like that in some applications such as SAS, Stata, etc... are all gone
ONE MORE THING: My university sometimes runs maintenance for all PCs in the School and in the lab. I'm talking about this because perhaps the maintenance automatically reinstalled the whole PC??? I suspect it couldn't???
I'm trying to set up some accounts on my XPSP3 system. I have some accounts set up, but wanted to change some names. I know that if I change an account name, the directory name stays the same, and I didn't want to get confused later on if I was ever doing some stuff on that directory level.I used this page to copy the settings from my account (named "Main") to a new account named "Admin". I had problems getting access to the folder while in the 3rd account, so followed the instructions here to gain access. Once I got it copied, I loaded Admin and found it looked exactly like Main, which is what I wanted. But then, I went into Main and most everything was gone, and XP was acting as if it was a brand new account. I then went into Documents and Settings and found there were now TWO Main accounts. "Main" and "Main.DARKSIDE" (DARKSIDE is the "full computer name" found in System Properties). I can tell by the directory sizes that Main is the fresh, new account I see in my account list and Main.DARKSIDE appears to be my original Main account (being over 6GB in size).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've reinstalled Windows XP SP2 on my old machine. After first restart it told me that there are problems with my D disk's file structure (Windows installation as default - on C disk). I let Windows to check and repair problems on D disk. It took about 30 mins. After done "fixing", windows restarted once more. And what i saw after, was a blank D disk. Almost 250GB of photos, documents, home-made movies and other unrecoverable priceless data were lost... A few hours later, when I calmed down, I've started to download and try variuos file recovery software. But none of it helped me to recover at least one lost file. After week of trying i gave up. I've tried variuos Windows apps, live CDs with recovery tools, Linux apps. None of those helped... So maybe someone has a solution for me, couse I don't know what to try anymore?

View 1 Replies View RelatedIf I RE-INSTALL XP again, will it give me 30 more days? All I need is a few hours, actually, because all I want is to get my stuff off the drive and be done with it...if we're able to do that, we'll probably subsequently give the machine away or sell it for cheap and let somebody else buy a copy of windows for it...so, if I were to re-install XP again, would it give me more time? Also, would there be a way to install the OS without formatting the whole drive (so that my files, pics, etc aren't written over)? If I were to install something like Windows ME, which I'm told doesn't need to be activated, could I retrieve my files THAT way? Or would it have to reformat the whole drive?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem with my 400GB HDD not displaying correctly - it displays as 127GB - in a new install of Windows XP on a seperate drive. My original setup was as follows:400GB SATA HDD with Windows XP as the Operating System plus Data - Single Partition - NTFS. 300GB SATA HDD with purely data - Single Partition - NTFS.I bought a new HDD today (SATA 320GB) and installed it in the PC. The original XP install saw it was installed and offered formatting options from Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management - no formatting options were taken.I then installed Windows XP (non-SP2 install, SP2 has been installed afterwards along with Video Card and Motherboard drivers) to the new HDD without removing the old drives first.

I've been thinking about reformating the HD and reinstalling XP Pro. 2 questions: 1st is; if I back up my HD and then do a restore after reinstalling the os, won't I just restore the glitches I'm trying to get rid of? 2nd question; Since I've never done a reinstall and restore; will all my programs be restored just as if they have been installed (Drivers, programs, etc.); or do I have to reinstall all my programs and then do a restore so I get all the data that changed after they were installed?

View 8 Replies View Related my question concerns an HP Pavillion Desktop with Windows XP Home Edition Operating System. About a week ago my computer was degenerating to such a condition that it would no longer start up properly: it would not load some of the host process properly at start up and the desk top would not appear. The system would hang up, and the only way I could access files was in safe mode.So I decided to do a Full System Recovery and allow the computer to restore itself to some sort of usable condition. Upon completing the initial set up I was presented with, I pressed FINISH and the system froze again, refusing to load the desktop.
So, perhaps foolishly, I attempted a System Recovery from the Recovery DVDs the computer had prompted me to make a while ago, as well as a few more System Restores and Recoveries

No browsers, Trillian, nothing that uses the internet works. I tried running a virus scan, malware scan and found nothing. I tried doing a system restore and it seemed to work, for a brief moment I had the internet again. Then, once more, it stopped working.
Right now, the current speculation is that the onboard network connection is dying. What I'm trying to find out, is if that is possible or not. I'm not worried about having to buy a card - they're cheap. I am worried about buying a new card and it not fixing the problem. Are there other things that can cause this to happen that I can/should look into first?
