I'm trying to set up some accounts on my XPSP3 system. I have some accounts set up, but wanted to change some names. I know that if I change an account name, the directory name stays the same, and I didn't want to get confused later on if I was ever doing some stuff on that directory level.I used this page to copy the settings from my account (named "Main") to a new account named "Admin". I had problems getting access to the folder while in the 3rd account, so followed the instructions here to gain access. Once I got it copied, I loaded Admin and found it looked exactly like Main, which is what I wanted. But then, I went into Main and most everything was gone, and XP was acting as if it was a brand new account. I then went into Documents and Settings and found there were now TWO Main accounts. "Main" and "Main.DARKSIDE" (DARKSIDE is the "full computer name" found in System Properties). I can tell by the directory sizes that Main is the fresh, new account I see in my account list and Main.DARKSIDE appears to be my original Main account (being over 6GB in size).
I've gotten myself in somewhat of a pickle. I have a system that I had built for my husband. I later built a new box for him and decided to sell the previous one. A friend wanted to buy it so I purchased a copy of Windows XP so they'd have their own license, but instead of rebuilding the box, I wiped all the pertinent programs and info they didn't have licenses for and changed the license number to theirs. The problem is, I want to change the user account name under c:documents and settings to reflect the new name.I have created a new ADMIN account, logged in as this account and renamed the account "mitch" to "don". All this does is creates a new user "don" and moves the "my documents" (I have downloaded numerous pdf files that I've created instructing him on how to update antivirus, antispyware and general info on computer use, security, etc. and placed it in the My Documents folder) from "mitch" to don".
I have is that there is something wrong with my Temp folder perhaps. i think it is probably deleted or renamed or something. I looked for it and i did find it but i am not sure what is wrong with it. Is there a way to duplicate data from the OE store folder into another folder in an automatic way, so that there is always an updated backup available?
I was downloading a online game (MapleStory) and browsing the internet while it was downloading. But then everything started lagging and stuff and then froze and I had to restart my computer. When I restarted it, all the icons on the desktop wouldnt work and had no picture. Also when I clicked start and looked under all programs nothings there. All the folders still there too but either its empty or same thing with the desktop. I was lucky enough to be able to get a browser up though and came on to this site through google. im using XP.
Can anyone please help me? I was reorganising my hard drive and decided to restart all my bitccomet downloads so I could put them in a different place. So I did a windows search for all *.bc! files and deleted them from there. The files were deleted and I can't see them anywhere but my hard drive space stayed absolutely the same. I tried everything, deleting temp files, removing system restore, defragmenting, scandisk, searching for them in system and hidden folders, everything. What else can I do? I tried again with a different program and they didn't show up at all. Can somebody help me please?

I lost the password to my administrator's account on our home computer. I called microsoft & they told me they could not help. Is there any way to reset the password on my computer?
I just recently upgraded from XP Home to XP pro, and some files from my old account lost ownership, I know how to take ownership and set the permissions for each file. But, I was wondering if there was a way to take ownership of all the files on the computer without having to do each one individually? I can hightlight a few at once, but all the files I need to take ownership and full control over would take a month. Is there any way to do it to all of them at once???
I've been collecting raw data night and day for research from a subscribed data provider (Worldscope/Datastream) for nearly 3 weeks. I kept the PC running day and night because I set up the "Request Manager" for data query. Every one or two day, I saved the batches of data downloaded, cleaned the raw data using SAS, and then ran the next query, and so on. Everything had been fine until one day when I came back to the office to do the usual tasks. To my surprise, my PC look very, very much like it's been reinstalled from scratch without saving anything. Symptons that persuade me to conclude this way is:
- No files/folders that I set up on desktop were there
- My settings are all totally different: I used to keep Task Bar on the right, now it's at the bottom. All "Favorites" on Internet Explorer/Firefox/Google Chrome are all gone, nothing there, no favorites, no favorite bars....
- Usually, when I use hotmail, skype, yahoo mail, etc..., I entered username and leave the PC remember it so that I won't have to re-enter username everytime I want to check for mails. Now, when I open hotmail, skype or yahoo, it's all gone just as if somebody reset the internet explorer or something
- Previously, whenever inside WORD/EXCEL I always see files on "Recent Documents", or when clicking on Start Menu, I used to see files on "My Recent Documents". NOW, on that terrible day, there's nothing like that. ALL GONE, it looks just like somebody has reinstalled the PC without letting us know
- Previously, I kept the settings for Internet Explorer, let's say I keep small Google on the top far right corner but removed Google toolbar with many features. Now, Google toolbars with full features are there, just as if somebody reinstalled Internet Explorer and reinstalled Google toolbars with full features without customizing
- All things that often stay on "Recent Documents" or things like that in some applications such as SAS, Stata, etc... are all gone
ONE MORE THING: My university sometimes runs maintenance for all PCs in the School and in the lab. I'm talking about this because perhaps the maintenance automatically reinstalled the whole PC??? I suspect it couldn't???
I was hoping someone could help me out with this.I recently changed my account privelieges to be an administrator and after a few hiccups logging in, i finally logged into a new screen and layout but lost all my files - everything from music to Word documents and pictures.

I've reinstalled Windows XP SP2 on my old machine. After first restart it told me that there are problems with my D disk's file structure (Windows installation as default - on C disk). I let Windows to check and repair problems on D disk. It took about 30 mins. After done "fixing", windows restarted once more. And what i saw after, was a blank D disk. Almost 250GB of photos, documents, home-made movies and other unrecoverable priceless data were lost... A few hours later, when I calmed down, I've started to download and try variuos file recovery software. But none of it helped me to recover at least one lost file. After week of trying i gave up. I've tried variuos Windows apps, live CDs with recovery tools, Linux apps. None of those helped... So maybe someone has a solution for me, couse I don't know what to try anymore?
I recently installed a internet cleaning tool called R-Wipe&Clean v5.1 which is located at http://www.r-tt.com/ When I perform the 'Clean Unused Space' which is one of its functions on a selected drive,to my horror all my data were deleted. When I go to check my disk management under admin tools in the control panel, its file system is not stated(FAT32 or NTFS).Please can you tell me how can I recover my lost data.Pls recommend a software to do this

my question concerns an HP Pavillion Desktop with Windows XP Home Edition Operating System. About a week ago my computer was degenerating to such a condition that it would no longer start up properly: it would not load some of the host process properly at start up and the desk top would not appear. The system would hang up, and the only way I could access files was in safe mode.So I decided to do a Full System Recovery and allow the computer to restore itself to some sort of usable condition. Upon completing the initial set up I was presented with, I pressed FINISH and the system froze again, refusing to load the desktop. So, perhaps foolishly, I attempted a System Recovery from the Recovery DVDs the computer had prompted me to make a while ago, as well as a few more System Restores and Recoveries
"Windows Delayed Write Failed Windows was unable to save all the data for the file E:$Mft"started getting this error pop in in WinXP every 10 or 15 minutes for a couple days on my desktop..i would click 'ok' and things seemed fine..however i eventually googled it cuz it's not the most attractive (comforting) mssg
I recently had to do a system recovery on WinXP, and when it was complete, it had renamed all my user profiles to: [USERNAME].[Computer Name] rather than just username.IE: C:Docume~1JohnDoe.My_Computer instead of C:Docume~1JohnDoe Unfortunately, all my settings, documents, financial files, etc are located under the original JohnDoe folder (still present). How can I redirect the JohnDoe log-in to look at the JohnDoe folder rather than JohnDoe.My_Computer?(side note, I set up my computer to share, and when I put in the computer name, I spelled it slightly different than the original. I have changed it back to the original spelling, but with no success. I have also deleted the new folder, just to have it recreated at log in!)
"Application Data" is taking up about 600MB total across all the users on my computer.
Its located: C:Documents and Settings*user name*Application Data
So basically, what is it? What's it do? Is it OK to delete? Etc.
Computer Specs: * System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3 * Computer: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz 2.79 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM
I've recently had a problem when opening many programs such as Microsoft Office, iTunes, etc. When I try to open them Windows Installer appears and there is an error message stating that an error occurred while attempting to create the directory C: DocumentsandSettings/AllUsers/Application Data - then the program fails to open. When I found this Application Data folder and tried to open it there is a message saying it is corrupt and unreadable. Any ideas as how to repair this folder? as I currently cannot open many programs on my computer due to this error. Thanks in advance! btw I have Windows XP Pro
I had set an account with password protection (administrative account), then had to do a repair and now i cannot get into my folders that are password protected. Now how do take the password off that folder and get access to it?
