View 14 Replies View Related my question concerns an HP Pavillion Desktop with Windows XP Home Edition Operating System. About a week ago my computer was degenerating to such a condition that it would no longer start up properly: it would not load some of the host process properly at start up and the desk top would not appear. The system would hang up, and the only way I could access files was in safe mode.So I decided to do a Full System Recovery and allow the computer to restore itself to some sort of usable condition. Upon completing the initial set up I was presented with, I pressed FINISH and the system froze again, refusing to load the desktop.
So, perhaps foolishly, I attempted a System Recovery from the Recovery DVDs the computer had prompted me to make a while ago, as well as a few more System Restores and Recoveries
i have a hard disk that has been recently affected by Win32/Mywife.E@mm virus and all the .doc and xls files have been reduced to 1kb irispective of their initial sizes and when you open the files you get this error; DATA Error [47 0F 94 93 F4 K5] I would like to recover the affected files to their original state, i have searched the internet over and no one seems to have the solution documented currently i am trying to download QuickView Plus (Version 8), i have tried all aplications i can come across, including recover my files, winhex, get data back for ntfs, and r-studio.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi want to restore my computer to its original configuration. i know the in the partition named -: (yeah, its like that) lies the information for it, but the computer on startup will not give me that choice (like pressing f10 to restore)... my question is "how do I restore manually using all that data in there?"

I was running on Windows XP SP2 working fine for me. Last week when I connected to the internet while browsing may be some virus came into it and my Laptop (Acer Aspire 5050) start malfunctioning. I decided to install windows XP SP2 again, while installing it started formatting my hard drive without prompting for it in the mean while it got restarted and I lost my whole data. I again repartitioned it and install windows XP some how.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently had a machine die and am trying to migrate my old data to an external drive, however, many files and directories in my Dirs and Setttings folder will not copy. I get access denied. The most frustrating part of this is the radomness that this happens: some files and dirs copy fine others don't. Those that don't have read-only marked when I go into properties; I uncheck it then apply changes, try to copy and the whole circle starts again.

let's just say me and my PC haven't been getting along very well lately . In the last 2 weeks I've successfully fought off a nasty CWS infection, subsequently upgraded to XP SP2 and all the latest patches, and now this. I was using the machine yesterday morning, and it was exceedingly sluggish. Task Manager showed that TurboTax which I'd left running wasn't responding. I repeatedly attempted to close TT, and 2 minutes later it finally closed. Instead of rebooting immediately, I went to IE to browse the web. A few minutes later the machine came screeching to a halt. No BSOD, just frozen.
I resigned myself to using the reset button. On the reboot, the machine started to load XP, then reset on its own back to the BIOS splash screen. I attempted to reboot normally, same thing. Last known good configuration, same thing. Safe Mode, same thing. So, XP is hosed. I loaded the System Recovery console and started looking around. Dir reports a problem enumerating directories on C:/. Chkdisk reports there are errors it can't fix.
I'm going to go ahead and appologize if I'm a bit unclear anywhere in this post as I'm not 100% certain how to phrase what happened. Also if this isn't in the proper forum.A few days ago I got the following alerts from avast.3/4/2010 9:22:41 PM 1267755761 SYSTEM 1216 Sign of "Win32:Rootkit-gen [Rtk]" has been found in "C:WINDOWSsystem32driversNpfs.SYS" file. I clicked delete when they popped up and proceeded to attempt to restart my computer in safe mode to run mbam to get rid of an "antivirus" program that installed itself on my computer. When I tried to restart though I kept getting an "Invalid form id" error and had to do a system recovery.

I guess at this point i should have sent it to a technician!...anyway i found a number of forum posts with the same problem and followed the instructions to do 'chkdsk' from MS DOS. This looked to be doing stuff.... but now... instead of a blue screen I get nothing...the screen just goes blank!

i have found that my little bro has accidentally formated my hdd and deleted partitions also then he created new partitions and installed XP. now is there any hope or a way that i can recover my previous data ????
View 10 Replies View RelatedMy external hard drive has suddenly stopped working.My computer can see the drive (but not the drive label) and the shortcut I have for the drive will open it but when it does there is nothing there.I have downloaded a few so called free data recovery pieces of software and they can all see the data on my drive with no problems, even stuff I'd previously deleted seems to be available for recovery, however, as soon as you try to recover the data these "free to use" tools need to be registered and paid for.

It show's this message and reboots every single time when starting up Windows XP. I tried recovering the windows from the Recovery CD but it goes to the Gateway Symbol n freezes there and I have to restart the system every single time and try to boot from the recovery CD. it goes searching for recovery date on the hard drive and if not found any it will boot the recovery cd. but it goes to this scan and just freezes there with running the recovery data from the cd.

I was reading through this networking textbook about operating systems and I just found out that a computer can have more than one operating system. I have Windows XP installed through the Data Drivers Recovery CD and that's all I got related to my computer OS WINXP. If I wanted to install Windows XP to another computer that had Windows Vista, with that CD, is it possible, even though it says Data Drivers Recovery CD? Or do I need the actual Installation of WINDOWS XP (and other OS'S?).

Also, under file types it won't let me edit or remove the commands for folder, drive, and file folder.

I tried to repair the OS (XP Home ed.) and 75 % through it hangs up and says that the repair cannot be completed. I would just assume reformat the drive aqnd do a fresh install but there are a bunch of pictures on there I wanna get first. I am wondering if I can hook up the problematic drive to my other pc which is just fine running XP pro SP2 as a slave and be able to look through the files and copy them to me good computer to burn them on dvd so I won't run into this again. I know there has to be aprogram that allows you to examine files on a hard drive that won't boot or is currupt from a good PC and explore files so as to recover them.

The saving factor is that the partition that may have formatted was only 20GB out of 200GB and the rest was unallocated free space. I have installed a temporary instance of WinXP to use data recovery software and recover the majority of files from the drive (it is installed on the non-corrupted
drive).
My hard drive crashed beyond salvage. I bought a new hard drive, installed it and used my recovery disks to get the basics back. It is a Sony Vaio laptop (PCG-Gr390, to be specific). It has Windows XP, pre SP1/SP2. When I installed it, I went through the formatting process and formatted it for the first time, being that it's a new HD. Everything worked as expected, but I have yet to update anything because I can not successfully connect to the Internet.
All efforts to create a connection were unsuccessful.Next to my laptop is a slow Dell desktop, runnung a fully updated XP operating system. Using the same cable modem, connection to the Internet was fine with the desktop for both wired and wireless, but not the newly formatted laptop. My ethernet jack and wireless card on the laptop are working (according to the device manager).
I read that clearing the prefetch data cache folder of all its files will speed up start up? Is this true and is it safe?
View 6 Replies View RelatedThis is not for myself, as you see, I wouldn't be online right now if I couldn't start my computer up.This person that i know is having a start up problem with her computer (windows). Whenever she turns on the computer, it takes her to her computer asking her whether she wants to do safe mode or start windows normally or whatever. Whatever she chose, it took her straight back to that window asking her about that stuff. My information is not sufficient as she is not the kind of patient person even for her own good to explain stuff to me. Secondly, she is not a computer geek.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI rebooted, and instead of coming up directly to my desktop, it came up with the log-in screen for the Administrator and me. I selected me, and it came up in safe-mode with the cmd shell. Ok, this is important... I went into msconfig, and safe-mode was NOT selected. So thinking that I needed to do a repair, I inserted my original XP disc and booted into the recovery console. First, I did the normal stuff, like chkdsk and so forth. I also looked at my boot.ini. Everything appeared normal. So I rebooted, same problem.
Went back into the recovery console and did a repair. Everything went along smoothly and guess what! After the first reboot, it gave me the infamous "You are in Safe Mode... you can't do what you are doing in safe mode... you are a bad person and you need to be punished". (Obviously, I'm paraphrasing here). And I'm in the endless reboot cycle. So, I've tried everything (almost) and I would prefer not to do a full re-install. I tried using bootcfg, but this didn't help any since it doesn't say "safe-mode". (Although I did go through the motions). I also deleted my boot.ini and it gave me an error message (no boot.ini, or whatever), and still got stuck in the endless reboot cycle. I also did a fixboot, which didn't help either. And I attempted to do a fixmbr, but I got scared from the "if you do this you are really screwed" message, and didn't proceed.
After starting my pc i noticed what 99% of data in my hard disk has vanished. it used to be only a 1GB free space there and now it shows 38,8 out of 39 GB. I tried system restore in normal and safe mode. .Thorough description of situation:
PC runs on Windows Xp SP2. It has 2 hard drives where the biggest one is paritioned into three drives: one for Windows installation, second was used for installation files of other programs (I kept Program Files folder there) and the alst one was dedicated for data storage. So the problem occured with the second drive. and as a result i do not have most of my programs running.
When I did a system recovery on my new Compaq Laptop, it lost the lines that allow me to boot into safe mode, or ANY mode. It just goes right into Wondows XP. I know there were lines that should be in the boot.ini to do this.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi did a previous thread of my computer being slow, ignore that one... i got a much serious problem. Someone told me to go into safemode so i just tried to reboot in safe mode. It wouldn't reboot all i saw was a black screen with a mouse cursor so i press the reset button, but this computer is not stable i always haev to press the reset button. Now when i try to restart it jsut reboots again and again. It brings me this blue screen saying STOP:c0000218 {registry file failure} the hive file or sumthing like that and systemrootsystem32configdefault and then it restarts. When i try to go to safe mode i see all these .sys files loading or sumthing and then it gets stuck after like the 20th one. Im on windows 2000, i installed 2000 in cases like these. i found help on a different site. It told me to go to recovery mode, i instert my XP CD and boot it from taht but that doesn't work for sum reason. SO i got my XP boot disks and it works!! BUTTT i go to recovery mode and it restarts and nothing happens! just a plain restart! what can i do!!!

I've recently had a problem when opening many programs such as Microsoft Office, iTunes, etc. When I try to open them Windows Installer appears and there is an error message stating that an error occurred while attempting to create the directory C: DocumentsandSettings/AllUsers/Application Data - then the program fails to open. When I found this Application Data folder and tried to open it there is a message saying it is corrupt and unreadable. Any ideas as how to repair this folder? as I currently cannot open many programs on my computer due to this error. Thanks in advance! btw I have Windows XP Pro
