View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a computer that will not boot even in safe mode for some reason. I tried to repair the OS (XP Home ed.) and 75 % through it hangs up and says that the repair cannot be completed. I would just assume reformat the drive aqnd do a fresh install but there are a bunch of pictures on there I wanna get first. I am wondering if I can hook up the problematic drive to my other pc which is just fine running XP pro SP2 as a slave and be able to look through the files and copy them to me good computer to burn them on dvd so I won't run into this again. I know there has to be aprogram that allows you to examine files on a hard drive that won't boot or is currupt from a good PC and explore files so as to recover them.
View 8 Replies View RelatedSince Windows Vista™ (formerly code named Longhorn) was announced there have
been many articles in the news letters and Forums I visit suggesting that
SuperFetch in Vista™ can be initiated in XP SP2 with tweaks for faster
performance by editing the registry by editing the Session Manager settings
in the Current Control Set.The most common view was set prefetch in Current Control Set to enable dword value 3.Others suggest purging the prefetch folder frequentlyAs far as I know the prefetch in XP SP2 is the same as it has been in Windows version from way back and it is not possible to enable the superfetch that is in Vista™.
what is the prefetch folder and what is it used for?
View 16 Replies View Related my question concerns an HP Pavillion Desktop with Windows XP Home Edition Operating System. About a week ago my computer was degenerating to such a condition that it would no longer start up properly: it would not load some of the host process properly at start up and the desk top would not appear. The system would hang up, and the only way I could access files was in safe mode.So I decided to do a Full System Recovery and allow the computer to restore itself to some sort of usable condition. Upon completing the initial set up I was presented with, I pressed FINISH and the system froze again, refusing to load the desktop.
So, perhaps foolishly, I attempted a System Recovery from the Recovery DVDs the computer had prompted me to make a while ago, as well as a few more System Restores and Recoveries
After starting my pc i noticed what 99% of data in my hard disk has vanished. it used to be only a 1GB free space there and now it shows 38,8 out of 39 GB. I tried system restore in normal and safe mode. .Thorough description of situation:
PC runs on Windows Xp SP2. It has 2 hard drives where the biggest one is paritioned into three drives: one for Windows installation, second was used for installation files of other programs (I kept Program Files folder there) and the alst one was dedicated for data storage. So the problem occured with the second drive. and as a result i do not have most of my programs running.
Just wondering... lotta stuff in there.....some say yes, some say no!!

A friend of mine has recently bought a new computer with Windows XP Home. Her old computer is a Window 98. She wants to transfer some files from her old one to the new one. I know that the Windows XP has a Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, but though I've done a search for that on the Microsoft site, I've not found any real information about the process. It does mention how to use floppies or other removable storage, but can this be done with USB cable, or something? If so, how would I hook it up? Will I see an option to choose to use a USB cable for the transfer in the Wizard? From the information I found, it does not even mention using a USB, but I find it hard to believe that one could NOT.

In the instructions for a game (Black & White, in fact) I've found the following instructions to stop the video flickering:To adjust the read-ahead cache:
1. At the Windows 95/98/ME desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, then choose Properties from the pop-up menu. 2. Click the Performance tab then click File System…. 3. Click the CD-ROM tab, then click on the Optimise access pattern for:

The maximum size of your Internet Explorer browser cache is ### megabytes. Generally, cache sizes above 80 megabytes waste disk space and can actually cause slower performance.SolutionsHow to adjust the IE cache sizeStart Internet Explorer Select Tools | Internet Options | General tab Under Temporary Internet Files click the Settings button. In the box for the amount of disk space to use, enter a value between 5 and 80 megabytes. Click OK to accept the changes.Since I have a very fast Internet Connection I have found that setting my temp Internet Files to one Megabyte gives me the best performance.
