Transferring Data From Old Personal Computer With SE
Apr 24, 2005
I'm sure this has been covered many times, but I'm new to this NG and I just got a new computer with XP on it. The thought of transferring data from my old Personal Computer with SE to XP seems daunting. I thought I could hook up my old HD with a USB 2 external enclosure and transfer data that way. Would that work?
A friend of mine has recently bought a new computer with Windows XP Home. Her old computer is a Window 98. She wants to transfer some files from her old one to the new one. I know that the Windows XP has a Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, but though I've done a search for that on the Microsoft site, I've not found any real information about the process. It does mention how to use floppies or other removable storage, but can this be done with USB cable, or something? If so, how would I hook it up? Will I see an option to choose to use a USB cable for the transfer in the Wizard? From the information I found, it does not even mention using a USB, but I find it hard to believe that one could NOT.
I am new to this site and I come here today to ask a question, perhaps someone here will be able to offer a bit of advice.I have a toshiba laptop, running xp pro sp2, 80GB hard drive.Hard drive inoperable due to bad sectors. My hard drive was partitioned into several sections with the C: section containing the os and the D: section containing my data. I could not boot my system so I tried reinstalling os on C: section again, it required a format. I formatted the C: section and then attempted to reinstall os, no luck!Using a third party diagnostic CD I see that my data on the D: partition is still available and intact. The diagnostic disk creates a makeshift os which allows for very limited manipulation of information on hard drive. Since I can not install os onto bad hard drive section C how can I transfer data from the section D: partition to either a new hard drive or to a storage medium?
I'm having a little problem with my USB ports. I know they are USB 2.0 but are recognized as 1.0. Everytime I plug something in, it says "this device can run faster if connected to a 2.0 port" or something like that. Is there anyway to fix this, cause im transferring data very slowly and its very annoying. I tried to update the driver but it said there is no better or newer driver available.

I have a really old computer; not to sure what the system specs are like other than it being made by Tiny and having a 4 GB HDD. My mum wants to use the word processor now and then but the printer has broken and she would rather not buy another; partly because drivers may be an issue and partly becuase I have unused retail copies of Windows ME and 2000 that a couple of mates donated and can print off at my Dad's house. The issue with 98 is that I want to be using USB sticks when necessary to transfer word documents over to my Dad's computer running XP to print but 98 does not have the necessary drivers and I think it is impossible to get any; from what I understand that what 98 SE was for.
I am cloning my existing hard drive in my laptop (sata) to an external hard drive (pata) in preparation for installing a new larger hard drive (sata)in the laptop. Can I, or how do I transfer the cloned data from the external (pata) to the new internal hard drive (sata)? Thanks in advance and I apoligize if this is a rudimentary question as this is my first time attempting something like this.
Just about to take delivery of new super dooper desktop with XP pro already installed.I will immediately network to my oldish, also XP Pro machine, and of course would love to simply copy all the junk on my boot drive without reinstalling loads and loads of software, finding the keys and passwords (all legit) and upgrading updates and indeed updates to updates! When I only had a 12gb boot drive before and now will have much more than 160gb available, transferring a bit of redundancy, (tho' I know not ideal), would be worth the days of headaches and thumb twiddling.
Having a problem with my friends personal computer. He has a Fujitsu Siemens 'Cordant' Personal Computer which was not booting up at all. I managed to fix this and install the xp home recovery disk that came with the personal computer. Unfortunately he now needs XP Pro which hangs at "press any key to boot from cd" when i put it in his machine. The cd itself is in perfect working order and will boot on other computers. All hardware is fine as XP home installed fine and when i try to press enter to boot from cd, the computer makes a beeping noise so the keyboard is recognized.
I have a laptop with an 80gb hdd and 25gb used. It used to be really quick but now it has gone really slowly apart from Defragment and Disk Cleanup what can I do.

I have transferred a Hard Drive into another computer and thought I had to re-install Windows (XP Home) - this I did.In so doing I created another Folder - Windows2 so as not to overwrite anything. I have a Windows folder as well.I also still have a Windows98 Folder on this drive.I cannot access the latest e-mails in the new configuration - or anything else for that matter and know that I am going to have to reinstall all programs. How and where do I find those missing e-mails, or can I uninstall this new version and revert to the old one?

My daughter shut the power off during shutdown. Now the Personal Computer won't reboot. The screen comes up asking what mode you want to boot up in.No matter what you select it loops back. The Personal Computer is a Gateway with Windows XP Media. It didn't come with recovery cds, only blank ones to make your own.I just got off the phone with CS and they are sending me recovery cds but it will take about a week to get.Is there any other way to fix this without using the recovery cds ?
The other day I was sitting there playing world of war-craft like any other day, when my personal computer just freezes and nothing works, so I do a hard boot.I was using windows vista at this stage and every time the loading bar would come up, it would go away like windows was about to load and then it would just sit on a endless black screen. After going into safe mode and doing a system restore I was able to get in to windows once before it froze up on another game, I spent 2 days trying to get into windows before reformatting to windows xp.So, after reformatting and putting windows xp on, everything seemed fine, did my windows updates and all the updates for my mobo etc, had the personal computer running for about 6 hours with no problems, go to play world of war-craft and within 5 mins my personal computer froze again. So back to the same problem, except this time the bar loads and i get a blue screen that comes up sometimes, but its only up for about 1 second before windows restarts again. It just keeps going to the windows loading bar, will freeze for 2-3 seconds, continue to load and then restart again by itself. I left it on for about an hour of cycling through by itself but windows still wont load.World of war-craft is on a 2nd HD that hasn't been reformatted, I thought this might be the cause but my personal computer also froze when I was just browsing the net and had the same problem loading windows.Any suggestions? because I'm a bit lost at the moment with what to do, the only other thing I can think of to be the cause would be my ram or gfx card dying? but I hope that's not the case.
I am using Windows XP Home SP3.I have just bought a new 250gb external Hard disk and would like to back up my entire personal computer in case of any viruses or Hard Disk problems.I have heard of Acronis but it's 39.99 is there a any free software out there?
Have 2 personal computer's both have XP SP2 using eTrust AZ Armor with it's FW being a rebadged ZoneAlarm or so I've been told. I've checked the settings on each personal computer FW, and they appear to be the same. Also, on each personal computer in Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Multimedia, Show Pictures is selected. There is a car forum that we like and some of the members post image attachments, but from one personal computer the images cannot be viewed. Images are able to be viewed that are posted directly into the message, but the ones with attachments show up as Attached Thumbnails with a blank rectangular box below. On the other personal computer, on the exact same posting I see Attached Images and in the rectangular box are .jpg links that I can open.Any suggestions as to what settings need to be changed to be able to view them from both personal computer's?
After getting this downloader virus which was picked up by norton and dispensed with, the personal computer began to slow up to a crawl. I am wondering if damage or sorts was done before it was removed. The available physical memory dropped to around 30M and the virtual memory is to the max and that seems to help. The operating system is XP pro with service pack 2.
I know you all are always up to date onto personal computer things and news about it.But lets fly up the imaginations, and wonders.Lets say, There's a new windows version, the newest, the 2008.What would you hope that in that version would appear? What hopes you have! what do you think it will appear.
I am going to upgrade my Personal Computer, my current Personal Computer is old and i am thinking of replacing the Hard Drive, the thing is that my current Hard Drive has XP on it and i was supplied no disk. My current Personal Computer Does not support 2 Hard Disk so i cannot back up, so what can i do, is there a way i can make a XP disk from the XP files on my Personal Computer?
My grandson and my daughter decided that Personal Computer weighted down so decided to clean it up.What they didn't do was add/remove programs and delete most junk first. What they did do was try to reinstall XP on top of XP.I was thinking they would delete, reformat and re-install.We now have message saying that XP cannot load windows, because a Dll is missing.Cannot get into safe mode to get into control panel to delete, reformat and reinstall.Have genuine microsoft windows XP.Or any way I can get windows 98 back onto machine,to restart Windows for which I have a boot disk.Exactly what have I to do to try to get machine operational.

I got the blue screen of death on my Gateway laptop. I tried every option such as booting to safe mode, last good configuration...etc to get windows to boot but no luck...once I get the windows xp logo it changes to blue death screen.I purchased a laptop hard drive enclosure and pluged the laptop hard drive into it. Next I attached the hard drive enclosure via USB to my desktop but good not read the data on the hard drive. The laptop has a Recovery Partition and Operating System Partition. I am able to both partitions as drive letter "f" and "g" for example, with drive "f" being the Recovery partition and drive "g" the operating system. When I click on the drive "g" the system locks up and I have to unplug the hard drive enclosure and start over again with no luck.
please help me understand how to transfer my files/programs, etc. from my current Sony win. 98 with USB port but no CD burner, to a Dell win XP (yet to be delivered).i'd like to take as much as i can from my current machine into the new machine when it arrives.
with some of the smaller and more *necesary* programs operating from drive c (internal), my drive usage runs at about 60% used. Somehow however, I'll be typing away, and a message comes up saying I have low drive space. In the space of a few seconds my drive goes from 60%-ish to 100% full! I search, check ALL folders but NOTHING I can see is new/downloaded/self-created.
Is this rapid and unfortunately very - daily - regular rise and fall by over 8gig normal? Usually I have to run ALL my bug/spyware/system doctor/windows doctor type software before it goes away, but then sometimes it just goes away by its'self with no input from me at all. Please tell me that this is something easily sorted, because when usingn space hungry prog's like p/shop or audition it stops me from saving/changing doc's and simply allows me all in all to do sweet FA until IT clears it's own mind up as to how big it is! Is this an XP issue
