Registry Backup Similar To Win98-Scan Reg
Jan 30, 2007Win 98 / SE has a ScanReg.exe application, which on start-up picks up the 2 Registery files (System.Dat, User.Dat) plus 2 ini files (System.ini and Win.in) and compresses trhem as *.cab file - RBxxx.cab. The files are stored at WindowsSysBckUp folder. In case of improper shut-down or some just installed program cause problem, one can boot with F8 to command propmt and RESTORE the registery. Is there a similar functionality in Win XP - Professional or if not, any 3rd party software developer has created a software for that. Restore from Windows mode generally does not work and in case the registery is totally messed up, one does not have the running system, so the question of restoring the system, using SYSTEM RESTORE application does not arise.

CCleaner - Restore The Registry From The Backup?
Apr 23, 2006CCleaner was featured last April 18, 2006 on CNET's Download Dispatch Windows edition with a subject ''Mr. Sparkle'', and because of it I had downloaded the software and had my PC Cleaned. I had also read CNET's how to use CCleaner and even had followed it while I was cleaning my PC.
One problem though I had observed on that how to is that though it advise you to have the registry backed up so that just in case something goes wrong, you would be able to restore the registry back, it lacks the procedure on how to restore it. After cleaning my PC, noting happens though and I am glad my PC is still running fine with a cleaner environment. But let say if I find something wrong later, how will I able to restore the registry from the backup? Anybody here who knows how? It seems also that I did not find this option inside CCleaner.
System Restore Is Nessessary For Best Backup Of Registry

I've been told that doing a System Restore does not wipe out all new entries either.
I was told that the only way to put a Registry back as it was before new entries,is to do a System State backup using the Microsoft Backup utility.

Oct 17, 2005My main computer's installation of windows (XP Home Edition OEM SP2) is completely dead. Due to a driver problem (to do with having alcohol 120% and daemon tools installed) it resolutely refuses to boot up, even in safe mode. I've tried everything to fix it, including several repair installatios of windows and much rummaging around with the recovery console, but it's gone, I need to reinstall.
Windows is installed on it's own partition, so I don't mind terribly having to reinstall, but one thing I'm annoyed about is having to reinstall all my programs (that are on their own partition too) when I lose the registry.

Apr 27, 2008I use acronis as a restore tool and have never had a problem restoring the entire operating system. I had this individual program that was corrupted and I reinstalled it from the image I made using acronis. However, the program failed to appear in the add/remove section of windows. I beleive that I have to manually reinstall the registry entry of the program in order for it to appear in the add/remove section. My question is: is there a registry backup utility that'll let me reinstall individual entries? Something that's a no-brainer also as I'm not completely comfortable fooling around with the registry.

Jun 21, 2008I've looked at over 20 related forums on this site, all which haven't solved my problem. All I found useful was the turn off auto update trick that seemed to have brought my minimum usage down from 15 to 0-5.My computer reports free of malware, spyware, and viruses. I use Norton Antivirus, Spybot, Adaware, Panda Activescan, and AVG Anti spyware and have no processes running.When CPU spikes, only possible associated programs are services.exe and svchost.exe, but they only go to 20 at most. System idle process reports normal at 98-99. I'm using Sensors View Pro, which tells me my CPU isn't overheating because it stays at a consistent 3 degrees Celsius. I tried resetting the BIOS, that didn't work. I checked the IDE controllers in device manager to see if they had the correct transfer modes, which they did. I tried updating my MOBO drivers. I can't think of anything else I've tried at the moment.
The biggest thing that stumps me is that my computer isn't sluggish until I start gaming. I only play Battlefield 2, which doesn't require much resources to play and only sucks up about 400 mb of memory. The thing that aggravates me is when my Frames per second average between 10 and 25 and everything gets really REALLY slow. At first I just thought is was a problem with my gaming, but then I realized the bigger problem that my CPU jumps up and down like a heart monitor. I've attached my HiJack this log just in case
I really appreciate it if anyone can assist in solving my problem. I've really done a lot of research not just on this website and results are still inconclusive obviously. It's driving me crazy because I feel like I've tried everything so I feel it must be a hardware issue and then I don't know why it would be...GOSH! The application loads some stuff and then proclaims "Setup is starting windows" and there it sits forever.When launching it from the system with Win98 installed, it tells me that the CD is for upgrade only (in spite of what the written instructions say) and that it can't install because it can't find C:WindowsWINNT32Win9xUPGW95UPG.DLL. Never mind that Win98 doesn't have a WINNT directory.So what's the next step? Do I create this directory and attempt to find the DLL and copy it to it?

Aug 6, 2005I was told I could take a hard drive from a windows 98 computer and the person is buying a new Windows xp so I can hook up the win 98 hard drive as a slave to the new computer with win xp so I can drop and drag or cut and past files that they want off the 98 hard drive put on their new computer. Now If their new computer with the win xp on it, if there is an ide cable going to the hard drive and nothing else then I can hook up the win 98 hard drive to the same ide cable as a slave and no problem.
However if the windows xp computer has the hard drive on the ide cable and also the cd-rom then is it ok just to hook up another ide cable to their mother board and hook the hard drive from the windows 98 computer on the end of that ide cable as the master? and by turning the computer off, and then hooking up the hard drive and then turning the computer back on it should reconize the windows 98 hard drive in my computer right away right?
If I would have to put the windows 98 hard drive in the new computer on a seperate ide cable is it ok to have it as master? cause the hard drive that is already in it would be master to but it would be on a different ide cable. I am hoping the new computer just has the hard drive on an ide cable by itself so I can just hook the other one up as a slave and get the files and be done with it. How ever if someone could give me a couple or three scenario's with ide cables and hooking this up I would be very much appreciatetive.

1) Networked 2 laptops: a win98SE and winXP Home Edition +SP2, using TCP/IP
2) Both have filesharing enabled,etc, both 'ping' to router and to each other
3) the XP can open, read, write, etc to the win98 - no access problems at all.
4) the win98 can ping and 'see' the named XP computer itself, but cannot 'see' any of its files:
5) Not a firewall problem: tried with firewalls off (Zonealarm) and checked winXP firewall off.
6) Not a router problem: Same situation as above with a direct connection of crossover cable.
7) Netbios is enabled on the XP
8) It is apparently 'just' a permission problem within the XP
Damaged 98 On Start Up / Close Option Goes To Win98
Jun 18, 2005(1) When I start up my computer, I get a menu asking me to choose from either (a) Continuing to install XP or (b) Use 98. I don't want this menu, I just want to go straight to 98.
(2) When I choose the option to go to Windows 98, I get another menu (every time!) telling me to choose between NORMAL or SAFE MODE or a bunch of other options. I just always want to go into Windows 98 using NORMAL, I don't want to have to choose NORMAL every time.
(3) Once I get into Windows 98, I cannot shut it down without holding down the power button on the computer. If I choose the Shut Down option, it just restarts the computer. If I choose Restart it also restarts the computer. I can choose Standby and it will go into Standby mode, but I want to be able to shut down my computer.
(4) Internet Explorer is not displaying websites correctly. In addition other windows on the computer look funny. For example, all of the text on Yahoo's website looks too large, even though I set the text size to "Smallest". Also, if I open up any folder, the icons are all overlapping.
Backup Software Which Will Backup Just The Changed Elements Of The Past File
Jun 22, 2005I want to backup my PC for disaster recovery and then do an incremental backup each night to a USB hard drive. I tried Retrospect which came with the USB hard drive. I couldn't get it to work to well. I've been using the MS backup utility. With this software it seems any new email causes changes my large Outlook PST file and the whole
file is backed up again. I've been trying to find backup software which will backup just the changed elements of the pst file and have tried downloading a trial version of
continuity@work from Mobiliti who claim to be able to just backup the changes to a PST file. I left continuity@work running overnight and had to stop it as it was only 50% through the backup this morning. It calls it synchronization rather than backup and from the error messages it seems that it doesn't create a shadow image before backing up as several files were not backed up as they were in use.
