I am going to do this: http://rsivanandan.wordpress.com/200...ttings-folder/
Move the Documents and Settings folder to a different drive (sicn the guy who fixed my computer didn't do RAID and so I now have three partitions, of which everything is installed in one).
So... I backed up my registry by doing Export. I want to know how I can fix the registry from this if something goes wrong. I need to be prepared before the computer breaks.
Would like some info on the advisability of using registry fixing software. My biggest fear is that in the process of attempting to fix something, it will cause a severe problem such as having to have the hard drive reformatted. For those who have done this, what kind of problems did you run into, if any? MS Windows XP Home edition with Service Pack 2 I.E - 6.0 CPU Intel Pentium 4A 2400MHz MOB - Intel Silver Reef Chipset Intel Brookdale System Mem 512 MB (DDR SDRAMM) Nvidia GeForce FX5200
I want to backup my Autocomplete User Names and Passwords, Web Addresses, and Forms entries in the registry. What are the registry addresses for these items?
I am not sure if my computer has this capability. If there a good program to download and run. Currently, I use Acronis trueimage to backup the entire drive (my software drive as I have them partitioned).
Everytime I attempt to install it will present me with a message stating the following: Service Pack 2 setup could not backup registry key HKLMSoftware MicrosoftCurrentVersionUninstallQ282010 to file C:Windows$NtServicePackUninstall$ eg01617. 5: Access Denied
I have a backup.reg file (C:Documents and Settingsmy nameMy Documents eg backup.reg) that is 82MB that still has fragments after being defragged. I would like to simply delete this file since it's been a few months since I made the backup, and I'm not experiencing any problems with my registry. Is it safe to delete this backup?
My operating system is WinXP Pro SP3 (build 2600) fully updated, 1 GB upper memory, 2.4 Intel Celeron Processor, Motherboard ECS P4M800PRO-M478 1.0, two CD/DVD drives (LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-411S and SONY DVD RW DRU-190A ), and an external Maxtor hard drive backup.
For the last 2 months, when I backup the registry or the hard drive and reboot, the PC performs poorly - i,e, A light on the front of the PC begins an unending cyclic blinking. Playing a video on the internet results in interrupts in the video and sound synchronized with the blinking. The Solitaire card game has interrupts when cards are dealt. Typing is sticky in MsWord 2007 The blinking and sticky PC performance can be ended by reinstalling the backed up registry and rebooting.
CCleaner was featured last April 18, 2006 on CNET's Download Dispatch Windows edition with a subject ''Mr. Sparkle'', and because of it I had downloaded the software and had my PC Cleaned. I had also read CNET's how to use CCleaner and even had followed it while I was cleaning my PC.
One problem though I had observed on that how to is that though it advise you to have the registry backed up so that just in case something goes wrong, you would be able to restore the registry back, it lacks the procedure on how to restore it. After cleaning my PC, noting happens though and I am glad my PC is still running fine with a cleaner environment. But let say if I find something wrong later, how will I able to restore the registry from the backup? Anybody here who knows how? It seems also that I did not find this option inside CCleaner.
My main computer's installation of windows (XP Home Edition OEM SP2) is completely dead. Due to a driver problem (to do with having alcohol 120% and daemon tools installed) it resolutely refuses to boot up, even in safe mode. I've tried everything to fix it, including several repair installatios of windows and much rummaging around with the recovery console, but it's gone, I need to reinstall.
Windows is installed on it's own partition, so I don't mind terribly having to reinstall, but one thing I'm annoyed about is having to reinstall all my programs (that are on their own partition too) when I lose the registry.
Win 98 / SE has a ScanReg.exe application, which on start-up picks up the 2 Registery files (System.Dat, User.Dat) plus 2 ini files (System.ini and Win.in) and compresses trhem as *.cab file - RBxxx.cab. The files are stored at WindowsSysBckUp folder. In case of improper shut-down or some just installed program cause problem, one can boot with F8 to command propmt and RESTORE the registery. Is there a similar functionality in Win XP - Professional or if not, any 3rd party software developer has created a software for that. Restore from Windows mode generally does not work and in case the registery is totally messed up, one does not have the running system, so the question of restoring the system, using SYSTEM RESTORE application does not arise.
I use acronis as a restore tool and have never had a problem restoring the entire operating system. I had this individual program that was corrupted and I reinstalled it from the image I made using acronis. However, the program failed to appear in the add/remove section of windows. I beleive that I have to manually reinstall the registry entry of the program in order for it to appear in the add/remove section. My question is: is there a registry backup utility that'll let me reinstall individual entries? Something that's a no-brainer also as I'm not completely comfortable fooling around with the registry.
I installed XP-Home edition on a computer and did a file search for any file for Scan Registery and ScanDisk, but did not find any such file For Win 98/SE, the O/S at the start of computer, backs up the Registery - by defalut 5 back-ups, 1 for each day, but can be increased up to 99. If the Registery get's corrupted (or you want to remove all traces of a just installed and uninstalled program, you can shut down the unit, re-boot with F8 to Command Prompt and run: ScanReg (DOS Mode) and restore the 4 files: System.dat, User.dat, System.ini and User.ini Is there a similar functionality available in XP - Home Edition? Is there such file Win XP version?
I think i did something really wrong... i had a registry backup on my desktop and i wanted to move it to another area on my computer. I clicked on it and it said : are you sure you want to add the information in C: blah blah registry backup.reg to the registry? I dont know what i was thinking but i clicked on yes. And now i have several problems.... too many to mention but here's a few: anything windows site or microsoft site related cant get in.
i created a backup file for my registry, and am trying to restore it due to minor changes i have made, but when i try to import, i get this error message: "cannot import (file name). Not all data was successfully written to the registry. some keys are open by the system or other processes." what does this mean? and how do i fix it?
After restoring a computer and backing up files, once the computer is back up and running should I have a foldercalled "My Backup 1408-08 2353" or should I have a single backup file called backup.bkf? I'm trying to help someone, and they have a folder with the files already available instead of a single backup.bkf file. He wants to restore everything to the original location before the computer restore. How can he do that with the folder he has instead of a backup.bkf file? The restore wizard is asking for a .bkf file to place everything in the original locations, and he doesn't have that.
Just tried updating Norton to 2006, and now every exe file I have on my computer has become an lnk file. Have tried running the fix from dougknox.com, and tried changing regedit.exe to regedit.com in command prompt mode.
I want to backup my PC for disaster recovery and then do an incremental backup each night to a USB hard drive. I tried Retrospect which came with the USB hard drive. I couldn't get it to work to well. I've been using the MS backup utility. With this software it seems any new email causes changes my large Outlook PST file and the whole file is backed up again. I've been trying to find backup software which will backup just the changed elements of the pst file and have tried downloading a trial version of continuity@work from Mobiliti who claim to be able to just backup the changes to a PST file. I left continuity@work running overnight and had to stop it as it was only 50% through the backup this morning. It calls it synchronization rather than backup and from the error messages it seems that it doesn't create a shadow image before backing up as several files were not backed up as they were in use.
i was reading an old thread about the log on log off loop because my computer was expirencing the same difficulties, i managed to fix the promblem and log back on, but the end of the old thread i was reading(expired now) said to run hijack this and to send in the log file, so im sending mine now to avoid this promblem in the future, can someone tell me if there is still something wrong with my computer and i have a dell inspiron 1100 sp3.

after fixing my netbook because of a blank screen, there is no sound from the computer. I checked the sound settings and everything seems to be alright. Also the recovery program seems to be gone.
I have an external hard drive that I use quite often. Recently after I restarted my computer, all the partitions on my main hard drive were assigned a drive letter and my external's drive letter was bumped from F: to J: So now F: is set to the 47MB partition built-in to Dells and I can't change its letter assignment because in Disk Management it doesn't give me that option! I can change my external's drive letter easily I just need F: to be available again.
When I was trying to make my XP SP3 look like Vista, I changed something for the font. I used Movefile and a script. When the computer restarted, the font had changed, but is far too big and looks terrible. I didn't save a system restore point and I have tried changing the font size in 'Display Settings', then 'Appearance'. And I have tried changing the DPI setting and the 'Display Settings', 'Settings', then 'Advanced'.
Upon leaving my last company I was given one of the older laptops (too old for anyone to care to use anymore), an IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad. The laptop was purchased with OEM licenses for Windows XP and Office. I have not reinstalled XP on this PC, and although I no longer can connect to my old company's domain, I have been continuing to use the PC by logging on to the domain, as I am not able to log onto the PC in any other way. This is, by the way, annoying for me, because I can access the internet but cannot access my other computers at home since they are not on the "company" domain and so I do not have permission to do so.Now the problem: This laptop is beginning to have some sort of problem, where applications like Firefox just suddenly freeze up and cannot be terminated, not even using Task Manager. I need to hardboot the machine each time as I cannot even shutdown in a normal fashion.
So how is the best way to a) fix this problem and b) get permission to log on to the machine "locally" and not on the company domain? One thing I am thinking about is just re-installing the computer, and I have the Windows XP license info on the label on the bottom of the laptop, and I suppose I can get the office license key using something like ProduKey. It would be nice to avoid having to do this, however, as I do not have the Lenovo CD's and would have to reinstall everything from the net. Any advice on what is best to do? How to find/fix the freezes of software like Yahoo and Firefox? How to get away from the company domain? I as user have admin priviledges to the PC but cannot, for example, touch the antivirus software and that is irritating.
I'm fixing a computer for someone at work. He had an Emachines computer where the ps failed and took the mobo with it.Hard drive is intact and i'm hoping to still use his license of windows and just update it or something. Is this possible, or does he have to go and repurchase windows now? Also, he's upgrading to a core duo processor and mobo, and on the back of the mobo box it says, "Intel EM64T requires a computer system with a processor, chipset, BIOS, OS, device drivers and applications enabled for Intel EM64T. Processor will not operate (including 32-bit operations) without an Intel EM64T-enabled BIOS."Does this mean he needs the 64 bit version of windows now as well, or is regular xp home fine? Is this true for all 64 bit processors?
I have two IDE hard disks one 40GB=C and the secondary 200GB=D,I have made a copy of documents and setting from C to a new folder backup in drive D.After that this operating finished I preformed format of C and installed from on drive C the MS WIN XP operating system. After the installation the backup FOLDER on drive D, changed to backup FILE without extension. How can I restore my DATA? anyone familiar with this phenomenon
There seem to be 2 places in IE to change font size, Tools | Internet Options; Fonts to select the web & plain text fonts and Accessibility to select or ignore font styles & sizes. I simply cannot find the right combination to be able to have consistent fonts on all pages. If I check "ignore font size" then the pages use my font but the font seems to vary from web page to web page. I have to click the "size" button on the toolbar. With this unchecked some web pages have really BIG fonts and some have such small fonts that I cannot read them and have to select the "ignore font size" again.
I would just like to know if I can fix the problem so then I can see my pictures. What can I do to fix the corrupted files? Can I retrieve my pictures back and if so How?
