Need To Backup Registry, Can't Boot Into Windows - Possible From Linux?

My main computer's installation of windows (XP Home Edition OEM SP2) is completely dead. Due to a driver problem (to do with having alcohol 120% and daemon tools installed) it resolutely refuses to boot up, even in safe mode. I've tried everything to fix it, including several repair installatios of windows and much rummaging around with the recovery console, but it's gone, I need to reinstall.
Windows is installed on it's own partition, so I don't mind terribly having to reinstall, but one thing I'm annoyed about is having to reinstall all my programs (that are on their own partition too) when I lose the registry.

I installed XP-Home edition on a computer and did a file search for any file for Scan Registery and ScanDisk, but did not find any such file For Win 98/SE, the O/S at the start of computer, backs up the Registery - by defalut 5 back-ups, 1 for each day, but can be increased up to 99. If the Registery get's corrupted (or you want to remove all traces of a just installed and uninstalled program, you can shut down the unit, re-boot with F8 to Command Prompt and run: ScanReg (DOS Mode) and restore the 4 files: System.dat, User.dat, System.ini and User.ini Is there a similar functionality available in XP - Home Edition? Is there such file Win XP version?

I have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) booting Suse and XP and boot up through Suse's built in boot manager which gives me the option of booting to Windows or Linux. But since I barely ever use Linux I want to delete it off the 2nd drive so I can use it for a storage drive, so I'm wondering how to replace the Windows Master Boot Record so I can just boot into my XP drive. I'm scared that once I delete/reformat the contents of the 2nd hard drive (I'll probably use Partition Magic to do this through my XP drive) that I won't be able to boot XP up anymore. So before I do anything I want to just be able to boot into XP and bypass the linux drive before I delete it to make sure everything is ok.

The Windows XP Pro SP2 CD (it's legit, I bought it from Microsoft) will not boot from when I start it up. I've already went into my BIOS settings and changed the Boot Order so it will try to boot from the CD-ROM first. What happens is that I get the "Press any key to boot from CD....." message. After I press a key, I get the "Setup will now inspect your computer hardware and configuration..." message and then the screen goes blank and stays blank. The blue Windows Setup screen never comes up. I've tried the same CD on another PC (it had XP Pro SP2 on it, not Linux) and it boots up fine so it must be my computer. Also, I tried booting a Windows 95 CD and I got a "BOOT DISK FAILURE" message. I do know that my computer can boot from a CD because my Linux CDs (Ubuntu, Fedora, and Mint) boot with no problems at all.

When I did a clean install of XP, I saved the backed up the registry.
Can I import this backup to clean out all registry entries since the
install?
Or can I do a comparison between the backup and the current registry to look
at differences and delete them manually?

When scheduling a backup using the Windows Backup Wizard, I put in all the scheduling info, but Windows backup never launches. When I look at a scheduled event and click "properties" I get an error message that says "General page initialization failed, etc, etc. (error# 0X80090016)

Windows XP will not boot. After the first "Dell" screen, a blinking underscore appears on a blank page. The hard drive and all hardware are fine, as confirmed by friend computer wizards. This is without doubt a software problem.
I burned SLAX (a linux derivative) to a live CD and set my BIOS to boot from CD. SLAX is fantastic, but I wonder if I can restore windows to a previous point or investigate my boot sequence using SLAX's file manager There is a high likelihood that I have a trojan.
Side question: Would you recommend trend micro antivirus over norton? is there another antivirus option you'd recommend more highly than both of these?

I was running a dual boot of windows XP and Ubuntu Linux prior to installing Vista beta 2. Now, after upgrading windows XP to vista beta 2 i no longer have the boot screen that allows me to chose between my linux boot and my vista. Any way i can get back into linux? I did not make a boot disc for linux.

First I'll describe what I intended to do, followed by me explaining my problems, and ended with my actual question.Intentions:Fixing my Master boot record file with a FIXMBR and removing my Ubuntu installation due to lack of usage, amongst things.
Merging the old Linux partitions space with one of my current NTFS partitions for the extra space (all above-mentioned partitions are on the same HDD, for the record). Would've done this with Partition Magic.

Move the Documents and Settings folder to a different drive (sicn the guy who fixed my computer didn't do RAID and so I now have three partitions, of which everything is installed in one).
So... I backed up my registry by doing Export. I want to know how I can fix the registry from this if something goes wrong. I need to be prepared before the computer breaks.

I have a backup.reg file (C:Documents and Settingsmy nameMy Documents eg backup.reg) that is 82MB that still has fragments after being defragged. I would like to simply delete this file since it's been a few months since I made the backup, and I'm not experiencing any problems with my registry. Is it safe to delete this backup?

My operating system is WinXP Pro SP3 (build 2600) fully updated, 1 GB upper memory, 2.4 Intel Celeron Processor, Motherboard ECS P4M800PRO-M478 1.0, two CD/DVD drives (LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-411S and SONY DVD RW DRU-190A ), and an external Maxtor hard drive backup.
For the last 2 months, when I backup the registry or the hard drive and reboot, the PC performs poorly - i,e,
A light on the front of the PC begins an unending cyclic blinking. Playing a video on the internet results in interrupts in the video and sound synchronized with the blinking. The Solitaire card game has interrupts when cards are dealt. Typing is sticky in MsWord 2007 The blinking and sticky PC performance can be ended by reinstalling the backed up registry and rebooting.

CCleaner was featured last April 18, 2006 on CNET's Download Dispatch Windows edition with a subject ''Mr. Sparkle'', and because of it I had downloaded the software and had my PC Cleaned. I had also read CNET's how to use CCleaner and even had followed it while I was cleaning my PC.
One problem though I had observed on that how to is that though it advise you to have the registry backed up so that just in case something goes wrong, you would be able to restore the registry back, it lacks the procedure on how to restore it. After cleaning my PC, noting happens though and I am glad my PC is still running fine with a cleaner environment. But let say if I find something wrong later, how will I able to restore the registry from the backup? Anybody here who knows how? It seems also that I did not find this option inside CCleaner.

I know that just exporting and importing the Registry does not put the Registry back to as it was before any new entries were made.
I've been told that doing a System Restore does not wipe out all new entries either.
I was told that the only way to put a Registry back as it was before new entries,is to do a System State backup using the Microsoft Backup utility.
Is the correct, and if not what method puts a Registry back, wiping out any and all new entries, the way it was

Win 98 / SE has a ScanReg.exe application, which on start-up picks up the 2 Registery files (System.Dat, User.Dat) plus 2 ini files (System.ini and Win.in) and compresses trhem as *.cab file - RBxxx.cab. The files are stored at WindowsSysBckUp folder. In case of improper shut-down or some just installed program cause problem, one can boot with F8 to command propmt and RESTORE the registery. Is there a similar functionality in Win XP - Professional or if not, any 3rd party software developer has created a software for that. Restore from Windows mode generally does not work and in case the registery is totally messed up, one does not have the running system, so the question of restoring the system, using SYSTEM RESTORE application does not arise.

I use acronis as a restore tool and have never had a problem restoring the entire operating system. I had this individual program that was corrupted and I reinstalled it from the image I made using acronis. However, the program failed to appear in the add/remove section of windows. I beleive that I have to manually reinstall the registry entry of the program in order for it to appear in the add/remove section. My question is: is there a registry backup utility that'll let me reinstall individual entries? Something that's a no-brainer also as I'm not completely comfortable fooling around with the registry.

I think i did something really wrong... i had a registry backup on my desktop and i wanted to move it to another area on my computer. I clicked on it and it said : are you sure you want to add the information in C: blah blah registry backup.reg to the registry? I dont know what i was thinking but i clicked on yes. And now i have several problems.... too many to mention but here's a few: anything windows site or microsoft site related cant get in.

I'm trying to dual boot 2 different installs of xp pro from 2 drives using the Windows boot loader. I've edited the boot.ini every possible way I can think of, but nothing works. I've done this plenty of times using a linux boot loader or dual booting from a single drive but I cant figure this out. I haven't been able to find any reference to this subject anywhere, but I think it would work. Anybody have a clue as to how to do this? I know I can use a different boot manager to accomplish this, I just wanted to make the Win boot.ini work. Or, does anybody know of a good boot manager if I cant make this work?

i was trying to restore my backup of the partition with the windows xp system on it. Of course, everything went wrong and Norton Ghost 2003 had an error at about 95%. I thought i can just boot from the win xp cd and fix the problem... no way when i try to boot from the win xp cd, i get a black screen after checking my pc configuration, no driver loading etc.
when i try to boot from my sata drive, it says that there are some missing files (that's not strange, if ghost didnt work like it should) when i try to boot from any other drive i get an error like this: A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your Computer. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer.If this screen appears again, follow thease steps: Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. On my box at home, I have Norton System Works, which contains a registry diagnostic/sweeper.At work, where I run Windows 2000 Pro, I was wondering...I know there are various registry diagnostic & cleaner utilities out there on the web, but I thought I had heard that Windows itself either includes one on the OS disc or makes one available for download.Is there such a thing as an official Windows Registry utility?

After restoring a computer and backing up files, once the computer is back up and running should I have a foldercalled "My Backup 1408-08 2353" or should I have a single backup file called backup.bkf? I'm trying to help someone, and they have a folder with the files already available instead of a single backup.bkf file. He wants to restore everything to the original location before the computer restore. How can he do that with the folder he has instead of a backup.bkf file? The restore wizard is asking for a .bkf file to place everything in the original locations, and he doesn't have that.

I use the tool of regmon to moniter the activity of appliction access the registry. In the screen, i can see the request of 'query value' or 'open key' or'close key'. the response shows 'success','not found'. I can not understand why the applications need these request when they are running.
