Windows updated and my computer restarted itself this morning and since then everytime i try to use a programmes such as internet explorer, a game or google earth I get a message of: "The application or DLL C:WINDOWSsystem32urlmon.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check your installation diskette" in a box with a red cross in it in the centre of the screen. And from a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it from the toolbar at the bottom a bubble saying "the file or directory WINDOWSSystem32URLMON.DLL is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utilty"
I have Windows xp pro on an IBM Think Center. I can receive, download and print a large file using Outlook Express. If I then try to forward this file, either the recipient gets it but is unable to open it or it is scrambled and unreadible... OR... the recipient never recieves it and then I receive 2 or 3 emails (depending on the size of the file) stating FROM: "mail delivery system" and SUBJECT: "delivery status notification". I AM able to upload or forward small files of say 2 or 3 pages without a problem. I've tried to find some setting that I could change but have be unsuccessful.
File or Directory C:$MFT is corrupt or unreadable. Run CHKDSK /f.Got this message on a WinXP Home SP2 box. I can't run chkdsk /f because I'm using the disk (obviously) When I reboot however, the system does it's own chkdsk but doesn't find any errors. The message keeps coming back. I don't get any hits when I search the KB.

Cannot Delete Projects: The File Or Directory Is Corrupt Or Unreadable Keep getting this message when i try to delete a folder on my computer and whatever i do it wont delete
Running Windows XP home, well-protected from viruses and spyware with all the usual recommended programs. I have a 160G external firewire hard drive, NTFS system. Cannot access data all of a sudden, I am getting an error message, "file system corrupt and unreadable." In disk management, the drive is listed as healthy, 160G, but no NTFS listed. What could have caused this, and is there a way to retrieve the data? Are there any low-cost or freeware programs to do this, or is it inevitable to spend a "fortune?"
i have a folder on my desktop that is not empty but when i try to open it (via GUI or command line) it will not. i get "the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" and it wants me to run check disk. when i do, i then get an application error on boot up. so i boot in safe mode with command line and disable check disk on boot up so i can get back into windows with no problem however the folder is still there and unable to open and/or delete. fsutil tells me that the c drive is dirty, but i just can't clean it.how can i delete "C:Documents and SettingsusernameDesktopNew Folder"?
I have a usb external enclosure which holds a 120 gig hard drive that I use for storage. I shut it off when I am done to save power, and just the other day I notice a file on it that is quite large isn't allowing me to open it any longer. It keeps saying that the 'file or folder is corrupt and unreadable'...Weird. I was just looking at the folder yesterday. Is there absolutely anything I can do to get that data back?? All the other files on that hard drive are fine. Why did it target out that file?
I have a Pentium 4, Windows XP Home Edition and this problem is driving me mad. My pc says dskchkr.exe - application error. When I try to run diskchecker it says "it is unable to run in autofix mode because volume c: is in use by another application" and asks if i want to schedule it to run on startup. It will not run on startup. I also have had this message onscreen "The file or directory c:WINDOWSPrefetchMCUIMGR.exe-0E667E1B.pf is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility. !!! I have taken Macafee off my pc (or I HOPE so), and now I have NO diskchecker on AT ALL. I think I have some programs on which I thought I had removed but I cant get rid of them all without paying. Im losing my mind !!!!
At startup Windows XP always suggested to run disk check and after I let it the whole partirion(most of it) is unreadable. The files are there but they are simply unreadable. For instance, I cannot open pictures or open MP3s. Like the content of the files has been messes up

When I start up my laptop, the screen immediatly says Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windowssystem32configsystem You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. The deal is I dont have the cd. IF someone could tell me how to get an xp cd (without buying) that'd be great.

Running a Windows 2000 machine. Machine came with W2k installed 2 years ago. Have all other windows updates installed. Getting this error when trying to install Service Pack 4 - The file c:windowssystem32ftp.exe is open or in use by another application. The taskmanager does not show any FTP specifically running. So I downloaded SP4 to my hard drive so I wouldn't have to get on the internet, and rebooted in safe mode. Then ran SP4 update from my hard drive but I still got the same FTP error. How do I find this FTP process and stop it?

I can't open my registry. It just started happening. When I go the the stat/run and enter regedit all that opens briefly is a DOS window and then closing within second.
Suddenly my documents folder opens when I log on to my machine. I checked all Startup folders for a shortcut to My Documents but found none. I followed the instructions on kb899865 but everything was as it should have been. I then checked for the trojan spyware.dlder with MalwareBytes Anti Malware and found nothing. Spyware Blaster also found nothing. About the same time I found I was unable to open help and support, when I tried to correct that I continue to get the message that pchdt_w3.cab can not be found. It is not on C or the Windows install disk or SP2 disk. I am really stuck. While it is possible to close the folder after booting it is a pain and I would like to get things operating as they should be. I am running XP Pro. w/sp2.

I have bypassed it and gone straight from the modem still doesn't work. I have hooked someone elses laptop up to modem and guess what??? They opened them just fine. So I'm back to me. I'm so frustrated and confused. Please any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.
After using Dr.Web Cleant it to clean up my xp laptop, it got worst. The laptop loads up but all that i see is the desktop background. No Start bar, not programs on desktop, shortcuts don't work .e. "windows"+R, "windows"+E) ONLY TASK MANAGER OPENS with CRTL+ALT+DEL.
My Compaq Presario 7470 was on its last legs (error messages, blue Fatal Expressions, cutting out and starting over) when I retrieved as many files as I could on compressed cds (Ce Quadrat Packet) before Windows Explorer stopped letting me access. I now have an eMachines T6410 with Windows XP and I can't open these files to read them nor copy them to my present system. eMachines suggests connecting the old pc to this via cable and accessing in that manner, but, I did a Restore on the old one before the monitor went completely blank so there's nothing to access. Surely there must be somebody out there who has had a similar situation, transferring backups that were created in Windows 98SE and compressed and now need to be accessed and copied on Windows XP! PLEASE HELP! (My 5-year collection of music is on these cds!)
I was on my computer when I was done I decided to actually turn it off which I never do I always leave it running. My computer was working completely fine I ran virus scans all that shizz, the next day I turn it on and it says:Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt windowssystem 32configsystem You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-Rom. As stated one of our customers has some windows based software (Sage Line 100 and Telemagic to be precise) which is run from a shortcut on the desktop mapped to a network share with the exe located within. whenever you run either of these shortcuts or even if you navigate directly to the file you get the error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" the users in question have full local rights and full control over the files on the server inc the exe. As they are part of the USERs group which have full control. The Administrator has no problem in getting this file to run
