Sep 3, 2009Hi, I am having a weird problem. I cannot change what programs I use by defualt to open windows files. It does not matter whether I right click on a certain file and choose open with or if I use the tools option in the folder menu. This is what happens. I want to open a .jpg file with picassa photo viewer. I right click the .jpg file and choose open with. I then click browse to locate the .exe file that will open it. Well once I click it I get sent back to the open with window and nothing has changed. The .jpg file will not open with any program that can open it and it will not add the .exe file into the window. This is a bit frustrating as I cannot change what opens certain windows files by default. This goes for any type of file I try to open with any program.

Apr 28, 2007I have a Windows XP Home installation and the main account is set as an administrator account.when we log into this account the command prompt window is displayed, but not with a c prompt and there is nothing we can do to exit it (i.e unable to type exit)
On looking at the startup options in msconfig, which is what's causing the command prompt window to open:
Startup Item: svchost
Command: C:windowssystem32driverssvchost.exe
Location: HKCUSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrenVersionRun
So using the account that is in the administrators group I tried to deselect it but when clicking Ok or Apply I get this message:
Error: An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change the service. You man need to log on using and Administrator account the make the specified changes.
But I am using an Admin account...!?!?
So I tried rebooting into safe mode, then as the 'Official' Admin account to change it but when I login as the Administrator the svchost isn't in the start up options?
There are a couple of other accounts that are just standard accounts and they don't have the svchost on their startup.

Sep 1, 2005I'm able to run MSCONFIG just fine as administrator,but I can't run it as limited user.The message is "An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator account".But I'm pretty sure I've previously run MSCONFIG as limited user. Is my memory wrong, or is something wrong?

When I connect using remote desktop, I usually connect as the user (Not Administrator), but lately the command prompt has stopped working on this account. When I type cmd in the run-window, command prompt opens, and about 1/2 sec later, it's closed. If I connect as the Administrator, this problems doesn't exist.I have scanned for viruses, using both my installed Norton Internet Security package, and also using Symantec's online virus-scan. No virus found.

I am running windows XP home edition on an HP Dv2000 notebook, and have tried almost everything. Repair console wont work as is says it cannot find hard drive, and yet when I go into Bios it says it is there (Notebook HDD) (a SATA btw) . Running a check on the hard drive yeilds nothing but a fit bill of health. I cannot access command prompt, or any safe mode. Running a HP recovery install is also fixing nothing. I am stuck with a laptop that just keeps cycling around in circles, constantly rebooting itself.

Nov 21, 2009I would like to know if this can be done in win xp environment. say I have a folder, A, of pictures only and they all have file extensions jpg eg abc.jpg, xyz.jpg. say I have a second folder, B, which contains all the files of A(if you ignore extensions) and more(but all are pictures.) But all the files in B has extensions NEF instead of jpg eg abc.NEF, efg.NEF, xyz.NEF. My idea is to extract all the files from B that has the same the name as A(ignoring extensions) and either move or copy to a separate folder ie if A contains abc.jpg, xyz.jpg then abc.NEF and xyz.NEF will be extracted and moved/copied to a new folder. I'm not sure where to start. is there a program out there that can do this? or there's a special command to type at the command prompt?

Getting this error when trying to install Service Pack 4 - The file c:windowssystem32ftp.exe is open or in use by another application. The taskmanager does not show any FTP specifically running. So I downloaded SP4 to my hard drive so I wouldn't have to get on the internet, and rebooted in safe mode. Then ran SP4 update from my hard drive but I still got the same FTP error.
