Hi, I am having a weird problem. I cannot change what programs I use by defualt to open windows files. It does not matter whether I right click on a certain file and choose open with or if I use the tools option in the folder menu. This is what happens. I want to open a .jpg file with picassa photo viewer. I right click the .jpg file and choose open with. I then click browse to locate the .exe file that will open it. Well once I click it I get sent back to the open with window and nothing has changed. The .jpg file will not open with any program that can open it and it will not add the .exe file into the window. This is a bit frustrating as I cannot change what opens certain windows files by default. This goes for any type of file I try to open with any program.View 5 Replies View Related

I used to be able to run MSCONFIG and now I can't. I've tried the Start/Run thing several times. I've downloaded an XP version, and copied it to the WindowsSystem folder and tried it from there too, but I can't even get that to run.View 17 Replies View Related
I have a Windows XP Home installation and the main account is set as an administrator account.when we log into this account the command prompt window is displayed, but not with a c prompt and there is nothing we can do to exit it (i.e unable to type exit)
On looking at the startup options in msconfig, which is what's causing the command prompt window to open:
Startup Item: svchost
So using the account that is in the administrators group I tried to deselect it but when clicking Ok or Apply I get this message:
Error: An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change the service. You man need to log on using and Administrator account the make the specified changes.
But I am using an Admin account...!?!?
So I tried rebooting into safe mode, then as the 'Official' Admin account to change it but when I login as the Administrator the svchost isn't in the start up options?
There are a couple of other accounts that are just standard accounts and they don't have the svchost on their startup.
I'm able to run MSCONFIG just fine as administrator, but I can't run it as limited user. The message is "An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator account".But I'm pretty sure I've previously run MSCONFIG as limited user. Is my memory wrong, or is something wrong?View 4 Replies View Related

I have a server at my home network, running windows XP Pro SP2, and it is configured with 2 users. One Administrator and one user. When I connect using remote desktop, I usually connect as the user (Not Administrator), but lately the command prompt has stopped working on this account. When I type cmd in the run-window, command prompt opens, and about 1/2 sec later, it's closed. If I connect as the Administrator, this problems doesn't exist.I have scanned for viruses, using both my installed Norton Internet Security package, and also using Symantec's online virus-scan. No virus found.View 9 Replies View Related

I must have screwed something up.some but not all of my folders open a command prompt window. I managed to change them to an explorer window instead, but in file type, I can figure out how to get "open" back as the default when I click on these folders. The right click menu either has expand greyed out, or doesn't have it at all. Open is the third item, and find first (now) with command window second. How do I reset these? And, any idea what would have messed them up? I did start sharing with my son's computer and I downloaded firefox 1.0.3.View 3 Replies View Related

I am one of the many who had succumbed to this problem: C:WINDOWSsystem32configSYSTEM missing or corrupt. I am running windows XP home edition on an HP Dv2000 notebook, and have tried almost everything. Repair console wont work as is says it cannot find hard drive, and yet when I go into Bios it says it is there (Notebook HDD) (a SATA btw) . Running a check on the hard drive yeilds nothing but a fit bill of health. I cannot access command prompt, or any safe mode. Running a HP recovery install is also fixing nothing. I am stuck with a laptop that just keeps cycling around in circles, constantly rebooting itself.View 14 Replies View Related
I would like to know if this can be done in win xp environment. say I have a folder, A, of pictures only and they all have file extensions jpg eg abc.jpg, xyz.jpg. say I have a second folder, B, which contains all the files of A(if you ignore extensions) and more(but all are pictures.) But all the files in B has extensions NEF instead of jpg eg abc.NEF, efg.NEF, xyz.NEF. My idea is to extract all the files from B that has the same the name as A(ignoring extensions) and either move or copy to a separate folder ie if A contains abc.jpg, xyz.jpg then abc.NEF and xyz.NEF will be extracted and moved/copied to a new folder. I'm not sure where to start. is there a program out there that can do this? or there's a special command to type at the command prompt?View 3 Replies View Related

Previously I have been doing work that requires me to unplug my network connection and I need to check my IP address each time I plug it in again. I guess it's not set for static IP.Anyways to do this I usually go into Command Prompt and type 'ipconfig'Now however I just get "'ipconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file".The directory is the same as its always been, I can change it but it doesn't seem to matter what it is.I've checked many other posts and is there something possibly wrong with my PATH variable? I used the command 'echo %PATH%' and it works, the list it gives is very garbled however.View 13 Replies View Related
I can't access the "Run" command from the start menu. When I click on it windows bring up a message box saying "Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?" Even if I click yes, the shortcut doesn't do anything. I can still access the run command by hitting the windows button + r. But it is annoying not having that function when needed... No virii or spyware involved. I believe it's a registry issue, but I've no idea were to correct the issue and I can't find any info on the net[which is a first].View 2 Replies View Related

I followed the instructions on kb899865 but everything was as it should have been. I then checked for the trojan spyware.dlder with MalwareBytes Anti Malware and found nothing. Spyware Blaster also found nothing. About the same time I found I was unable to open help and support, when I tried to correct that I continue to get the message that pchdt_w3.cab can not be found. As stated one of our customers has some windows based software (Sage Line 100 and Telemagic to be precise) which is run from a shortcut on the desktop mapped to a network share with the exe located within. whenever you run either of these shortcuts or even if you navigate directly to the file you get the error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" the users in question have full local rights and full control over the files on the server inc the exe. As they are part of the USERs group which have full control. The Administrator has no problem in getting this file to runView 5 Replies View Related

My problem started when I read an article on the web that Microsoft uses a "/prefetch:1" command to load Windows Media Player faster than normal. This is usually added to the shortcuts found on your taskbar and desktop. I thought this is a great idea. I should have this "/prefetch:1" command on all my important shortcuts.
I logged into my limited account and I tested it on the programs I used the most and in fact it worked wonderful, that is until I used it on a particular program called 2xExplorer. This program is like Windows Explorer on steroids. I've used this great program for a couple of years now and never had a problem. I added the "/prefetch:1" command to my 2xExplorer shortcut and when I launched the program it worked fine.
I Hope someone has seen this I am being told that I am no longer the administrator of my computer, and can not change the internet options. I have Win XP Home SP2, IE 6.0.2900.2180 BTW, I am the only user and I have complete admin rights.View 6 Replies View Related

3 months ago I installed Service Pak2. Prior to the installation Windows Media Player9 had been running flawlessly on my system. After Installation, however I have been totally unable to get Windows Media Player to open. I downloaded Version 10 of Windows Media Player and installed it but again I was unable to get it to open. I cleared all traces of WMP from registry and turned off system restore and then re installed WMP10. Still would not open and the system will not permit me to use version 9 anymore.View 8 Replies View Related
I am unable to open links and attached windows when I need to move to another part of a page or window. When I click on a section or link to open, the window pop ups but it is blank and there is no activity on the window to show that it is attempting to open; and it just sits there. Somtimes, the STOP and REFRESH button shows up on the top of the page and I can click "STOP", then "REFRESH" and this allows the page to open but alot of times these features are not available and I just have to close the window and am unable to gain access to the information or page I am attempting to see.
I have enabled cookies, I do not have a pop-up blocker activated and no firewall so I cannot understand why certain windows open and certain ones won't. This problem occurs at random, there is no particular site or anything when this happens.
