Config System Missing / Unable To Go To Command Prompt?
Jan 23, 2009
I am one of the many who had succumbed to this problem: C:WINDOWSsystem32configSYSTEM missing or corrupt. I am running windows XP home edition on an HP Dv2000 notebook, and have tried almost everything. Repair console wont work as is says it cannot find hard drive, and yet when I go into Bios it says it is there (Notebook HDD) (a SATA btw) . Running a check on the hard drive yeilds nothing but a fit bill of health. I cannot access command prompt, or any safe mode. Running a HP recovery install is also fixing nothing. I am stuck with a laptop that just keeps cycling around in circles, constantly rebooting itself.

I think i may have just made a big mistake, whilst messing around with command promt and researching on websites i wanted a program to run when my comuter started, a website stated to add it to the autoexec.bat file as a 'call' program or in config.sys, so in cmd i entered edit autoexec.bat and a blank edit screen appeared, i did the same with config.sys and another blank screen appeared. It said beneath to open sysedit from start>run, i did and the autoexec.bat file was empty and so was the config.sys file, is this serious or am i jusy being

When I start up my laptop, the screen immediatly says Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windowssystem32configsystem
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. The deal is I dont have the cd. IF someone could tell me how to get an xp cd (without buying) that'd be great.

I would like to know if this can be done in win xp environment. say I have a folder, A, of pictures only and they all have file extensions jpg eg abc.jpg, xyz.jpg. say I have a second folder, B, which contains all the files of A(if you ignore extensions) and more(but all are pictures.) But all the files in B has extensions NEF instead of jpg eg abc.NEF, efg.NEF, xyz.NEF. My idea is to extract all the files from B that has the same the name as A(ignoring extensions) and either move or copy to a separate folder ie if A contains abc.jpg, xyz.jpg then abc.NEF and xyz.NEF will be extracted and moved/copied to a new folder. I'm not sure where to start. is there a program out there that can do this? or there's a special command to type at the command prompt?

Previously I have been doing work that requires me to unplug my network connection and I need to check my IP address each time I plug it in again. I guess it's not set for static IP.Anyways to do this I usually go into Command Prompt and type 'ipconfig'Now however I just get "'ipconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file".The directory is the same as its always been, I can change it but it doesn't seem to matter what it is.I've checked many other posts and is there something possibly wrong with my PATH variable? I used the command 'echo %PATH%' and it works, the list it gives is very garbled however.

The system can be restored by using the Startup CD and pressing R for recover, but I do not have any cd. The only one I have it the recover cd, but it is my understanding that if I use the recovery cd that I will erase everything from my computer and I can not do this.I tried to read the other threads about the same problem, but to be honest I do not understand them and I just do not have the startup cd - maybe it is the same as the recovery cd?

I'm running a Dell XPS 600 with Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition. Well, OK, it's not really running.I used System Restore to return my PC to a point about six weeks ago when the system was more stable. The PC rebooted, and now it won't boot any more due to a missing/corrupt CONFIGSYSTEM file.It won't boot from either of my CD drives, either. I've used the boot Setup to alter the boot sequence but that doesn't help, the system just doesnt recognize those drives during boot. For this same reason, I've been unable to access the Recovery Console.

So I was working with adobe photoshop and it absolutely refused to exit. I tried ctrl+alt+delete and after about twenty minutes it was still frozen on my screen. So I tried shutting the computer down normally, and it froze on the "Windows is shutting down" screen for like, the fiftieth time. So I had to force it off by holding down the power button. When I turned it back on to continue working, I got a message saying windows/system32/config (or something like that) was missing or corrupt. I pressed "r" since I don't know where my startup disk is and it restarted.
I have Norton GoBack, so I hit the space-bar to allow it to restore to about an hour earlier before I opened photoshop. This wasn't the first time this had happened. I've been getting the same message at every other start up for a couple weeks and this method worked fine every time. It seemed to be okay this time too but then it just RESTARTED for no apparent reason. When it got to the Norton GoBack screen I got a message saying the system had become unstable and needed to start over, and it suggested it was possibly because of a bug in an application or a hardware problem which is also possible.

My problem started when I booted my computer. Windows (XP Home Edition) started with the message that windows/system32/config/system.sav was missing or corrupt. It told me to use the recovery console to solve the problem. I saw with the recovery console that the system.sav file wasn't missing so it had to be corrupt (0 bytes in filesize).

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: /windows/system32/config/system
It states that I can put in the originial setup CD-ROM and select 'r' to start repair but that doesn't help me. My laptop did not come with a windows cd as I bought it preloaded from BestBuy. So about 4 years ago when my computer was overcome with the Sasser worm, I reformatted and loaded a friend of mine's Win XP Pro cd on my laptop. I still have the CD but when I hit 'r' (Boot partition recovery) it does its little DOS thing and then gives me a Disk I/O Error. I am thinking that maybe it is trying to boot from a floppy drive and not my CD drive and thats why I am getting the I/O error?
